Closes #2611

PR Type

  • Bug fix

Summary

  • On native Windows, /gentle:music and its subcommands now say "/gentle:music is not available on Windows yet: the gentle-stream player runs on macOS and Linux. It works when Gentle Shell runs inside WSL." and never offer, install or run the player.
  • macOS, Linux and WSL behavior is unchanged.
  • Docs state that native Windows is not supported yet.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that music playback is supported on macOS and Linux, including WSL, and is unavailable on native Windows.
    • Updated installation guidance for the bundled player, including its location and supported platforms.
    • Documented optional, consent-based player installation for Gentle Shell when no player is available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • On native Windows, the music command now reports that playback is unavailable without attempting installation or playback.

…ead of offering a player that cannot run

gentle-stream needs POSIX (fcntl locks, an AF_UNIX control socket, process
groups), so on native Windows the 4.5.0 offer downloaded uv, Python and the
player only to fail at startup. The command and its subcommands now explain
that Windows is not supported yet and that WSL works, and never offer,
install or run anything there.

Walkthrough

The /gentle:music handler now detects native Windows, displays an unavailable message, and stops before player discovery, installation, or execution. Tests cover TUI, mood, and control inputs. Documentation describes support on macOS, Linux, and WSL.

Changes: Music platform support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native Windows guard and platform documentation
extensions/gentle-music.ts, tests/gentle-music.test.ts, docs/gentle-music.md, docs/gentle-shell.md
The handler uses the host platform by default and accepts a platform override. On native Windows, it displays an unavailable message and returns before player discovery, installation, or command execution. Tests cover TUI, mood, and control inputs. Documentation limits bundled-player installation to macOS and Linux and notes WSL support.

Explanation

Issue #2611 requires that on native Windows, /gentle:music explains that the player is unavailable, says it works inside WSL, and never offers, installs, or runs anything. At the reviewed head, extensions/gentle-music.ts defines MUSIC_WINDOWS_UNSUPPORTED with that text. The registered command handler checks platform === "win32" after the hasUI check and before the mode check, the player lookup (findPlayer), the bundled install offer (offerInstall, which calls ctx.ui.confirm), and any spawn. On that path it calls ctx.ui.notify(MUSIC_WINDOWS_UNSUPPORTED, "warning") and returns. Because the guard sits at the top of the single handler, it also precedes the control-word branches (next, pause, play, stop, status). The platform value comes from deps.platform, defaulting to process.platform. Non-Windows paths keep the existing flow. Limits: the incremental diff from the previous reviewed head (64c44d7) and the test file diff could not be read in this review because the changed blobs were unavailable. The Windows tests (notice only, no confirm, install, or spawn for open, mood, status, and stop) are supported by the prior assessment and the PR report (84 pass, 0 fail; typecheck 0 diagnostics). This review did not re-run them. The source guard alone establishes the required behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The source change is one guard, one exported notice constant, and one optional deps field (platform). The platform field exists only to make the Windows path testable, which supports the tests for issue #2611. The documentation edits in docs/gentle-music.md and docs/gentle-shell.md describe the same native Windows limit, the WSL path, and the macOS and Linux bundled install scope. Supporting documentation for the changed behavior is within scope. No unrelated behavior change is identified in the readable source at head. The test file and incremental diff were unavailable, so test-only changes were not inspected directly in this review.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Set the platform in supported-platform tests.

On native Windows, this test now receives MUSIC_WINDOWS_UNSUPPORTED instead of the installation hint. Other tests that expect a spawn or installation also omit platform and fail. This breaks the music test suite and pnpm test on Windows. Set a supported platform in those tests while retaining the explicit win32 test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…nd pin the test platform

On native Windows a non-TUI context got the interactive-terminal notice
instead of the not-available one. The music tests now describe a POSIX host
unless they pass a platform, so they hold when the suite runs on Windows.

Model JSON and print contexts with hasUI set to false.

fakeContext sets hasUI: true for every mode. Pi reports hasUI as false in print and JSON modes. The handler checks ctx.hasUI first and returns at line 334, before the Windows notice. These modes therefore receive no Windows notice at runtime. The test at lines 438-440 asserts a notice for a context these modes never produce, so the real headless path is not tested.

Pass hasUI: false for JSON and print, and assert the silent behavior. Keep hasUI: true for RPC, because RPC has a UI and receives the notice.

Thanks for the review.

  • The notice order is fixed in 304f6fe: the Windows check now runs before the terminal-mode check, and a test pins it.
  • On the JSON/print modeling: in those modes Pi sets hasUI to false, so the handler returns silently before either notice, which is unchanged by this PR. The new test only pins which notice wins for a UI-capable context outside the TUI, so I'm leaving it as is for this hotfix.
