build!: drop Node.js 20, require 22.12.0 or newer - #2159
Since v1.15.0, people who can't upgrade Node can use the standalone binary or Homebrew, so dropping Node 20 no longer strands anyone.
What it does
Area
Change
package.json engines
>=20.19.0 → >=22.12.0 (the floor vitest 5, vite 8 and commander 15 all need)
CI
The oldest-supported test jobs on Linux, macOS and Windows plus the lint/coverage jobs move from 20.19.0 to 22.12.0. Job labels are unchanged, so required-check names still match. Node 22 (latest) and 24 jobs stay.
Notes that Node 20 is EOL and points people who can't upgrade to the binary or Homebrew
.github/dependabot.yml
Removes the chalk-major ignore, which existed only for Node 20
Changeset
minor, with the release note starting Breaking: and the binary install commands
Proof it works
Build and lint are clean locally. vitest run has the same 10 sandbox-only failures as main (config-edit, config-profile and artifact-workflow), which pass in CI.
CI on this PR runs the full matrix on 22.12.0 across all three OSes.
No source code checks the Node version; npm enforces the floor through engines.
Notes / nits
Semver call: the changeset is minor, matching how most CLIs drop EOL Node versions. Change it to major if you'd rather ship 2.0.
Left alone on purpose: @types/node stays at ^20 (an older types floor is still type-safe), and so do README_OLD.md, the archived/in-flight change docs and a Node.js 20 example in docs/multi-language.md.
Announce it with the release note plus one Discord message; no blog post.
Node 20 reached end-of-life on 2026-04-30. Raises engines, the CI
oldest-supported test jobs, the binary/security workflows, the install
scripts' npm hint and the install/troubleshooting docs to 22.12.0, and
removes the Dependabot chalk-6 ignore that existed only for Node 20.
Unblocks vitest 5 (#2151, #2152) and commander 15.

The package’s minimum Node.js version changes from 20.19.0 to 22.12.0. Installation and development guidance, CI and security workflows, and binary build workflows are updated to match. The changeset also identifies installation options that do not require Node.

Summary
Package requirement and installer guidance .changeset/*, package.json, openspec/config.yaml, scripts/binary/*
The package engine requirement and installer hints now specify Node.js 22.12.0 or newer. The changeset records the minimum and lists standalone binaries and Homebrew as alternatives.
Installation and development guidance install.md, docs-lab/start/installation.md, docs/installation.md, docs/troubleshooting.md, README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, .devcontainer/README.md
Installation and development guidance now specifies Node.js 22.12.0 or newer. Troubleshooting guidance names standalone binaries and Homebrew for those unable to upgrade.
Build, CI, and dependency automation .github/workflows/binaries.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/security.yml, .github/dependabot.yml
Binary, CI, and security workflows use Node.js 22.12.0 instead of 20.19.0. Dependabot may propose semver-major updates for chalk.
Fission-AI/OpenSpec#2137: This PR updates the Node.js minimum in the standalone-first installation flow and its npm fallback guidance.
Fission-AI/OpenSpec#2158: This PR changes the engine minimum and CI baseline that PR #2158’s Vite update references.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ce8ef
The new Node.js requirement would ship as a minor update rather than a major release. Correct the changeset before merging so users can recognize the breaking upgrade.

… the PR watermark to Fission-AI#2161
Both reds (CI / Windows Dev Check and Upstream Check) were the checker
reporting four unreviewed upstream PRs, not a broken checker. The
CHECK_FAILED lines in the dev check log are the deliberate registry-failure
unit test output, and that step exits 0.
Verdicts, with evidence and revisit triggers, are in docs/DECISIONS.md
(2026-10-28): Fission-AI#2158 skip (vite 7.3.7 is not in the advisory range, audit
clean), Fission-AI#2159 defer (Node 20 floor is a maintainer decision; no runtime
dependency needs Node 22), Fission-AI#2160 and Fission-AI#2161 not applicable (standalone
installer and the openspec.dev router are not in this fork).
The already-adopted Fission-AI#2131, Fission-AI#2133 and Fission-AI#2127 moved their heads upstream
(fast-forward, tests plus a CRLF regex fix). The fork implementation already
satisfies them, so only the new boundary tests are added to pin it.
Watermarks: reviewed_pr_through 2154 -> 2161; commit and issue unchanged.

One user-facing claim needs correction before approval. The changeset and troubleshooting text say the standalone binary and Homebrew “neither needs Node.” The standalone binary is Node-free, but the current Homebrew formula declares a node dependency (brew info --json=v2 openspec). Homebrew manages that dependency, so users do not need to manage Node themselves, but Homebrew still installs and uses Node. Please make that distinction in both places.
The Node 22 floor, CI updates, and fallback strategy otherwise look coherent and the matrix is green. Because this changes docs-lab, the corrected head also needs final review from @TabishB.
The changeset and troubleshooting page said the standalone binary and
Homebrew "neither needs Node". The Homebrew formula depends on `node`,
so only the standalone binary is Node-free; Homebrew installs and
manages a current Node.js as a dependency.

The package is at 1.15.0, so this minor changeset makes the stable release 1.16.0. The release workflow uses the calculated Changesets version for npm publishing, and the repository guide requires major for breaking changes. The beta workflow also derives its base version from the pending changesets.
