Does anyone know when Motion version 5.0 will be released?

There is not any specific date.

It currently breaks some historical compatibility which has some people all ***** and its preventing the new functionality included in v5 from moving forward. So the project needs to determine whether to accept the breaks or mitigate at least some of them. And if the plan is determined to be mitigation then it is a matter of dedicating time to those efforts.

(Ultimately it will get released...its just not a definitive date)

Could you please clarify what exactly the backward compatibility issue is?
Does it mean that the old configuration can no longer be used at all, or only partially because some names or structures have changed?

I have found this out:
Raspberry Pi Foundation Deprecation: OpenMAX and MMAL are legacy APIs that the Raspberry Pi Foundation deprecated in favor of libcamera and V4L2 for Pi 4+. They are no longer actively maintained.

It seems libraries to connect to cameras, which Motion uses, are getting major overhauls which creates many problems while trying to keep Motion backwards compatible.
