Summary of Changes

This PR removes the hardcoded/mock tournament data from the Tournament Arena and Tournament Bracket pages and wires the existing frontend to the real tournament backend APIs.

Changes include:

  • Fetch tournaments from GET /tournaments
  • Display real tournament status, participant counts, dates, and descriptions
  • Use POST /tournaments/:id/join when joining a public tournament
  • Refresh tournament data after a successful join
  • Show correct action states for the authenticated user:
    • Hosting for the tournament host
    • Joined for existing participants
    • Full when participant capacity is reached
    • Join Tournament when the tournament is available
  • Fetch the selected tournament using GET /tournaments/:id
  • Use the route tournament ID instead of hardcoded tournament information
  • Remove the hardcoded participant list and fabricated bracket champion
  • Render actual registered participants in the tournament bracket
  • Render unused participant positions as open slots
  • Avoid displaying fabricated winner/champion information when the current backend API does not provide persisted tournament results
  • Replace mocked past tournament participant data with backend tournament data

Addressed Issues:

Fixes #734

Screenshots/Recordings:

Before

Different tournament IDs displayed the same hardcoded participants and champion.

Tournament 1:

Tournament 1 showing hardcoded bracket

Tournament 6:

Tournament 6 showing the same hardcoded bracket

Both tournament routes displayed the same participants and champion despite using different tournament IDs.

After

The Tournament Arena now displays tournaments returned by the backend and reflects the authenticated user's actual relationship to each tournament.

image

I also tested the public tournament flow using a second authenticated account. The tournament was visible to the second account, and that account was able to join successfully.
image

End-to-end verification:

  • Account A created a public tournament
  • Account B could see the tournament
  • Account B successfully joined it through the backend API
  • The persisted participant count updated correctly
  • Account A displayed Hosting
  • Account B displayed Joined
  • Opening the bracket used the selected tournament's real backend data

Additional Notes:

The current tournament API does not expose persisted bracket winners or champion data on main, so this PR intentionally does not fabricate tournament results.

This PR does not implement bracket generation or progression logic. That work is separate from this issue and has related ongoing work in #654 and #690.

The existing Past Tournament "View Tournament" button issue is also not duplicated here because it is already being addressed separately in #726.

Validation performed locally:

cd frontend
npx tsc -b
npm run build

📝 Walkthrough

The tournament service now retrieves and joins backend tournaments. The hub uses API data for cards and join states. The bracket loads the selected tournament and renders its actual participants, open slots, byes, and status.

Changes: Tournament data flow

Tournament hub data and join flow

Tournament-specific bracket display
frontend/src/Pages/TournamentBracketPage.tsx
The bracket fetches the route-selected tournament and handles missing IDs, loading, fetch errors, and absent tournaments. It renders participant initials, optional stances, open slots, and byes from the configured capacity without fabricated winners or champion data.

Explanation

Issue #734 requirements are met. tournamentService.ts calls authenticated GET /tournaments, GET /tournaments/:id, and POST /tournaments/:id/join. TournamentHub.tsx uses backend participants and shows Hosting, Joined, Full, or Join Tournament. TournamentBracketPage.tsx uses the route ID, renders the selected tournament participants, shows open slots, and does not fabricate winner data. The issue does not define a separate automated-test requirement.

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #734. The changes replace mock tournament data, connect the arena and bracket pages to the tournament APIs, update join state, and remove fabricated results. Bracket progression and the past-tournament view action remain excluded work in the linked issue context. No unrelated change is demonstrated, mate.

Count avatar overflow from participants, not capacity.

With 2 participants and maxParticipants set to 11, this code renders six avatar slots and +5. The card therefore suggests additional participants that do not exist. Base visible and overflow on participants.length. If empty slots are intentional, label them as open slots instead of +N.

Fixed in 90c9529. Avatar visibility and overflow are now calculated from the actual participants.length instead of maxParticipants, so +N only represents real hidden participants. npx tsc -b and npm run build both pass.

Allow live tournaments to accept participants.

Direct-start tournaments receive status: "live", and JoinPublicTournament accepts public tournaments with available capacity without checking status. The current guard blocks these tournaments, so users cannot join them from the Tournament Hub.

Render a Bye only for an occupied final slot.

A tournament can use the default odd capacity of 11, and neither the form nor backend rejects odd values. When the final slot is unused, the last match renders Open slot for player1 and Bye for the nonexistent player2. A Bye is only correct when the final real slot contains a participant. Update the first-round match construction and rendering to distinguish a missing
second slot from a true bye: add a hasSecondSlot flag based on slot bounds, set
isBye only when the final real slot has a participant, and render the VS marker
and second participant only when hasSecondSlot or isBye applies. Preserve
open-slot rendering for an unused final slot.

control near the isHost, isParticipant, and isFull checks so live tournaments
remain joinable while completed tournaments stay disabled; replace the
upcoming-only status restriction with a completed-status check.

ℹ️ Review info

Addressed in 300b7cd.

  • Live public tournaments can now be joined when the user is not the host, is not already a participant, and the tournament is not full, matching the current backend behavior.
  • Odd-capacity brackets now render Bye only when the final real slot is occupied; an unused final slot remains an open slot.
  • Tournament content is preserved when a join request fails, and initial fetch failures no longer show misleading empty or past-tournament states.
  • Added documentation for the tournament data-flow functions.
Validation passed with ESLint, npx tsc -b, npm run build, and git diff --check.

tournament destination by adding the existing navigation behavior and passing
the completed tournament’s identifier; if that route is not available, remove
the button until the tracked View Tournament work is ready.
- Line 260: Update the TournamentHub join flow around handleJoin to track the
pending tournament ID and disable the corresponding Join Tournament button while
its request is in progress. Set the pending ID before starting the request and
clear it when the join flow finishes, including errors, while preserving the
existing isHost, isParticipant, and isFull disabled conditions.
