Adopt a permissive license (MIT/Apache 2.0) instead of GPL-3.0 #234

Description

@sfloess

Problem: The project is licensed under GPL-3.0, which significantly hinders adoption, especially for commercial or library use cases. Most Java developers prefer permissive licenses like MIT or Apache 2.0 for dependencies.

Recommendation: Switch to MIT or Apache 2.0. This would make the library far more attractive to the community.
