+The term wallet is a bit of a misnomer and therefore can be confusing. Yes it's true that a bitcoin wallet, like a physical wallet, stores value, but the main difference is that bitcoin wallets don't actually store any bitcoin. Bitcoin only exists as a ledger entry on the public blockchain, or within the metaphorical vaults in cyberspace. Bitcoin wallets only store private keys, so a better name for them would actually be keychains. The private keys are what is used to sign transactions and spend bitcoin. When you sign a transaction with your wallet, you show proof that you own the money and have the right to spend those coins.
