Scalable and Efficient Big Data Processing in Clouds: Addressing Performance Variability
73+
Clouds can provide abundant resources to meet the ever-increasing computing and storage demands of data processing, making Clouds the primary infrastructure for Big Data processing. However, the unprecedented scale of Clouds and multi-tenancy nature leads to the critical challenge of performance variability and causes stragglers that delay Big Data processing. MapReduce uses speculative execution to mitigate stragglers. State-of-the-art straggler mitigation mechanisms assume homogeneous resources and is not efficient in Clouds (for both detection and processing). In the talk, I will show that providing adequate and timely resources for starting speculative copies is important to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of straggler mitigation mechanisms.
