Brian W. Bauer, Ph.D.

Computational researcher working at the intersection of applied machine learning and population mental health. Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia and founder of a research intelligence platform built on the Anthropic Claude API.

Current work

  • Transformer-based detection of psychological crisis from unstructured text at scale — social media, ecological momentary assessment, clinical narratives. Federally funded through NIH, DoD, and VA.
  • Quasi-experimental causal inference on AI-adjacent policy shocks affecting population mental health outcomes. Methods: staggered difference-in-differences, propensity score and risk-set matching, cost-effectiveness modeling.
  • Generative AI and Deaths of Despair — theoretical and empirical work on AI-driven credential depreciation as a structural population health risk. Manuscript under review at Journal of Public Health Policy.
  • Research intelligence SaaS on the Claude API — production application for dynamic researcher profile construction, hallucination-resistant synthesis, and temporal knowledge graphs over peer-reviewed literature.

Technical focus

Python · PyTorch · Hugging Face Transformers · Claude and OpenAI APIs · BERTopic · UMAP/HDBSCAN · staggered difference-in-differences · Bayesian estimation · ecological momentary assessment pipelines
