I think this is being devloped by ESMValTool, could you confirm what reference datasets are being used for this diagnostic? I think one of these is OSISAF/CCI, but not sure if any other are being used.

Yes, that's right. The ESMValTool issue is ESMValGroup/ESMValTool#3962. No observational requirement, with justification in ESMValGroup/ESMValTool#3962 (comment).

@alistairsellar Can I just confirm this means you don't use OSISAF/CCI data for this diagnostic either? Where do the uncertainty ranges originate from? Maybe you meant you do not require any observational dataset to be available through, but you have some statistics/values/uncertainties internal to the recipe which are based on observations? (This would be a similar approach to the ESMValTool Fire diagnostic where a static csv file of weights has been generated from a range of observations, but it does not get updated if new observavtions become available) Could you specify what those datasets are? It would still be important for us to record datasets used statically/internally, even if we do not need to publish them on ESGF.
