Ryver: How to use it inside BeCode

Ryver is Becode's internal communication tool. It serves as:

  • instant messaging tool (like Whatsapp or Skype),
  • private messaging,
  • communal communication, allowing you to share with small groups or with all the people involved in Becode (octocats, deformers and the magic dreamers (aka the staff that makes Becode possible)).

You can use Ryver on all your devices: via the webapp, the iphone application, or Android.

How to begin on Ryver?

  1. Download Ryver on your favorite devices.
  2. Log in to your community: becode.ryver.com.
  3. Complete your profile: Use your first name following by your last name. It is necessary that you use your name because it's a professionnal environment and because there's a lit of people in BeCode so it's important we can find easily you to communicate with you.
  4. Use a profile picture that show you. Use a recent photo of you. Not an illustration, not a picture of you as a baby. We need to be sure we're talking to the right person.
  5. Read carefully what follows:

Two kind of messages: Post vs. Chat

By default, we send messages by Chat.
Sometimes (even often in fact) the discussion is centered on a well-defined subject. In this case, one can create a Post: either directly or by converting a Chat message to Post, which allows to have a main text and a comment thread associated to the Post.

Two kind of places: Forums vs. Teams

Two differents way to have a discussion with a lot of people: via "teams" and via "forums".

Difference between Forums and Teams

Forums are accessible to everyone. Teams are limited to the persons invited to the creator of the Team.

Each promo has its own Team. For example BXL-Johnson-2.5, CRL-Turing-2.6. Most of your messages will be sent to your promo's team.

If you think your message is interesting for the whole community of Becode, then publish it in one of those forums:

  • BeCode Global (EN only / keep it professional!)
  • Tech News to share what you find interesting during your daily technical watch
  • Events: you know there's a great meetup, an awesome conference, a badass festival of code, a hackathon to come up and you want everyone has the chance to go? That's the channel.
  • Stam Café (Gifs, rants, heated discussions) for everything else

Where to post your message?

  • if for one person: via DM (direct and private message)
  • if for several people: create a Team
  • if for your promo: in your promo Team.
  • if for everyone, for one of the forums available. If you're not sure, post it in Stam Café (Gifs, rants, heated discussions).

Some rules

  • The same way you communicate by email, be respectful:
    • remain polite and constructive
    • always ask yourself the question: "what is this message going to interest, and why?"
    • Do not just throw a link: Tell us why it's interesting. Your introduction will also help to find it via the search tool.
    • Only contact the people concerned (so choose either an MP or your team and finally, an adequate forum (in doubt, put it in "Stam Café").
    • Do not send a link without having read it completely!
    • If you have a conflict with someone and you start being upset, PLEASE put down your keyboard, breathe some fresh air, wait ten minutes that the emotion passes, then talk to the person, calmly, in person, IRL. The computer is not the right medium for settling disputes.

Forums
