Summary

The OOB teleop hub now always requires a control token. Previously an unset CONTROL_TOKEN disabled authentication, so anyone who could reach the proxy port could read headset state, rewrite the shared stream config, and register as a headset.

What changed

  • check_token() fails closed (no configured token rejects every caller), compares in constant time, and rejects non-string values. WebSocket register goes through it.
  • When CONTROL_TOKEN is unset or empty, the proxy uses a random per-process token. resolve_control_token() is the single source for the hub, the headset URL and the startup banner, which prints a generated token once. It does not modify os.environ.
  • The test hub and the hub's TS/pytest tests authenticate; new tests cover unauthenticated register/config, non-string tokens and the generated token.
  • oob_teleop_control.rst documents that authentication is mandatory and the token is generated if unset.

Validation

  • pytest in tests/python/core/cloudxr: test_oob_teleop_hub.py, test_oob_teleop_env.py, test_oob_teleop_adb.py, test_webclient.py, test_wss_static_client.py
  • jest helpers/controlChannel.test.ts against the real hub
  • SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files
  • test_wss_oob_lifecycle.py and test_service_oob_status.py (need the native build; not run locally)

Known limitations / follow-ups

  • Restricting cross-origin browser access to the hub API and bounding hub frame size are handled in a separate PR.
  • The headset bookmark still delivers the token as controlToken in the URL query, as it already did for a user-set CONTROL_TOKEN, so the hosting server can see it; the docs say to treat bookmarks as secrets. Moving it to the URL fragment is fix(cloudxr): deliver the OOB control token in the URL fragment #1318, stacked on this PR, because it changes client URL handling and reload behavior and needs its own review.
  • A headset URL or script that relied on running the hub without a token must now pass the token (the generated one is printed in the startup banner).

Test plan

  • CI green, including the two suites above

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Control-channel and HTTP requests now require a valid authentication token; requests without one are rejected.
    • If CONTROL_TOKEN is unset or empty, a random session token is generated and displayed at startup for authentication.
    • Startup guidance now explains how to authenticate OOB HTTP requests.

📝 Walkthrough

When CONTROL_TOKEN is unset or empty, the process now generates and caches a URL-safe token. OOB setup, teleoperation URL generation, and the startup banner use the resolved token. The hub rejects requests with missing or invalid tokens and applies token checks to headset registration. Tests and documentation cover token resolution and authentication behavior.

Authentication now fails closed, but default headset launches expose the generated credential in the hosted page URL, and documented quick-start commands fail without credentials. Address both before merging.

Explanation

The title "fix(cloudxr): require a control token on the OOB teleop hub" matches the main change. The PR makes the OOB teleop hub reject requests when no control token is configured, and it generates a per-process token when CONTROL_TOKEN is unset or empty. The changed files cover the hub check, the env resolution helpers, the WebSocket register path, docs, and tests. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the constant-time comparison or the generated-token behavior, which is expected for a title.

The hub treated an unset CONTROL_TOKEN as "authentication disabled", so
anyone who could reach the proxy port could read headset state, rewrite
the shared stream config, and register as a headset.

- check_token() now fails closed and compares in constant time;
WebSocket register goes through it instead of its own variant.
- When CONTROL_TOKEN is unset or empty, the proxy uses a random
per-process token, shared by the hub, headset URL and startup banner
through resolve_control_token(), and prints it once in the banner.
- Tests and the standalone test hub now authenticate; add coverage for
unauthenticated register/config and the generated token.

Add the token to the quick-start commands.

The manual headset URL omits controlToken, so the newly required register token is absent and the headset cannot register. The state, config, and polling curl examples at Lines 110, 146, and 160 also omit X-Control-Token, so they receive 401 responses. Update these examples and the HTTP API examples at Lines 447 and 480 to use the configured or banner-printed token. The hub now always requires a token, so the manual headset URL and the
state/config curl examples failed without one. Add controlToken to the
manual bookmark and X-Control-Token to every hub HTTP example, and note
that the banner redacts the generated token in its bookmark.

Re: @coderabbitai[bot]'s review — #1316 (review)

The outside-diff docs finding (oob_teleop_control.rst, quick-start commands missing the token) is fixed in 093595c: the manual headset URL carries controlToken and every hub curl example sends X-Control-Token.

@gareth-morgan-nv Verified in docs/source/references/oob_teleop_control.rst: the manual headset URL includes controlToken, and all five hub curl examples include X-Control-Token. This addresses the outside-diff documentation finding.

Is it a security concern? Generally speaking I feel requiring a token will make it more secure but more overhead for headset to connect in a controlled setup

@yanziz-nvidia yes, it is a security fix. It addresses a PSIRT report: https://nvbugspro.nvidia.com/bug/6351674

Why: the OOB hub only checked a token if CONTROL_TOKEN was set, so a default setup had no authentication. Anyone who could reach the proxy port could register as a headset, read headset state, and rewrite the shared stream config.

What it does: every hub operation (WebSocket register and the HTTP state/config API) now requires a token. It is compared in constant time and fails closed, so with no token configured every caller is rejected. If CONTROL_TOKEN is unset, the host generates a random per-process token and prints it in the startup banner, so there is nothing to configure.

What it does not do: it is one shared secret per host process, not per user or headset, and anyone who obtains the bookmark URL has it. It does not bound receive memory or stop denial of service (tracked separately in #1317), and it does not protect against an attacker on the host itself.

Overhead for the headset: none in the automated flows, since the host puts the token in the bookmark URL. The one manual step is a hand-built headset URL, which now needs controlToken (the docs show the form). A controlled setup can pin its own value with CONTROL_TOKEN. #1318 moves the token from the URL query to the fragment so it is not sent in the request.

Summary

Other than the existing findings in previous comments, I found one token-discovery gap for embedded services. All 210 focused Python tests passed locally; CI is green. Headset hardware validation was not performed.

Legend: 🚫 BLOCKER = merge-blocking | 💡 SUGGESTION = meaningful improvement | 🧹 NIT = precise small correction

Severity Finding
🚫 BLOCKER none
💡 SUGGESTION wss.py:671 — Make the generated token discoverable for embedded services. CloudXRService(setup_oob=True) and embedded launchers bypass the CLI banner, which is the only place printing the token. I reproduced proxy startup requiring a generated token while exposing it in neither stdout, logs, nor the environment. Operators cannot authenticate HTTP requests or construct manual headset URLs using the documented instructions; hub-only mode also skips automatic URL delivery. Provide a documented service accessor or emit the token once through shared startup handling.

Re: @yanziz-nvidia's review — #1316 (comment)

Thanks. Agreed that embedded owners had no way to learn a generated token. Fixed in #1318 (commit 3db68f7), which is stacked on this PR, so this PR's approvals stay as they are:

  • CloudXRService.control_token returns the exact token the running hub enforces (None without setup_oob). The service resolves it once when the proxy starts and passes it into wss.run(), so a later CONTROL_TOKEN change cannot make the accessor disagree with the hub.
  • The token is not logged. The docs now point embedded owners at the accessor.
  • The test builds a real OOBControlHub from the token the service passes and checks hub.check_token(service.control_token) with CONTROL_TOKEN set and unset, before and after the environment changes.

Not covered: the accessor is in-process only. A detached service start still shows the generated token in the startup banner in service.log; an operator-supplied CONTROL_TOKEN is the way to avoid that. Verified with pre-commit; the new tests were not run locally (native extension not built), so CI is the check. No headset testing.

Re: @yanziz-nvidia's review — #1316 (comment)

Follow-up on the remaining parts of the suggestion, also in #1318 (commits 65c2242, 1028e67):

  • Docs: the hub-only section now says there is no bookmark delivery in that mode, that the startup banner prints a generated token on stdout (service.log under service start), and that setting CONTROL_TOKEN avoids the lookup. It points at the Quick start manual-URL step.
  • Tests: the accessor/hub agreement test now also runs with TELEOP_OOB_HUB_ONLY=1 and CONTROL_TOKEN unset, and a new banner test asserts the generated token is printed in hub-only mode (test_oob_teleop_env.py, 68 pass locally). The service tests need the native extension, which I did not build locally, so CI runs those.
