docs(install): simplify the install page and ship archives - #2160
Status: Ready for review. Merge after Fission-AI/openspec-landing#16, which adds the openspec.dev/cli/install.sh redirect.
Why: The install page was too long for a first step, and release files were bare binaries.
What:
The docs-lab install page shows just two commands: curl -fsSL https://openspec.dev/cli/install.sh | sh and irm https://openspec.dev/cli/install.ps1 | iex.
Extra details move to a short "Install options" section. docs/ is unchanged.
Releases attach .tar.gz files (.zip on Windows). The installers unpack them and still install v1.15.0.
Proof:
Installer tests pass (17), including a new one for older releases.
Installed a locally built archive end to end, and the real v1.15.0 release.
Windows is checked by the Binaries CI run on this PR.
Linux and macOS releases now provide .tar.gz archives, while Windows releases provide .zip archives. Installers support these archives and can fall back to bare binaries.
Installation instructions now use the hosted shell and PowerShell installers, with guidance for manual downloads and PATH setup.
Bug Fixes
Installers verify archive checksums before extracting and installing binaries.
- Install docs: just the two commands, using openspec.dev URLs. Details
move to a short "Install options" section.
- Releases attach .tar.gz archives (.zip on Windows) instead of bare
binaries. The installers unpack them and still install older releases
that only have bare binaries.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The release workflow now publishes checksummed platform archives. The shell and PowerShell installers support archive downloads and retain bare-binary fallback behavior. Installation commands and documentation now use the openspec.dev installer endpoints and describe archive installation.

Summary
Release archive packaging and contract .github/workflows/binaries.yml, .agents/skills/release-openspec/SKILL.md, .changeset/install-archives.md, scripts/README.md
The workflow packages Windows binaries as .zip files and other platform binaries as .tar.gz files, includes LICENSE, and generates checksums for the archives. Release uploads and attestation targets use the archives. The release guidance and changeset describe the archive formats.
Archive selection, verification, and extraction scripts/binary/install.sh, scripts/binary/install.ps1, test/binary-installer.test.ts
Both installers select and verify archives when available, with fallback to bare binaries. They extract the executable from downloaded archives. Tests cover archive fixtures and bare-binary installation.
Installation commands and options README.md, install.md, docs-lab/reference/cli.md, docs-lab/start/installation.md
Installation commands use the openspec.dev endpoints. The installation guide documents version and directory settings, manual archive installation, platform archive formats, and optional attestation verification.
Fission-AI/OpenSpec#2137: This PR modifies the standalone binary workflow, installers, checksums, and installation documentation introduced by that PR.

The installer URLs may be unavailable until the separate redirect change lands, and manual installation can fail or leave macOS quarantine unchanged because of the documented path errors.

Deploy the /cli/install.ps1 route before merging the Windows command.
The README now points Windows users to https://openspec.dev/cli/install.ps1. That URL returned HTTP 404 when checked. The PR description names only the openspec.dev/cli/install.sh redirect as a prerequisite, so nothing in the PR establishes that the PowerShell route will exist at merge. If it stays absent, the Windows Quick Start command in README.md fails. Confirm that /cli/install.ps1 serves the intended script before this change merges. Keep the GitHub-hosted PowerShell command until the route is live.

Handle incomplete latest releases.
The manual instructions point to /releases/latest, but the release workflow publishes the release before uploading the archives and uploads SHA256SUMS last. During that interval, the latest release can exist without the files listed below. Link to a release with attached archives or tell users to retry or select an earlier complete release. Use a Windows-specific destination example.
~/.local/bin is a POSIX path. Windows users can place openspec.exe in a directory that is not on PATH. State a Windows example, such as %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\openspec, and tell users to add that directory to PATH when needed. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Run xattr on the installed executable.
Step 3 moves openspec out of the extraction directory. This command then targets a different file or fails, leaving the installed macOS executable quarantined. Use the destination path, or run this step before moving the file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

… the PR watermark to Fission-AI#2161
Both reds (CI / Windows Dev Check and Upstream Check) were the checker
reporting four unreviewed upstream PRs, not a broken checker. The
CHECK_FAILED lines in the dev check log are the deliberate registry-failure
unit test output, and that step exits 0.
Verdicts, with evidence and revisit triggers, are in docs/DECISIONS.md
(2026-10-28): Fission-AI#2158 skip (vite 7.3.7 is not in the advisory range, audit
clean), Fission-AI#2159 defer (Node 20 floor is a maintainer decision; no runtime
dependency needs Node 22), Fission-AI#2160 and Fission-AI#2161 not applicable (standalone
installer and the openspec.dev router are not in this fork).
The already-adopted Fission-AI#2131, Fission-AI#2133 and Fission-AI#2127 moved their heads upstream
(fast-forward, tests plus a CRLF regex fix). The fork implementation already
satisfies them, so only the new boundary tests are added to pin it.
Watermarks: reviewed_pr_through 2154 -> 2161; commit and issue unchanged.
