#### Fix XSS in RSS feed

Another day, another patch. A bit depressing... but so is the life of a maintainer. This patch fixes a potential XSS vulnerability in the RSS feed. The issue was that the description of the photos was not properly escaped, allowing for potential XSS attacks if they contained malicious code.

This release brings a few fixes and minor improvements to the version 7.4.0. The most notable one is the fix of a potential crash when initializing the watermarker when some migrations are not run yet. We also added an error message to clarify the requirement of the ldap extension when enabling ldap support. Additionally, we added the possibility to pass individual file paths to the lychee:sync command, in addition to directories. This allows for more flexibility when syncing photos from the command line. We also added dynamic background modes with enum config, allowing for a more dynamic background on the landing page. Finally, we improved the message notification in the admin panel when a message is sent from the contact form.

#### Contact form, Raw support, and Quality of Life improvements

This release brings major new features across all editions! Supporter Edition users get a contact form allowing visitors to send messages directly from galleries (with full customization for Pro users), slugs as album IDs for prettier SEO-friendly URLs, mass rename functionality to apply renaming rules to photo/album selections, and watermark upload controls to choose between immediate or on-demand watermarking. Pro users gain the ability to let clients highlight photos without authentication—perfect for client galleries—plus revamped album headers with customizable positioning, colors, and focus point control for hero images.

For all users, this version introduces full RAW image support with automatic JPEG conversion while preserving originals, size-selectable zip downloads (small, medium, large, or original), and "remember me" login functionality for extended sessions. Additional improvements include a new photo list view, mass license editing, the ability to see which albums contain a photo, "starred" renamed to "highlight" for clarity, Lychee v3 album redirect fixes, and legacy code cleanup for improved performance.

#### Bulgarian language, fixes and improvements

This is a small patch which brings a few fixes and improvements. The most notable one is the addition of Bulgarian translations, thanks to our new contributor `@tkulev`. Additionally, `@cdzombak` added the possibility to filter embedded albums/streams by author using the data-author attribute.
We also propose two new smart albums: "My rated pictures" and "My best rated pictures". The first one contains all the photos that you have rated, while the second one contains the best rated photos by you. Those albums are only visible to you and are a great way to quickly access your favorite photos.

#### LDAP/AD support is here!

As usual, minor release, new functionalities! We add LDAP and Active Directory support for user authentication.
As this is more an enterprise feature, it is only available to Supporter Edition users. Aside from that,
we also added a new setting which allows to have the photo details drawer open by default when opening a photo.

#### Speed improvement and minor UI updates

This release brings a few new features. We added the ability to order photos by star rating and new smart albums based on ratings (1-5 stars, Best pictures).
Additionally, we also added the ability to move shared albums to a separate tab to reduce clutter.

One test instance database supports more than 3 million size variants and 400,000 photos in 4,000 albums. We noticed significant slowness when computing spaces, and somes actions such as deleting photos or albums where timing out completely, rendering them impossible to use. We refactored those parts of the code to improve the speed and avoid timeouts. This should greatly improve the experience of users with large galleries.

#### Hot fixes: Synology & menu issues

Small but important release to fix two important issues that were reported by our users. On Synology, the container kept rebooting due to write permission issues in dropped privilege mode. We fixed this by ensuring that the entrypoint script creates the necessary directories with the correct permissions. On the front-end the context menu was not appearing on the photos, this is also resolved.

### v7.1.0

#### Back to Debian, More caching and Pagination

This release brings a major change under the hood: We moved back from an Alpine-based docker image to a Debian-based one.
This should solve some speed issues with php and stability issues with the musl libc used in Alpine. Combined with the ability to drop privileges
for the php processes, this means that **you will likely need to double-check the access rights of your volumes to make sure that they remain 
readable and writable by the php processes.** We are aware that this change created issues for some Synology users, and we are investigating a fix.
In the meantime, you can use the environment variable `RUN_AS_ROOT=yes` to run the php processes as root again as a workaround.

Additionally, we added more precomputation mechanisms to improve the speed of Lychee. The thumbs are now pre-computed with the following characteristics:
If you select a photo as album cover, it will be visible to anyone. Otherwise, we pre-compute two thumbs covers: max privileges which is visible to admin and owner of the album, and min privileges which is visible to anyone. This is done by applying the previous logic that was used to select the thumb at runtime, but now pre-computed and stored in the database.

Finally, we added pagination to the albums and photos view. This should greatly improve the speed of Lychee when having a large number of albums/photos.
You can configure the number of items, the type of pagination (paginated, load more, infinite scroll), and the reactivity of the preloading in infinite scroll in your gallery settings.

#### Minor Reflected SSRF fix

We have been reported (CVE incoming) that a minor SSRF vulnerability was still present in Lychee.
The patch from v6.6.13 did not fully mitigate the issue because an edge case had not been considered.
Validation is done on the initial URL; however, if the URL is redirected, the redirection target was not validated against local network etc.
To fix this, we added a new _expert_ configuration option in the admin section which disables following redirects when importing from URL.


A big thanks to TableBasse, midfirewear, and petouha for reporting this vulnerability to us.

#### Embed support and checksum in diagnostics

This release brings one big new feature (hence the minor version bump), courtesy of @cdzombak: Javascript-based embed support.
This allows you to embed your albums in websites with a small piece of code.
You can access the functionality from each album views in the detail panel.

We also added a checksum check in the diagnostic page, allowing you to verify the integrity of your installation.
The checksum are computed as a merkle tree on all important the files in the code base. Obviously, those do not include your photos etc.
With this we hope to make it easier to verify that the version run by you is indeed the version you intended to run.

#### Signing process change and migration fixes

#### Import from server is back!

A small release which punch above its weight. The import from server feature is back in the Web UI.
This feature was available in Lychee v4, and removed in v5 as it was not working as intended.

Note that we strongly recommend you use job queues if you wish to import large number of photos.
The parsing of the folders _etc_ will be fast, but the actual processing will always take some time.
The execution of the command is no different than running `php artisan lychee:sync` from the command line.

#### Goodies for our Supporters: Watermarking, Zip upload, Renamer!

Version 6.9.0 is a major update in the sense that brings three brand new features for our Supporters:

- **Watermarking** - Lychee provides now the ability to add watermarks to your photos. This is a highly configurable functionality. Once you have chosen the photo, you can select the transparency, and change the size and position of the watermark to your own taste. It will then be applied to all new photos uploaded to your instance. You can also choose to apply it to existing photos at the click of a button.
- **Upload zip files** - You can now upload a zip file containing photos and Lychee will automatically extract the photos and add them to your selected album. This is another great way to upload a large number of photos at once. We recommend that you use queues to allow the processing of the photos to be done in the background.
- **Renamer** - This is a small utility which allows you to define some automated renaming rules. All subsequent uploads will have those applied. Those are also applied when doing a server-side sync. This is a great way to enforce a naming convention on your photos.

Just because you are not a Supporter, does not mean that you are left out. In addition to fixing a few bugs we also added a brand new page: Timeline. This page displays your photos in a chronological order, grouped by month and year. On the right side, you will find a small panel to access quickly a specific month and year.

#### Migration fix and Goodies

Update 6.8.0 came with a nasty small issue in one of the database migration. In the event your database is using a large amount of tags, the migration would fail due to duplicates conditions. We updated the migration file to handle this case and such that if you ended up in an incomplete database migration state, you could still get back up and running.

With this short notice, we also added a few small features that were nearly ready for version 6.8.0 but didn't make the cut.

#### Tags refactoring, pinned albums, and more!

This release marks a significant change in the way tags are handled in Lychee. Previously, tags were stored as a single comma-separated string in the database.
Tags are now stored in their own table and linked to photos via a many-to-many relationship. This change enables tag autocomplete,
and provides a more efficient way to manage your tags. We also added a page that lists all tags in your instance related to your user.
From this page, you can rename, merge, and delete tags. It also provides an overview of the number of photos related to each tag.

Additionally, @cdzombak has been working on a few new features. It is now possible to pin albums, highlighting them for your users. This functionality is not limited to the albums in the root directory, but also works for albums in subdirectories, giving you shortcuts to your most important albums.

#### Security release: Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability fix (3.5)

All versions of Lychee below 6.6.12 are vulnerable to a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability.
This leads the attacker to be able to execute any GET request on your local network.

#### The vulnerability

The attack makes use of an unsanitized input on an `fopen` call during a photo import.
This vulnerability would allow an attacker to effectively read any file on your internal network, including localhost.

In itself Lychee is not impacted. As in the attack will not compromise your photos, albums, etc.
Furthermore, the attacker needs to have access to an account with upload rights.

However, this still allows the attacker to use Lychee as a *proxy* and interact within your internal network/localhost.
For example, if you have a notification forwarding service with a GET webhook, that could be exploited to send a notification and start a phishing attack.

#### The Fix

We added multiple optional checks on the urls provided:

- validate that the url formatting
- validate that the scheme is http/https
- validate that the port if given is 80 or 443
- validate that if an ip is used it is not a local ip
- validate that localhost is not used.

All of them are enabled by default and can be disabled in the expert admin settings.

#### Persian, Right to Left (RTL) support, and invite links!

This is a small release that brings a few new features. A few weeks ago we added support for Arabic,
but that was without the proper reading direction support. By adding support for Persian, we also took the
time to add a full Right to Left (RTL) integration. There might still be some light display issues,
but we are confident our middle eastern users will appreciate this.

A bug that has been plaguing lychee for a while was that on mobile, the album header bar was disappearing when switching
to the photo view. We completely rewrote the way the header bar is displayed and this is now fixed.

In version 6.6.6 we added a new registration page. This was either on or off, but there was no way to filter who could register.
This release adds the ability to create invite links. As a result, you can keep the registration page disabled and create invite
links that you can share with your friends.

#### Security release: MAJOR Vulnerability fix (7.5)

Lychee version between 6.6.6 and 6.6.9 (included) are vulnerable to a path traversal attack.
This leads the attacker being able to read any files on the server, including `/etc/passwd` and `.env` files...

#### What to do?

We strongly recommend that you consider your installation compromised and rotate your secret key using `php artisan key:generate`.
If you are using docker you can do this by running the following command:  
```bash
docker exec -it <lychee_app> php artisan key:generate
```
Or modify the value of `APP_KEY` in your `.env` file. This will also invalidate all existing sessions.

#### The vulnerability

This vulnerability misuses the `$path` variable sent to the server, which is used to access the photos via the `SecurePathController`.  
We wrongly assumed that `Storage::disk(StorageDiskType::LOCAL->value)->path($path);` was protected against path traversal attacks which lead to this vulnerability.

When both the encrypted links and the temporary links are disabled, it is possible to call the endpoint with path values that are out of scope. Ironically, by enabling either of the functionality, the endpoint becomes secure again.

#### The fix

We applied defense in depth:

1. when neither functionality is enabled, we directly return a 401/403 error on any call to `/image/{path}`.
2. when either of the functionalities are enabled, we check that the `$path` value generated by `Storage::disk(StorageDiskType::LOCAL->value)->path($path);` is within the intended image directory. Should this happen, we return a 418 error code (I'm a teapot) which can later be used to detect malicious calls and combined with fail-2-ban to block the IP address of the attacker.

#### Spicy change: Photo and Album relationships, Colour palette extraction and more!

Evil number, spicy changes. This release brings a big turn in the way photos and albums are related to each other.
Before version 6.6.6, a photo could only be in one album at a time. This was a willing decision aimed at simplifying the way
photos were accessed and rights were handled. As a result, duplicates would effectively be duplicated rows in the database, which in itself, does not pose a problem of storage.
However, as I was implementing one of the coming feature: a *Timelines* page, it became clear that this was not going to be usable.
Duplicates would be displayed successively in such page and it would be impossible to distinguish them. This became the main reason for this change.

While doing this change, it also became clear that legacy ids for albums could no longer be preserved.
As a result, we dropped the legacy ids for albums and photos. This means that the remnants of API v1 are now completely gone.

This release also brings the support of two new languages: Arabic and Dutch. The former is still in early steps as we are still using the Left-to-Right (LTR) layout,
but we are planning to also add Persian (fa) and with it a full Right-to-Left (RTL) display.

We also added a registration page, which you can enable/disable in your settings.

Finally for the great supporters of Lychee we added two new features:

- The ability to create user-groups. This functionality is currently hidden behind a feature flag, but we are planning to make it available soon.
  This will allow you to create groups of users and share albums with those groups, simplifying the sharing process.
- The extraction of the dominant colour palette from photos (you will need to enable it in your settings).

#### iFrame integration support and auto open upload popup

One of our users noticed that version 6 was not working within iFrames. This is because we have secure headers
to avoid clickjacking. We added one `.env` variable `SECURITY_HEADER_CSP_FRAME_ANCESTORS` (empty by default)
which allows to add the domains that are allowed to load Lychee in an iFrame. Note that this kind of integration
of Lychee is not recommended as the cookies will also be set with the policy `SameSite=None`.
If you wish to use iFrames, to make sure that the configuration remains secure,
you will also have to set the `SESSION_SECURE_COOKIE` to `true` in your `.env` file.

The second change is a small one, but it is a nice addition: by adding `#upload` to a Lychee album url,
the upload popup will be automatically opened. This is aimed as users who wish to give an upload link to their friends.
Note that this will require you to have guest upload enabled in the album settings.

#### Weblate integration, improved pdf support & live metrics

As you most likely noticed, most of the translations in Lychee are gone since version 6.
This is due to the hard reset of the localization files. However in order to get back to our 
former localized state, we have integrated Weblate in our workflow.

Weblate is a web-based translation management system that allows you to translate Lychee in your own language.
The changes are then proposed to our repository and we can easily integrate them in our codebase.

Finally, version 6.6.1 also brings a few bug fixes and a new feature for our Supporter Edition users:
Live Metrics. This feature allows you to see the number of visits/downloads/shares of your photos/albums in real time.

#### Legacy is gone and improved image security

To put it simply, we are getting rid of the legacy v4 code.
This change is significant for two reasons. First of all, it means that the API v1 is now completely gone.
But more importantly, this is a big change for us, as we have been using the v4 codebase as a safety net for a long time.
If something breaks, there will no longer be an easy flag that disables the complete vue-js front-end and fallbacks to the v4 codebase.

This fallback process has been extremely useful to us when we deployed the version 5, and in early version 6. However we are now satisfied with the current state of the front-end and we no longer think that the fallback to v4 is needed.

One may wonder why we decided to do this change, and to that there are two big reasons:

- We no longer will need to maintain a legacy compatibility. Cleaning old code bases is part of the life cycle of a project, and we are now at the point where we can do this.
- We are planning to refactor the way images are attached to albums. We decided to go in the direction of a many-to-many relationship. In layman terms, this means that a photo can be in multiple albums at the same time. This behaviour is not compatible with the API v1 definitions. This relationship change is going to have significant impact on the way photos access rights are handled, but we are confident this will also enable us to provide more interesting features in the future.

Now moving on from this 45 000 lines of code removal, we also simplified the way photos are shared. In the past in order to avoid hot-links we had to create symbolic links that expired. This was a bit of a hack. We now provide the option to use signed urls. This ensures that the photo is only available for a limited amount of time. Our SE users will also be happy to know that the url of the photo can also be encrypted, making sure that nobody can access the photo by guessworks.

#### Hot-fix : force cache clear on version update.

We noticed that for use of caching, when doing an update there is a desynchronization between
the expected response from the front-end and the cached response from the backend.
This leaves Lychee in a temporary broken state depending on the ttl parameter of the cache (by default 1 day).
In order to avoid complaints, we force the cache to be cleared on patch/minor/major version changes.

#### Mostly a klo release, but a spicy one!

One of the weakness of our codebase was a constant mix between camelCase and snake_case.
This was due to the combination of:
- the database attributes being in snake_case
- the old style php being in snake_case
- some recent contributions being in camelCase
- Matthias and Ildyria are also a enterprise grade developers (understand Java, C++, C#) and we are used to camelCase.

As a result, ppshobi decided to write a rector rule to convert all the code base to a single standard.
After further thoughts, we decided to go with snake_case. This is a bit more verbose, but it is easier to read when you are not use to camelCase.

#### Localization Reset !

With the version 6, a lot of the strings were still hard coded in the front-end.
We have now moved all the strings to the back-end and we have had to reset the localization.
This means that all the strings are now in English and you will have to re-translate them.

If you would like to help us have a look at your language files in the `resources/lang` folder and submit a PR.
Please ignore the lychee.php file as it is the Legacy file and will be removed in a future version.

#### Caching for performance improvements

Lychee version 6.3 provides significant performance improvements by adding support for caching the API GET request.
**This feature is disabled by default** and **can be enabled in the settings**.

If you would like to use redis as a cache driver, you can set the following values in your `.env` (or similar):

#### Dropping Livewire for Vue3

When we released version 5, we did not realize how much of a mistake switching to Livewire was.
Lychee's front-end became slow and sluggish, plagued with issues.
Most of the time as a work around, we had to advise users to disable version 5 of the front-end
by setting the environment variable `LIVEWIRE_ENABLED=false`.

With this in mind, at the end of June we came to the conclusion that we needed to build a new front-end from scratch.
We decided to go with Vue3, as it is a more mature framework and has a lot of support. This marks the begining of the Lychee version 6.

#### Introducing Lychee SE

For the past few years, Lychee has been developed by a [small group of people](https://lycheeorg.dev/support/) who have been working on it in their free time. We are proud to offer this software for free and we will continue to do so. However with time our team has decreased to the point where maintaining Lychee has become a challenge. #### Important Docker Changes

If you are consuming Lychee via Docker, you will probably need to update your `docker-compose.yml` file.
In order solve the issue of temporary folders in the container, we added an extra volume `/lychee-tmp` which
by default with the updated `docker-compose.yml` will be mapped to `./lychee/tmp`, see [here](https://github.com/LycheeOrg/Lychee-Docker/blob/master/docker-compose.yml).

This volume allows you to control the temporary folder and avoid the issue of running out of space in the container.

#### Support for Oauth

Version 5.1.0 adds support for Oauth with the following providers:

- amazon
- apple
- facebook
- github
- google
- mastodon
- microsoft
- nextcloud

You will need to register your app to those providers and get your client id and secret.
Those should then be placed in your `.env` file. See `.env.example` for templates.

Note that Oauth is only usable once the user exists in Lychee database;
it is not possible to register directly via Oauth.

#### New settings on `APP_URL`

From this version Lychee v5 supports hosting with sub-folders. Please update your `.env` as follows:

- `APP_URL` **must** only contain the hostname up to the Top Level Domain (tld) e.g. .com, .org etc.

If you are using Lychee in a sub folder, specify the path after the tld here in the `APP_DIR` constant.
For example for `https://lychee.test/path/to/lychee`:

- `new` : New ID scheme. Albums and photos are migrated to a new ID scheme. Previously, albums and photos used time-based integer IDs. The new IDs are truly 144bit of randomness encoded in Base64 as a 24-character string; e.g., if your photo had the URL `https://my-domain.tld/r/16102925744307/16102927818284` before, it may have the URL `https://my-domain.tld/r/GTqZfSso3nPeCnTNW4ovisgC/jM6KkmlK7X0LtVas5MjrHtTO` after the migration. This means, **external links to your albums or photos will stop working.** However, we implemented a redirection service. You can enable/disable the re-direction service under `Settings` > `More` > `legacy_id_redirection`. This gives you time to migrate any external reference to the new IDs. We also generate a log entry every time the redirection service is used. This log contains the legacy and new ID as well as information where the request came from. This may help you with the migration of your external links.

    - Deep directory structure.  Instead of all images of a certain kind residing in a single, flat directory (potentially containing thousands of files), we now have two additional two-letter directory levels under each kind (e.g., images are stored as `medium/ba/d0/9a28ec995ead4877dfa1befa2d3b.jpg`).
