[Feature]: Optional named colour palettes in Theme settings (proposal) #569

Closed as not planned

Description

@Blackspirits

What would you like Filee to do?

Would you be open to an optional Colour palette picker in Settings → Theme? It would offer Filee's original colours plus Catppuccin, Nord, Dracula and classic Monokai, using the surface/text/status roles already supported by theme.json.

Why / when would you use it?

It would make those palettes available without editing a JSON file. Filee would remain the default, and choosing a palette would keep the user's accent, Filee Soft/Material You style and other appearance settings.

Ideas for how it could work

I put together examples and captures on my fork. No picker or application changes have been implemented.

  • Catppuccin Latte/Mocha, Nord light/dark, Dracula Alucard/Classic, and classic Monokai in dark mode. Monokai would visibly fall back to Filee in light mode.
  • The user's theme.json would still override the selected palette, without being rewritten.
  • The examples keep the same Filee accent for comparison. They are application-specific mappings, with documented foreground adjustments for contrast.
  • Existing controls keep the limitations of their style; this would not promise a complete reskin.

The examples load through the current parser. Twenty headless rendering/restore cases passed across both styles and modes. The sources, license notices, contrast checks and remaining interaction checks are in the linked notes.

Two previews from the existing app (headless captures)

Nord light, Material You:

Before starting on the picker, would you prefer that approach or keeping these as documented theme.json examples?

    Thanks for the careful proposal and the examples! We'd rather not add named palettes to Settings for now: the accent colour, Material You and theme.json already cover custom looks, and each built-in palette would need its contrast and every page checked again whenever the UI changes. People who want Catppuccin or Nord can use a theme.json; your examples could live as a documented recipe in docs/CUSTOM-THEMES.md if you'd like to send that as a small PR.
