Problem

You need to find specific government data.

But you do not know where to start looking. You are not sure about what terms to use, or who produces or manages the data, in fact you are not entirely sure that the data exist.

How and where do you get started?

Solution: Part I

Search reginfo.gov, the website that has a complete list of all the data collected by the government from the public (individuals and companies). Then search with the right terms in google including the agency name (collecting the information).

Forms

Find all approved forms that HHS uses to collect info from the public (individuals and companies).

<details>
Background information

Congress passed two laws, the Paperwork Reduction Acts of 1980 and 1995 (PL 96-511 and PL 104-13), creating and giving authority to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) within the Executive Offices of the President (EOP). The purpose of the Paperwork Reduction Act is to ensure that federal agencies do not overburden the public with federally sponsored data collections. OIRA must review and approve information collections that meet the following criteria: (1) federally sponsored (2) standardized data collections from (3) 10 or more respondents (4) within a 12 month period.

Once approved, the form displays an approval OMB Control Number. All information collection requests are posted online with supporting documentation and often the form itself on reginfo.gov.

For example, FDA OMB approved forms are listed here with OMB Control Numbers (i.e., ID), user-generated tags, and abstracts. Refer back to reginfo.gov for more info using the OMB Control Number.

On reginfo.gov, go to the Information Collection Review (ICR) > Search page here

Select Agency: Department of Health and Human Services

Select Sub-Agency: ___________

Select ICR Status: Active

Click: Search

Notes:

For HHS forms, it is necessary to select a "Sub-Agency" because reginfo allows at most 1,000 results.

"Sub-Agencies" do not necessarily correspond with HHS operating and staff divisions. Rather the options best correspond with budgeting allocations.

All the data on can be downloaded via XML. See here

So what?

Ever wondered what goes into an application to get a drug approved and marketed for sale in the United States? Find out! Make sure all the checkboxes are selected. See form. Or just download.

What is the legal basis for FDA's authority to approve drugs? Read "Authorizing Statute(s)" that are always cited here. For example: Authorizing Statute(s): US Code: 42 USC 262 Name of Law: PHS Act US Code: 21 USC 356b Name of Law: FFDCA

How many adverse event report responses are anticipated? Read the <a href="http://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/PRAViewDocument?ref_nbr=201207-0910-003>supporting statement">section 12 to find out how burden is calculated.
