What
A suggestion to evaluate tangled.org as a future alternative to GitHub for hosting the Community Platform codebase.
Why
ONEARMY's mission is built on open-source values, community ownership, and independence from corporate platforms. GitHub, while convenient, is owned by Microsoft — a for-profit corporation whose priorities may not always align with the open-source community.
tangled.org is a decentralized, open-source code collaboration platform built on the AT Protocol (the same protocol behind Bluesky). It offers:
- Decentralized hosting — no single corporate gatekeeper
- Open protocol — built on open standards, not proprietary infrastructure
- Community-first design — aligns with the ethos of projects like Precious Plastic, Project Kamp, and Fixing Fashion
Moving to a platform like this would be a statement that matches ONEARMY's values of building tools and communities that are truly free and open.
Scope
This is a long-term consideration, not an immediate ask. It would involve evaluating:
- Feature parity (issues, PRs, CI/CD, permissions)
- Migration path and tooling
- Community adoption and platform maturity
I'd be happy to help research and contribute to the migration process if the team decides to move forward with this.
