fix(installer): download the Gentle AI release through the configured proxy - #2614
npm install gentle-pi fails on a network whose only route to the internet is an HTTP proxy. npm resolves the proxy correctly (from proxy/https-proxy in .npmrc), so the package tarball downloads fine, but the package-local Gentle AI binary is downloaded by scripts/gentle-ai-installer.mjs with node:https, whose client ignores HTTPS_PROXY, HTTP_PROXY and NO_PROXY unless the process opts in. Node only grew that opt-in in v24 (NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY / --use-env-proxy), and this package supports node >= 22.19.0, so there was no way in.
The failure is a bare ECONNREFUSED that names the release CDN's IP address and no proxy:
npm error gentle-pi could not install its package-local Gentle AI v4.1.1 binary: connect ECONNREFUSED <ip>:443 (code ECONNREFUSED)
The change
scripts/gentle-ai-proxy.mjs (new) resolves the proxy from the environment the way every other HTTP client does: HTTPS_PROXY for an https target, HTTP_PROXY as the fallback, and NO_PROXY always winning over both. Both spellings are read, because shells and CI runners disagree about the convention.
The download opens a CONNECT tunnel to that proxy and speaks TLS to the origin host through it. The origin's own certificate still decides whether the connection is trusted, and the proxy never sees the request. No new dependency.
The proxy is resolved per URL rather than once per download, because a redirect may land on a host that NO_PROXY exempts.
A proxy that refuses the tunnel fails with the status it returned instead of a bare socket error, and one that is briefly overloaded is retried under the downloader's existing transient-failure rule.
An unusable proxy value is ignored, so a stray variable cannot break an install that would otherwise reach the host directly.
Review feedback addressed
The review found four defects in the first version of this change. Each was reproduced against the original code before it was fixed, and each fix is covered by a test that fails without it.
The download could hang forever.https.Agent.createConnection withholds the socket from the request until the tunnel is established, so the request's own header timeout never bounded the CONNECT phase. A proxy that accepted the connection and stayed silent, or that closed it before the header block arrived, left the download pending forever. The handshake is now bounded inside the agent by the same deadline, and an early close fails fast with a retryable code.
Malformed proxy credentials crashed the install. The credentials are percent-decoded when the Proxy-Authorization header is built, and a malformed value threw an uncaught URIError that ended the install with a stack trace, skipping the retry and the mirror fallback. They are now validated while the proxy is parsed, so an unusable proxy is ignored like any other unusable value.
A proxy on an IP address did not work.URL.hostname keeps the brackets of an IPv6 literal, and a socket address does not accept them. Separately, an IP cannot be a TLS server name, and a modern Node refuses the handshake outright with ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, which escaped the tunnel as an uncaught exception. The brackets come off before the connection, the address goes in as the host, and the server name is only sent for a hostname.
The origin client credentials reached the proxy. The client credentials are the identity of the origin, so they now stay on the origin handshake; the proxy gets the certificate authority and the verification setting, which it needs to be trusted, and the client credentials are never offered to it.
The same identity rule applies to both peers. Node resolves the name a certificate is checked against as servername || host || socket._host || "localhost", and socket._host is null on a modern Node, so the host is what makes an address work on either side.
Verification
tests/gentle-ai-proxy.test.ts covers the environment resolution, NO_PROXY, the tunnel handshake against a local proxy, the refusal and transient statuses, that a proxied download carries a tunnel while a direct one does not, that a proxy reached over TLS is spoken to over TLS, that the identity of the peer is checked against the right name on both sides, that the proxy does not receive the origin client credentials, and that a redirect resolves the proxy for its destination.
End to end against a real TLS origin and a real CONNECT proxy, not mocks: a direct download, a proxied download, a proxied download that follows a redirect, a NO_PROXY exemption that reaches the proxy zero times, a dead proxy port, a silent proxy, a proxy that closes the socket, an IPv6-only proxy, malformed credentials, a transient status that opens a second connection, an IP-literal proxy, a hostname proxy whose SNI is observed at the proxy, and a certificate for a different name that is rejected with ERR_TLS_CERT_ALTNAME_INVALID. All thirteen pass, with no uncaught exception in any failure mode.
The type diagnostic ratchet reports no new diagnostics.
End to end on a proxy-only network, with no NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY set: node scripts/install-gentle-ai.mjs installs Gentle AI v4.3.1, and the installed binary's SHA-256 matches the pinned GENTLE_AI_RELEASE_ASSETS digest.
One caveat on the suite, so it is not mistaken for a regression: node scripts/run-test-suite.mjs fails 19 tests in tests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.ts in some environments. Those failures are pre-existing and unrelated to this change. They are the Bootstrap: Unsafe tooling ownership assertion, and scripts/bootstrap.sh refuses to run when the tools directory ownership does not match the current user, which a sandboxed or containerised filesystem does not satisfy. The same 19 fail on the merge base with these files reverted. The provider-contract and runtime-harness stages pass.
Notes for the reviewer
downloadGentleAiAsset takes an env option so the resolution is testable without touching the process environment; the production path reads process.env.
The trust options in downloadGentleAiAsset reach both peers, the proxy and the origin. An explicit ca replaces Node's default certificate authority list rather than adding to it, so a list meant for one peer rejects a publicly trusted certificate on the other. The production installer passes no trust options today; the option exists for a caller that needs one.
scripts/installer-downloads.mjs has the same limitation for the bundled install's artifacts, because it downloads them with fetch, which ignores the same variables on the same terms. This change does not touch it, so the two downloaders now differ. It may deserve its own issue.
The tunnel is a plain CONNECT over the proxy's own TCP (or TLS) connection. It does not implement proxy-side caching, retry-after hints, or PAC files; those are out of scope for an installer that fetches one pinned, digest-verified asset.
tests/fixtures/proxy-tls/proxy.crt and proxy.key are a self-signed certificate with a long expiry, used only by the local test suite. It covers DNS:proxy.test, IP:127.0.0.1 and IP:::1.
… proxy
npm already honours HTTPS_PROXY, HTTP_PROXY and NO_PROXY, so an operator whose
only route to the internet is a corporate proxy could install the package but
not the binary it installs: the release asset was fetched with node:https,
whose client ignores those variables unless the process opts in, and Node only
grew that opt-in in v24 while this package supports node >= 22.19.0. Every
install behind a proxy failed with a bare ECONNREFUSED that named no proxy.
The download now resolves the proxy from the environment the way every other
HTTP client does and opens a CONNECT tunnel to it, so the origin's own
certificate still decides whether the connection is trusted and the proxy
never sees the request. The proxy is resolved per URL, because a redirect may
land on a host that NO_PROXY exempts, and a proxy that is briefly overloaded
is retried under the downloader's existing transient-failure rule.

Walkthrough
The installer now resolves proxy settings for each HTTPS download URL, including URLs reached after redirects. A new helper resolves proxy environment variables and creates HTTP or HTTPS proxy tunnels. Tests cover proxy selection, CONNECT responses, retries, and HTTPS proxy connections.
Proxy resolution checks NO_PROXY, protocol-specific proxy variables, and HTTP proxy variables as a fallback for HTTPS targets. Tests cover variable casing, URL formats, and exclusion matching.
Create and test proxy tunnels scripts/gentle-ai-proxy.mjs, tests/gentle-ai-proxy.test.ts
The tunnel agent supports HTTP and HTTPS proxies, optional Basic credentials, and origin TLS. Tests cover CONNECT requests, refusal errors, transient 503 retries, and TLS connections to HTTPS proxies.
Connect the downloader to proxy resolution scripts/gentle-ai-installer.mjs, tests/gentle-ai-proxy.test.ts
The downloader resolves proxy settings for each HTTPS URL and uses a tunnel agent when a proxy applies. Tests check agent selection for direct and proxied downloads.

URL.hostname keeps the brackets of an IPv6 literal, so a proxy configured as
http://[::1]:3128 reached the tunnel with the brackets still attached. A
socket address does not accept them, and the lookup failed with ENOTFOUND
before the tunnel was ever opened.
The brackets come off before the proxy connection and before the TLS server
name. The bare address stays the server name because dropping it would turn
off the certificate identity check.

… IPv6 tests
A proxy on an IP address was handed to the TLS handshake as the server
name. An IP cannot be a server name, and a modern Node refuses the
handshake outright with ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, so the exception escaped the
tunnel and ended the install. The server name is left out for an IP, and
the identity check still runs, because Node falls back to the host of the
socket the tunnel is built on.
The IPv6 test binds a loopback address, which a host without IPv6 cannot
provide. It now skips on that one error and still fails for every other
one, so the suite stays green on an IPv4-only machine.

Leaving the server name out was not enough for a proxy on an IP address.
Node resolves the name a certificate is checked against as the server name,
then the host, then the socket address, and finally the literal
"localhost". With the server name left out and no host given, the
certificate of a proxy on 127.0.0.1 was therefore checked against
"localhost" and rejected.
The address now goes in as the host, which is the name the certificate is
verified against, and no server name is sent, so a modern Node still
accepts the handshake. A hostname keeps its server name and is unaffected.
When proxy settings exist only in .npmrc, npm exposes them as npm_config_https_proxy, npm_config_proxy, and npm_config_noproxy. The resolver ignores these variables, so a clean install on a proxy-only network can fail to download Gentle AI.
The entrypoint catches the error, but it sets process.exitCode = 1. Therefore, npm reports the postinstall failure, and the failed installation leaves no package-local Gentle AI binary.

Pass the origin host to the tunneled TLS connection.
For an IP-literal redirect through an HTTP proxy, servername is empty and host is omitted. Node then checks the certificate against the proxy socket's host, or localhost, instead of the origin IP. The proxy host is now always the name the certificate is checked against.
Node leaves the socket host unset and would otherwise fall back to
"localhost", so a proxy on an address had its certificate checked against
the wrong name. The server name is still only sent for a hostname, because
an address cannot be one and a modern Node refuses the handshake outright
when it is given one.
The trust options reach the handshake as well, on both the proxy
connection and the origin connection, so a caller that trusts a private
certificate authority reaches a proxy that presents one. The options were
accepted and dropped before, so they had no effect at all.
The new test runs the tunnel against a real TLS proxy with a certificate
that covers the proxy address, and checks that the handshake completes,
that the CONNECT request reaches the proxy and that no server name was
sent. It fails when the tunnel stops applying the host, which the
assertion on the helper alone could not catch.
The proxy host is now always the name the certificate is checked against, and the server name is only sent for a hostname. The previous commit set the host only for an address, which left the certificate of a proxy on a hostname checked against the name, and this one sets it in both cases so the contract does not depend on the fallback Node happens to use.
The trust options reach the handshake on both the proxy connection and the origin connection. They were accepted and dropped before, so a caller that trusted a private certificate authority never reached a proxy that presented one. The new test needs that to run the tunnel against a real TLS proxy.

The certificate is a fixture under tests/fixtures/proxy-tls/ and covers DNS:proxy.test, IP:127.0.0.1 and IP:::1. It is a self-signed test certificate, not a secret.

…shake
The client credentials are the identity of the origin, so they belong on
the origin handshake. The proxy handshake received them too, and a proxy
that asks for a client certificate was handed the identity of the origin.
The proxy now gets the certificate authority and the verification setting,
which it needs to be trusted, and the client credentials stay on the
origin handshake. The proxy handshake also reads the trust options from
the caller, which it did not before, so a private certificate authority
is now actually honoured there.
Added a test that runs a real TLS proxy asking for a client certificate
and checks that it receives none. It fails against the previous form.
Added a test that a redirect resolves the proxy for its destination, so a
destination exempt from the proxy is not sent through it.
Commit fe6a0f73b addresses both findings from the last pass.
The client credentials no longer reach the proxy handshake. The proxy gets the certificate authority and the verification setting, which it needs to be trusted, and the client credentials stay on the origin handshake. Confirmed with a TLS proxy that requests a client certificate: before, the proxy received the origin identity; now it receives none.
That change also fixed a second defect it exposed: the proxy handshake was reading the trust options from the agent's per-connection options instead of from the caller, so a private certificate authority was never honoured on the proxy connection.
Added a redirect resolves the proxy for its destination. The test was checked against the mutation that carries the first agent forward to every hop, which is the regression that would send an exempt destination through the proxy, and it fails against it.

The current test uses a certificate valid for 127.0.0.1 and passes it as a trusted CA. A regression that disables origin identity verification, or accepts a trusted certificate for another origin name, would still pass. Add a focused handshake test with a trusted certificate whose SAN excludes the requested origin and assert that the download rejects the TLS handshake.

The trust options reach both peers of the connection, the proxy and the
origin. An explicit certificate authority replaces Node's default list
rather than adding to it, so a list meant for one peer rejects a publicly
trusted certificate on the other. The client credentials are used for the
origin only and are never offered to the proxy.
The behaviour was already in place; this states it where a caller reads
it.
Commit d31b36734 documents the shared certificate authority semantics on downloadGentleAiAsset and on both trust helpers, next to the code a caller reads.
The behaviour was already in place after fe6a0f73b; this states it, and the wording was checked against the actual behaviour:
no ca (Node default list) -> UNABLE_TO_VERIFY_LEAF_SIGNATURE
ca = the CA that signed it -> authorized
ca = an unrelated CA only -> UNABLE_TO_VERIFY_LEAF_SIGNATURE
An explicit list replaces Node's default authorities rather than adding to them, so a list meant for one peer rejects a publicly trusted certificate on the other.

The change went through several rounds of review, and the first version had four real defects that are now fixed. Each one was reproduced against the original code before it was fixed, and each fix has a test that fails without it. This is a summary of what to look at; the details are in the individual commits.
The bugs that were found and fixed
The download could hang forever.https.Agent.createConnection withholds the socket from the request until the tunnel is established, so the request's own header timeout never bounded the CONNECT phase. A proxy that accepted the connection and stayed silent, or closed it before the header block arrived, left the download pending forever. Reproduced against the original code: pending past 5s. Now bounded inside the agent by the same deadline, with an early close failing fast with a retryable code.
Malformed proxy credentials crashed the install. The credentials are percent-decoded when the Proxy-Authorization header is built; a malformed value threw an uncaught URIError that ended the install with a stack trace, skipping the retry and the mirror fallback. Reproduced against the original code with a reachable proxy: UNCAUGHT EXCEPTION: URIError: URI malformed. Now validated while the proxy is parsed.
A proxy on an IP address did not work.URL.hostname keeps the brackets of an IPv6 literal, and a socket address does not accept them. Separately, an IP cannot be a TLS server name, and a modern Node refuses the handshake outright with ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, which escaped the tunnel as an uncaught exception and killed the install. A proxy on https://127.0.0.1:3128 is a common corporate configuration, so this was a crash on a realistic setup.
The origin client credentials reached the proxy. They are the identity of the origin, so they now stay on the origin handshake. The proxy gets the certificate authority and the verification setting, which it needs to be trusted, and the client credentials are never offered to it. Reproduced against the previous version: the proxy received the origin identity; it no longer does.
Where the identity of a peer is decided
Node resolves the name a certificate is checked against as servername || host || socket._host || "localhost", and socket._host is null on a modern Node. So the host is what makes an address work, on both the proxy side and the origin side, and the server name is only sent for a hostname. Omitting the server name does not weaken the check: a certificate issued for a different name is still rejected with ERR_TLS_CERT_ALTNAME_INVALID.
Verification
18 tests in tests/gentle-ai-proxy.test.ts, 75 across the proxy and installer suites, 0 new type diagnostics.
End to end against a real TLS origin and a real CONNECT proxy, not mocks: 13 scenarios, all passing, including the IPv6-only proxy, the IP-literal proxy, a hostname proxy whose SNI is observed at the proxy, and a certificate for a different name that is rejected. No uncaught exception in any failure mode.
The suite caveat is in the PR body: 19 tests in tests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.ts fail in some environments. They are pre-existing and unrelated. I confirmed the same 19 fail on the merge base e8b281493 with a clean worktree, so the change is not what breaks them.
Two things that need a maintainer
The CI and Windows workflows report action_required with no jobs run, which is the fork approval gate rather than a test result. They need an approval to run.
This PR could not be labelled from a fork, so type:bug and priority:high still need to be added.
Still open, deliberately
scripts/installer-downloads.mjs downloads the bundled install's artifacts with fetch, which ignores the same proxy variables on the same terms. This change does not touch it, so the two downloaders now behave differently. It may deserve its own issue rather than widening this one.

Problem
npm install gentle-pifails on a network whose only route to the internet is an HTTP proxy. npm resolves the proxy correctly (fromproxy/https-proxyin.npmrc), so the package tarball downloads fine, but the package-local Gentle AI binary is downloaded byscripts/gentle-ai-installer.mjswithnode:https, whose client ignoresHTTPS_PROXY,HTTP_PROXYandNO_PROXYunless the process opts in. Node only grew that opt-in in v24 (NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY/--use-env-proxy), and this package supports node >= 22.19.0, so there was no way in.The failure is a bare

The review found four defects in the first version of this change. Each was reproduced against the original code before it was fixed, and each fix is covered by a test that fails without it.
https.Agent.createConnectionwithholds the socket from the request until the tunnel is established, so the request's own header timeout never bounded the CONNECT phase. A proxy that accepted the connection and stayed silent, or that closed it before the header block arrived, left the download pending forever. The handshake is now bounded inside the agent by the same deadline, and an early close fails fast with a retryable code.Proxy-Authorizationheader is built, and a malformed value threw an uncaughtURIErrorthat ended the install with a stack trace, skipping the retry and the mirror fallback. They are now validated while the proxy is parsed, so an unusable proxy is ignored like any other unusable value.URL.hostnamekeeps the brackets of an IPv6 literal, and a socket address does not accept them. Separately, an IP cannot be a TLS server name, and a modern Node refuses the handshake outright withERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, which escaped the tunnel as an uncaught exception. The brackets come off before the connection, the address goes in as the host, and the server name is only sent for a hostname. The same identity rule applies to both peers. Node resolves the name a certificate is checked against as
servername || host || socket._host || "localhost", andsocket._hostis null on a modern Node, so the host is what makes an address work on either side.Verification
tests/gentle-ai-proxy.test.tscovers the environment resolution,NO_PROXY, the tunnel handshake against a local proxy, the refusal and transient statuses, that a proxied download carries a tunnel while a direct one does not, that a proxy reached over TLS is spoken to over TLS, that the identity of the peer is checked against the right name on both sides, that the proxy does not receive the origin client credentials, and that a redirect resolves the proxy for its destination.NO_PROXYexemption that reaches the proxy zero times, a dead proxy port, a silent proxy, a proxy that closes the socket, an IPv6-only proxy, malformed credentials, a transient status that opens a second connection, an IP-literal proxy, a hostname proxy whose SNI is observed at the proxy, and a certificate for a different name that is rejected withERR_TLS_CERT_ALTNAME_INVALID. All thirteen pass, with no uncaught exception in any failure mode.NODE_USE_ENV_PROXYset:node scripts/install-gentle-ai.mjsinstalls Gentle AI v4.3.1, and the installed binary's SHA-256 matches the pinnedGENTLE_AI_RELEASE_ASSETSdigest.One caveat on the suite, so it is not mistaken for a regression:
node scripts/run-test-suite.mjsfails 19 tests intests/installer-posix-bootstrap.test.tsin some environments. Those failures are pre-existing and unrelated to this change. They are theBootstrap: Unsafe tooling ownershipassertion, andscripts/bootstrap.shrefuses to run when the tools directory ownership does not match the current user, which a sandboxed or containerised filesystem does not satisfy. The same 19 fail on the merge base with these files reverted. Theprovider-contractandruntime-harnessstages pass.Notes for the reviewer
downloadGentleAiAssettakes anenvoption so the resolution is testable without touching the process environment; the production path readsprocess.env.downloadGentleAiAssetreach both peers, the proxy and the origin. An explicitcareplaces Node's default certificate authority list rather than adding to it, so a list meant for one peer rejects a publicly trusted certificate on the other. The production installer passes no trust options today; the option exists for a caller that needs one.scripts/installer-downloads.mjshas the same limitation for the bundled install's artifacts, because it downloads them withfetch, which ignores the same variables on the same terms. This change does not touch it, so the two downloaders now differ. It may deserve its own issue.tests/fixtures/proxy-tls/proxy.crtandproxy.keyare a self-signed certificate with a long expiry, used only by the local test suite.
