I’m Takashi Kitao, a former game developer and lead programmer on the ZOE series. I’m also a co-author and supervisor of Learn Python by Making Games!

I develop open-source software that expands what people can do with game creation and programming.

Pyxel: a retro game engine used around the world

Pyxel

Pyxel is a retro game engine for Python. I’ve continued developing it since its release in 2018, and it now has over 18,000 stars on GitHub. It’s used around the world, from schools and programming classes to commercially released games.

Pyxel community games and milestone celebration

Its simple API comes with built-in pixel art and sound editors. Games run on Windows, Mac, Linux, and in the browser. I’m building an environment where beginners can create their first game and experienced developers can enjoy working within retro constraints.

Pyxel is available under the MIT license and is free to use in commercial games.

Playload: a game engine that packs the game itself into a URL

I’ve also released Playload, a tiny game engine that packs the game itself into a shareable URL.

Write code and run it directly in your browser. Share the finished game simply by sending its URL, without distributing files or uploading the game to a server. The recipient can also open the code and customize the game.

It connects creating, playing, and sharing games through a single URL.

Support my work

Alongside developing new features and creative tools for Pyxel and Playload, I test them across operating systems and browsers, keep up with platform updates, fix bugs, and maintain documentation and examples.

Devices used for Pyxel development and compatibility testing

Keeping these tools freely available to people around the world and continuing their development requires time and testing environments. To support this work, I’m asking for contributions through GitHub Sponsors.

Your contributions fund test devices, technical reference materials, and ongoing development and maintenance.

If you use these tools for your projects, teaching, or work, or want to support their continued development, I’d appreciate your support. Both recurring and one-time contributions are welcome.
