IDEA: Play to pay music (directly)

Extracted from 7/11 MIT Media Lab (Digital Currency Initiative) x Mediachain Brainstorm Doc:

Consumer Description:

“A way to support the artists who’s music you listened to directly”

Technical Description:

System for identifying a song, looking up associated payment terms (Bitcoin address?) and remitting payment.
Fingerprint/Keyword Search → Mediachain Identifier → Bitcoin address

Thesis:

The music library is a commodity, abstracted by new UIs (e.g. Echo → Spotify/Pandora/Amazon)
An open, decentralized library allows for more innovation (new UIs), and more direct relationships between consumers and creators/rights owners.

Music app stack (top → bottom)

  • Interface (UI, Curation, etc)
  • Payments (BTC/ETH)
  • Search → Decentralized, Canonical Content Index (IDs, Descriptive Metadata, Usage Data)
  • Binary Media (IPFS, Youtube, Soundcloud [APIs], S3, BitTorrent)

Strategies for ingesting binary media:

  • Bot (reddit/twitter/facebook messenger/whatsapp)
  • Browser extension (e.g. Chrome extension to fingerprint / lookup fingerprint / prompt(?) to send bitcoin / mark usage data)
  • MVP could be keyword (artist/title) search, then audio fingerprinting
  • iOS8 app extensions (share)
  • APIs (login with Spotify, Soundcloud)

Strategies for building Canonical media index

  • Ingest MusicBrainz
  • Last.fm Scrobbling
  • Scrape TK- Identify other canonical data sources

Next Steps:

  • Define MVP
  • Break-out issues
  • Set Timeline/Milestones
