DataSync to create data snapshot in the portal

Updating the dataset using the portal interface creates a snapshot of the existing dataset. Is there a way to create a snapshot of the existing dataset before publishing updates using DataSync?

Seconded, to the degree possible. I do realize there might be some performance issues with small updates to large datasets, although possibly solvable with a bit of engineering.
