feat(security): support Restricted game pods and per-server diagnostic opt-in - #764
Restricted admission currently rejects the game workload's security settings and the packet-capture exception. This change renders an opt-in Restricted workload profile and projects rotating Kubernetes credentials only into the agent container.
Capture uses a separate, short-lived node worker when an administrator explicitly opts that server in. Both the installation and server opt-ins default off. The action is audited before granting access, requires administrator scope on the selected cluster, and cannot be inherited by cloning or enabled through generic server edits. Starting capture does not restart or inject a container into the game Pod.
The worker pins the GameServer, Pod and containerd identities, has bounded duration/storage and no Kubernetes token, hostPath or runtime socket. Its hostPID and SYS_ADMIN/SYS_PTRACE/NET_RAW capabilities still require node-level trust. Support is Linux/containerd with standard cgroup paths and eth0. Retained artifacts are served by a separate unprivileged Pod over mTLS; revocation, TTL, direct capture deletion and GameServer deletion drain workers and clean up cross-namespace resources.
Validation: production operator/API/capture builds and changed regression-source compilation passed; actionlint and offline zizmor passed. Tests were not executed locally under repository policy. CI adds real Restricted admission, compatible/incompatible template behavior, persisted data across profile upgrade, projected-token rotation, capture/download without game restart, revocation and garbage collection on amd64/arm64. Runtime guarantees remain subject to those CI results.
Integration: preserve #757's namespace-scoped Secret cache/RBAC and #756's snapshot-source authorization when resolving the overlapping operator/API files. The diagnostics Secret reads use the uncached reader and a diagnostics-only Role.
Added an opt-in node-based network capture workflow for restricted workloads, with administrator-controlled access, capture downloads, and cleanup.
Added a Restricted security profile for game workloads, including safer credential handling and rotating agent tokens.
Added configuration options for node diagnostics, token lifetime, and Pod Security version.
Bug Fixes
Improved recovery from connection refusals during API login without retrying unrelated request failures.
Tests
Expanded automated coverage for restricted workloads, token rotation, node captures, and supported architectures.
Documentation
Updated installation and security guidance for restricted workloads and node diagnostics.
Restricted workload upgrades now preserve shared-group access to root-created configuration files. Unsupported Hostport exposure is rejected before template admission or rollout. Generic server edits preserve an omitted administrator capture opt-in; explicit changes still require the dedicated administrator action. Diagnostics defaults also work when upgrading older releases with reused values.
This pull request adds an opt-in Restricted workload profile with projected agent credentials and a separate node-based network capture path. It adds administrator controls, chart resources, capture lifecycle handling, documentation, and CI coverage. The E2E login client also gains a one-time retry for a typed connection-refused dial error.
Restricted mode validates template identities and HostPort use, applies security contexts, disables automatic service-account token mounting, and projects credentials only to the agent. Config-init checks group ownership and permissions.
The chart can create a privileged diagnostics namespace with quotas, scoped RBAC, and network policies. It validates configuration and passes diagnostics and workload settings to the operator. CRD bundle checksums are updated.
Node capture worker and artifact endpoints capture-sidecar/*
The image adds a separate capture tool and artifact-only HTTP routes. The worker validates target identity, captures bounded packet data, monitors identity during capture, and publishes result metadata and artifacts.
Node capture reconciliation and cleanup operator/internal/controller/networkcapture*, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_controller.go
The operator selects the node capture path, binds it to a target Pod and container, provisions worker and artifact resources, tracks completion, and drains workers during cleanup.
Administrator controls and capture routing api/internal/handlers/*capture*, api/internal/kube/capture*, api/internal/gateway/capture.go, api/internal/rbac/rbac.go
Dedicated endpoints gate diagnostic opt-in and opt-out with administrator authorization and auditing. Generic edits and clones cannot grant the setting. Node capture requests use derived service identities and the node artifact download proxy.
Restricted workload and capture validation test/e2e/*, hack/*, .github/workflows/ci.yaml, charts/tests/check_workload_security.py
The E2E drill checks admission, token rotation, capture lifecycle, and cleanup. CI selects the drill on amd64 and arm64 and runs chart checks.
Initial login can reopen its port-forward and retry once after a typed dial ECONNREFUSED, within the existing seven-attempt limit. Other errors do not trigger reconnection.
A user-stopped node capture can be marked Failed by a transient artifact-service error even though the capture file exists, and the retry used on the normal completion path is skipped. The new CI job timeout also needs a one-line justification comment. Both are small, bounded fixes, and the rest of the change looks sound.

The title clearly summarizes the main changes: Restricted game pod support and per-server diagnostic opt-in.
Docstring Coverage
Docstring coverage is inconclusive: files from earlier reviews still need to be rechecked within the check's analysis limits. Not blocking.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #714 remains open and requires Restricted security checks for regular, init, and optional ephemeral containers. applyWorkloadSecurity applies Restricted settings to the game and init containers but does not inspect or modify PodSpec.EphemeralContainers. TestWorkloadTokenOnlyMountedInAgent also checks only regular and init containers. The summary reports shared-PID coverage and token rotation, but it does not close this container-coverage gap.
Resolution
Apply and validate the Restricted security context for every optional ephemeral container, or reject an incompatible ephemeral-container configuration before admission. Extend the regression tests to cover those containers and verify the selected ShareProcessNamespace behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The added test/e2e/api_login_transport_e2e_test.go and its api-auth bucket registration test connection-refusal classification and generic API reconnect behavior. These changes do not implement Restricted workload admission, agent credential isolation, or diagnostic capture from issue #714. The current PR description does not identify this separate login-transport objective.
Resolution
Remove the standalone login-transport test and bucket changes, or move them to a pull request with a linked login-transport requirement. Retain a generic reconnect-helper change only if the Restricted E2E test needs it and document that connection.

Document why this test does not call t.Parallel(), and record the exception in test/e2e/specs.md.
The test does not call t.Parallel(). A serial run is justified here because the test runs helmUpgradeReuse on the shared release and has a dedicated bucket with parallel: 1. The comment at Line 24 does not state this. test/e2e/specs.md lists only ratelimit and gateway parity as documented exceptions (conventions, t.Parallel() bullet), so a reviewer will read this test as a violation.
Add one sentence to the doc comment. Add restricted-workloads to the exception list in test/e2e/specs.md.

The G204 concern is refuted. .golangci.yml excludes gosec for all _test.go files, including test/e2e/restricted_workloads_e2e_test.go. The narrower env.go exclusion does not limit the broader test-file exclusion.
The gateway is not isolated by gameplane-gateway-diagnostics. charts/gameplane/templates/gateway.yaml renders a dedicated gateway NetworkPolicy outside .Values.networkPolicies.enabled, and its egress rules retain DNS and kube-apiserver access. NetworkPolicies are additive, so the diagnostics policy adds artifact access rather than replacing the gateway policy.
CaptureClient.GetCaptureStatus uses GET /captures/{id}/status, sends both required identity headers, and decodes the response’s status field. The proposed 404 and empty-phase failures are not supported by the inspected code.
Hey, thanks for this one. The 409 retry fix in the e2e is welcome too.
One hardening change I'd like before merge: operator/internal/controller/networkcapture_node.go:43 decides a capture is a node capture just because the diagnostics-namespace annotation is set, and it trusts whatever namespace is in that annotation. The PSA-privileged and separation checks only run on the first bind (:412-428), so a NetworkCapture created with the annotation already filled in skips them, and nothing compares the value with the configured diagnostics namespace. It needs kube write access on NetworkCaptures to abuse, but it's still a guard that can be bypassed. Could you check on every reconcile that the annotation equals r.DiagnosticsNamespace (and fail the capture if not), and re-run the PSA/separation checks instead of only on first bind?
Optional, on the config-init test: the new runtime test is great. If you have a minute, it would be nice to also assert the '/data/'"$p" quoting and that stat -c %g comes before chgrp in the script, since the Contains checks pass whenever stat appears anywhere.
Node captures now recheck that the recorded namespace matches the configured diagnostics namespace, stays separate from games/control plane, and still explicitly permits privileged PSA. Invalid active captures drain workers before failing. Retained/deleting captures preserve cleanup, while revoked namespaces receive no certificate rotation. A prefilled namespace also no longer skips target binding and finalization. Added regressions for forged namespaces, PSA revocation, worker drain and retention, plus the config-init quoting/order assertions and a spaced-filename runtime case. Operator and regression sources compile locally; runtime checks remain CI-only.
The failed operator E2E rerun stopped before tests started because its one-day image artifact (e2e-images-amd64) had expired. af0e29f7 resolves the upstream conflicts and starts fresh CI so the image artifacts are rebuilt. The merge preserves the Restricted init-container security context together with upstream's resource settings. Production/regression-source compilation and the required workflow static checks passed.

Retry artifact status after a stopped worker drains.
ensureNodeArtifacts creates the artifact Pod and Service before the worker, but it does not wait for the artifact Pod to become ready. A stopped worker can therefore drain while the artifact Service still returns a transient connection or 5xx error. finishNodeCapture currently marks the capture Failed on that first error.
Record nodeCaptureFinishedAnnotation after the stop drain completes and apply the existing bounded retry before failing the capture.

Review comment at @operator/internal/controller/networkcapture_node.go around
lines 547 - 551:
In the stopped-worker drain flow, record and persist
nodeCaptureFinishedAnnotation once the drain completes before calling
finishNodeCapture. In finishNodeCapture, let GetCaptureStatus errors use the
existing bounded retry window before failing a stopped capture; retain the
stopped-specific failure once that window expires.

Closes #714.
