Implementation Plan: Custom Theme Support

Context

Buckaroo's light/dark themes are hardcoded — colors live in gridUtils.ts, DFViewerInfinite.tsx (AccentColor = "#2196F3"), and dcf-npm.css. Users embedding Buckaroo into another app can't override these colors. The existing component_config parameter already flows from Python → dataflow → JS, so we piggyback on it.

Approach: Add theme to ComponentConfig

A flat ThemeConfig dict nested in the existing ComponentConfig. This rides the existing pipeline (no new traitlets, no new sync wiring, works in Jupyter + standalone + Storybook).

ThemeConfig shape (6 properties to start)

Add ThemeConfig TypedDict and add 'theme': NotRequired[ThemeConfig] to ComponentConfig.

No dataflow changes needed — component_config already flows through CustomizableDataflow (line 488-489 of buckaroo/dataflow/dataflow.py).

Add ThemeConfig type and theme?: ThemeConfig to ComponentConfig.

Thread themeConfig?: ThemeConfig as optional prop. Pass themeConfig to getThemeForScheme() in its theme useMemo. Parent components to update:

6. CSS custom properties — packages/buckaroo-js-core/src/style/dcf-npm.css

Replace key hardcoded colors with var(--bk-*) references that fall back to current values:

• #0056b3 → derived hover (darken of accent)
• rgba(33, 150, 243, 0.49) → var(--bk-accent-color) with opacity for active tab

1. Avoid duplicate scheme logic

Allow users to pass a custom theme config to override default colors, fonts, and spacing.

Steps

1. Define theme schema — a Python dict/dataclass with keys like:

   • header_background, header_text_color
   • cell_background, cell_text_color, cell_font_family, cell_font_size
   • row_height, header_height
   • border_color, selection_color
   • ag_grid_theme (e.g. 'ag-theme-alpine', 'ag-theme-balham')

2. Python: Accept theme parameter — add theme= parameter to BuckarooWidget, BuckarooInfiniteWidget, and polars variants. Serialize to JSON and pass to the JS front-end via traitlets.

3. JS: Apply theme — on the AG Grid side:

   • Set AG Grid theme class from config
   • Apply CSS custom properties (variables) for colors/fonts

Status: Already implemented on main

Custom theme support was added in PR #516 (commit d0f0230). The implementation includes:

• ThemeConfig (colorScheme, accentColor, backgroundColor, etc.) nested in ComponentConfig
• Theme handling in buckaroo/dataflow/styling_core.py and buckaroo/server/handlers.py
• Playwright tests in pw-tests/theme-screenshots-marimo.spec.ts
• Storybook story: ThemeCustomization.stories.tsx

There's also an open PR #583 (feat: add custom theme support via component_config) that may extend this further.

Recommend closing this issue as the core feature is implemented. Any remaining enhancements (more preset themes, UI theme picker) can be filed as separate follow-ups.
