I think more work is needed on the API for this, the username can't just be blank... and I feel like it would need to have more filters e.g. minimum of 100 games

True, the leaderboard would just default to public_id (eg: "DxpkLcIn"), or 'noname' or similar, if user is 'null' or username is hidden. (#1754 : Add player profile public toggle)

You would only be able to make filters from the information on https://api.openfront.io/leaderboard/public/ffa to address this issue unless there is restructure, it is a list of the top 15 players based on their win:lose ratios. (#2452 : Add UI for clan leaderboard (example of making different leaderboards for different filters))
