fix(community): make the comment form follow the active theme - #785
fix(community): make the comment form follow the active theme
The Community page renders in three themes — Light, Dark and High Contrast — but the comment
form and the comment list were painted with a fixed light palette, so they stayed white
on the dark themes while the rest of the page followed the theme.
This PR replaces those fixed colours with the app's theme tokens and adds regression tests
so the comment surface cannot go back to hard-coded colours.
frontend/src/components/CommentTree.tsx — the component that renders the comment form, the
reply box and the comment list — used Tailwind's literal palette classes instead of the
theme tokens the rest of the app uses:

The app themes itself through CSS variables on body.dark / body.contrast
(frontend/src/index.css:36-90) exposed as semantic Tailwind tokens
(frontend/tailwind.config.js:21-61). bg-white and text-gray-900 are literal palette
values — they carry no dark: or contrast variant — so they never move.
Dark theme, before — a white form and white comment bubbles on a dark page:
High Contrast theme, before — the same white box on a black page:
Root cause
Each surface picked its own literal colour, so nothing kept them in sync and nothing caught a
regression — the same class of problem as the stale brand strings, but in the styling layer
instead of the copy.
The fix
Every colour on the community comment surface now comes from a theme token, so it follows
Light, Dark and High Contrast with no per-theme duplication:
Also themed: the reply textarea, the author name, the timestamp, the comment body, the delete
action, the reply/cancel buttons, the thread border (2px solid hsl(var(--border)) instead of
the literal #e5e7eb), and the loading, error and empty states.
CommunityFeed.tsx
The surfaces rendered around the comment tree were hard-coded as well, so they are themed too:
the "Conversation" and "Phase Summaries" headings, the judge bubble, the post metadata, the
avatars, the error banner, the empty state and the result badge (which keeps its green/red
meaning and only swaps the shades for the dark theme).
Before / after
Dark theme — the form and the comments now follow the theme:
High Contrast theme — a black form with a visible border:
Close-ups of the form itself:
Dark theme
High Contrast theme
The light theme is unchanged
The theme tokens resolve to the same colours in the light palette, so the page looks exactly as
it did before:
Tests
Three new test files, 5 new test cases, all of which fail if a fixed palette colour comes
back to the community comment surface.
frontend/src/test/community-theme.test.ts — guard test
Scans CommentTree.tsx and CommunityFeed.tsx and fails with the offending class if a fixed palette colour is used without a theme-aware counterpart:
× community theme > has no colour that is pinned to a fixed palette
→ expected [ 'Pages/CommunityFeed.tsx: bg-green-100', … ] to deeply equal []
It also rejects literal colour values (the old 2px solid #e5e7eb thread border).
the new comment form and its textarea use bg-background / text-foreground / border-input
and no longer carry bg-white / text-gray-900 / border-gray-300;
existing comments, their timestamps and the reply box use the theme tokens;
the signed-out prompt uses border-border / text-muted-foreground.
frontend/src/Pages/__tests__/CommunityFeed.test.tsx — the reported scenario
Renders the Community page, opens the comments of a post and asserts that the comment form that
appears there is themed — the exact flow from the issue.
The guards were proven to work
With the source changes reverted and only the tests in place, all 5 new tests fail on the
old code and pass on the new code:
× community theme > has no colour that is pinned to a fixed palette
× CommunityFeed > renders the comment form with theme-aware colours
× CommentTree theming > styles the new comment form with theme tokens instead of fixed light colours
× CommentTree theming > styles existing comments, timestamps and the reply box with theme tokens
× CommentTree theming > styles the signed-out prompt with theme tokens
no new problems (the 5 findings in CommentTree.tsx are byte-identical before and after this change)

Improvements
Community posts, comments, reply forms, timestamps, and signed-out prompts now use theme-aware colors, providing a more consistent appearance across light and dark themes.
Comment cards use a muted background with a brightness-based hover effect. Result badges continue to distinguish wins and losses while adapting to dark themes.
Existing feed and comment interactions remain unchanged.
The Community comment form and the comment list were built with fixed
light-palette Tailwind classes (bg-white, text-gray-900, bg-gray-50,
border-gray-200, border-gray-300), so they stayed white while the rest of
the page followed the Dark and High Contrast themes.
- Replace the fixed colours with the theme tokens (bg-background,
text-foreground, bg-muted, border-border, border-input,
text-muted-foreground, text-destructive)
- Theme the reply box, the thread border, the delete action and the
loading, error and empty states
- Theme the Community surfaces around the comment tree (post meta,
avatars, result badge, transcript preview, error and empty states)
- Add regression tests: theme assertions for the comment form, a Community
page test and a guard test that fails on any fixed palette colour in the
community comment surface
The PR replaces fixed color classes in the community feed and comment tree with theme-aware classes. It adds dark-mode badge variants and tests that check component styling and scan for fixed-color utilities.

Summary
Theme-aware community surfaces frontend/src/Pages/CommunityFeed.tsx, frontend/src/components/CommentTree.tsx
Feed, transcript, and comment surfaces use theme-aware text, border, background, and destructive classes. Result badges retain their light-mode colors and add dark-mode variants.
Component tests check theme classes in comment forms and related states. A static test scans both components for fixed-palette utilities and hex colors.
Error messages may be difficult to read in Light theme. The change is otherwise mergeable with this accessibility issue noted.

Explanation
Issue #744 asks that the Community comment form and textarea follow the active theme. Its coding requirements are: (a) the form and textarea use a light background with dark text in Light, dark background with light text in Dark, and a dark background, high-contrast text and visible borders in High Contrast; (b) the reply textarea is covered; (c) the Light theme appearance is not affected; and (d) hard-coded classes are replaced with existing theme-aware classes.
Evidence from the PR description and change summary: in frontend/src/components/CommentTree.tsx, bg-white, text-gray-900 and border-gray-300 on the new-comment form and textarea are replaced with bg-background, text-foreground and border-input. The form container uses border-border with a dark:border-white/20 variant, and the textarea has a [.contrast_&]:border-white override, which gives visible borders in High Contrast. The reply textarea and reply box are themed too. The summary describes CommentTree.test.tsx assertions for the new form, the reply box, existing comments and the signed-out prompt. These are supporting tests, and the guard test in community-theme.test.ts checks for fixed palette colours.
Requirement (c) is met in substance, but the PR claim that the Light theme is unchanged is not exact. The PR's own token table gives Light values that differ from the replaced literals: bg-gray-50 (#f9fafb) becomes bg-muted (#f9f9f7), text-gray-500 (#6b7280) becomes text-muted-foreground (#78716c), and border-gray-300 (#d1d5db) becomes border-input (#e7e5e4). The shifts are small. The Light form still has a light background and dark text, which is the Light expectation in #744.
No unmet coding requirement was found in the supplied evidence. No repository inspection tool was available in this session, so the assessment relies on the PR description, the change summary and the issue text. The token values in frontend/src/index.css were not read directly.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The core changes match #744. They are the colour class swaps in CommentTree.tsx that cover the comment form, textareas, comment bubbles, timestamps, thread border, and loading, error and empty states. The matching tests are supporting work for the same objective. The change summary reports no logic, control-flow or API changes in CommentTree.tsx or CommunityFeed.tsx.
CommunityFeed.tsx goes beyond the comment form. The PR also themes the Phase Summaries heading, the judge bubble, post metadata, avatars, the error banner, the empty state, the result badge and TranscriptPreview. #744 says the surrounding Community page already updates correctly. These surfaces use the same defect class, the same theme tokens and the same page, so they are not shown to be unrelated. The 'Conversation' heading sits inside the comment area and is directly connected. Reviewers may still prefer the wider page theming in a separate change.
The new test files (community-theme.test.ts, CommentTree.test.tsx, CommunityFeed.test.tsx) support the objective and are not out of scope. The thread border change from the literal #e5e7eb to hsl(var(--border)) is a styling change within the same objective.
No demonstrated unrelated change was found.

Scope colour matching to each className attribute.
The guard currently combines colour families across the whole file. A restored text-gray-500 feed metadata class can therefore be exempted by the result badge’s text-gray-800 dark:text-gray-200 pair. Group each attribute separately. This preserves the paired badge and catches the unpaired metadata colour without adding a redundant component assertion.

Increase the light-theme error-text contrast.
When the feed fails to load, text-destructive on bg-destructive/10 has approximately 3.3:1 contrast in the light theme. Small error text needs at least 4.5:1. The changed error text in frontend/src/components/CommentTree.tsx uses the same token. Use a darker light-theme error-text color while keeping the themed background and border, mate. fix(community): make the comment form follow the active theme
The problem
frontend/src/components/CommentTree.tsx— the component that renders the comment form, thereply box and the comment list — used Tailwind's literal palette classes instead of the
theme tokens the rest of the app uses:
