Character encoding data
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The simple-font encoding tables in crates/ethos-parser-pdf/src/encoding.rs
(WinAnsiEncoding, the ASCII range of StandardEncoding, and a glyph-name subset
for /Differences) are transcriptions of PDF 32000-1 (ISO 32000-1:2008) Annex D,
a published specification. They were authored for this project.

Adobe Core-14 font metrics (APAFML)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
vendor/afm/ contains Adobe's 14 PostScript(R) AFM files, unmodified, together
with their licence file MustRead.html. They are vendored by decision #22 of
docs/00-NORTH-STAR.md, whose measurement is docs/20-STANDARD-14-METRICS-SCOPE.md.
Copyright (c) 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1997 Adobe Systems Incorporated.
All Rights Reserved. (Each .afm carries its own copyright line; the years
differ by file and are retained as Adobe wrote them.)
The licence is APAFML. Its full text is vendor/afm/MustRead.html, which must be
distributed WITH the AFM files and is reproduced there byte-exact, including its
original line endings, because the licence requires that its paragraph not be
modified. In Adobe's words, the files "may be used, copied, and distributed for
any purpose and without charge, with or without modification, provided that all
copyright notices are retained; that the AFM files are not distributed without
this file; that all modifications to this file or any of the AFM files are
prominently noted in the modified file(s); and that this paragraph is not
modified."
Nothing in vendor/afm/ is modified, so no file there carries a modification
note. Anything generated FROM these files would be a modified file and must
carry one. The engine embeds them verbatim with include_str! and parses at
runtime, so no generated table exists today.
APAFML is NOT OSI-approved and is deliberately absent from deny.toml. That
allowlist governs crate licences in the resolved dependency graph; these are
data files and never enter it, the same as the Adobe CMap data described below.
An entry cargo-deny could never match is the "just in case" entry that file's
header forbids. The consequence is stated rather than hidden: a non-OSI-approved
licence is present in this repository and CI is green, because no tool here can
check it. The review is decision #22, this notice, and vendor/afm/README.md.

Adobe Glyph List (BSD-3-Clause)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
vendor/agl/glyphlist.txt is Adobe's Glyph List, table version 2.0, unmodified,
vendored by decision #59 of docs/00-NORTH-STAR.md (source and checksum in
vendor/agl/README.md). The engine embeds it verbatim with include_str! and reads
it at runtime. It carries this notice, reproduced here as its licence requires
for distributions in binary form:

Adobe mapping resources for PDF (BSD-3-Clause)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
vendor/adobe-mapping-resources-pdf/ holds Adobe's CID-to-Unicode mapping
resources for Adobe-Japan1, Adobe-GB1, Adobe-CNS1, Adobe-Korea1 and Adobe-KR,
unmodified, vendored by decision #78 of docs/00-NORTH-STAR.md (source and
checksums in vendor/adobe-mapping-resources-pdf/README.md). The engine embeds
them verbatim with include_str! and reads them at runtime. Each carries this
notice, each with its own year range (1990-2019 to 1990-2023), reproduced here
from the repository's LICENSE.txt as the licence requires for distributions in
binary form:

Adobe CMap resources: NOT PRESENT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No Adobe predefined CMap resource files (.bcmap or otherwise) are present in
this repository, so no notice for them is currently required (the Adobe Glyph
List and the CID-to-Unicode mapping resources above carry their own).
The M3 plan called for vendoring the ~168 predefined CJK CMaps. They are not
here, and that is a declared decision rather than an oversight: nothing in the
conformance corpus exercises them, and committing binary data that no test
touches means shipping data nobody has verified. A document naming a predefined
CMap is REFUSED with a named error rather than decoded approximately, and the
gap is declared as the limitation code `predefined-cmaps-not-vendored` inside
`assurance.limitations`, on every PDF artifact this engine emits — classify and extract
alike, since both take their list from `backend_limitations()`. This paragraph named an
extract artifact's `not_decoded` list until v2-S13.3; that was M3's spelling, M4 absorbed
the list into the L1 gate, and no artifact has carried the field since. The office readers
do not carry this code at all, and correctly: it names what a PDF backend could not decode.
When those files land — with a fixture that proves they work — they belong under
vendor/cmaps/ with the Adobe BSD 3-Clause licence text reproduced there and this
section replaced by the attribution.
See vendor/README.md for the full vendoring posture. The Adobe Glyph List was
absent for the same reason until decision #59, and Adobe's CID-to-Unicode
mappings until decision #78; both are now present, in their sections above.
The Core-14 AFM metrics were absent for that reason too until decision #22; they
are now present, under the APAFML section above.
