there are very old PRs and while the library works fine, it seems there aren't enough resources to process them.

I have pushed updates to the code. If it isn't merged, I would create a new repo that uses with the improvements.

Check out python_clamd, an actively maintained rewrite of the clamd library.
Since this library isn't actively maintained, I have written a fork of the repo I would try to maintain.
