Hosted Control Plane (HCP) architecture for OSD on Google Cloud #200

@shreyansvm

Description

@shreyansvm

A new deployment model of OSD in which the control plane will be hosted in the Red Hat owned GCP project, and worker nodes in customer GCP project.

Benefits:
Cost Savings:

  • Customer reduce significant costs when compared with hosting control plane in their own GCP project
  • Quickly and easily spin up or tear down clusters when needed for efficiency and cost savings

Operational efficiency:

  • Faster provisioning time for a new cluster
  • Seamless autoscaling of control plane at no additional cost

Increased reliability:

  • Control plane is always HA over multiple availability zones
  • Selectively upgrade control plane and worker nodes separately
  • Increased resiliency from offloading control plane infra management, reducing the chance of accidental misconfiguration or deletion of resources

Private Preview of the Hosted Control Plane (HCP) architecture for Google Cloud is targeted for Q4-2026, and GA is tentatively targeted for 1H-2027
