feat(http-invocation): emit authoritative NVCF-Error-Source on error responses - #2985
The vanity gateway records an error_source label on outbound client metrics from the NVCF-Error-Source response header (#2914). The invocation service never sets that header, so every error is classified as unknown. A worker can also supply the header itself, which would let it spoof the origin of an error.
What changed
New response middleware (routes/error_source.rs), applied as the outermost layer on both the path-based and TLB routers. It removes every existing NVCF-Error-Source value, then on 4xx and 5xx responses sets worker when the response was relayed from a worker, otherwise invocation_service.
Handlers that relay a worker response mark it with a WorkerResponse response extension: the pexec streaming path and the exec wrapper path (post_exec, get_exec). Gateway-generated timeouts are not marked.
Success and redirect responses carry no value, so worker-supplied copies never leak.
Customer Release Notes
Error responses from the invocation service now include an NVCF-Error-Source header (invocation_service or worker).

Testing
cargo test -p nvcf-invocation-service --no-fail-fast: all binaries pass, including the new unit tests and three new integration tests (spoofed and repeated worker headers on success and error, service-generated 401). One run hit a localstack "does not expose port 4566/tcp" container flake in test_sse; it passed on rerun and the earlier CORS flake did not recur.
Not run: Bazel (not available locally). No BUILD.bazel change is expected because the library sources are globbed.
QA: end-to-end check of the gateway metric through the real invocation path is still needed after deploy.
Notes
Observability impact: the gateway error_source label on http_client_request_duration_seconds moves from unknown to worker or invocation_service for errors. Dashboards or alerts that filter on error_source="unknown" may need updating. No metric is renamed or removed.
The caveat in the vanity-gateway README is left unchanged until this is validated end to end.
No API shape change, so src/clis/nvcf-cli needs no matching change.
…responses
The vanity gateway records an error_source label from the NVCF-Error-Source
response header, but the invocation service never set it, so every error was
classified as unknown. A worker could also supply the header and spoof it.
Add an outermost response middleware that drops every existing
NVCF-Error-Source value and, for 4xx and 5xx responses, sets it to worker
when a handler relayed a worker response, otherwise invocation_service.
Handlers mark relayed worker responses with a WorkerResponse extension
(pexec streaming path and the exec wrapper path). Success and redirect
responses carry no value. Both the path-based and TLB routers are covered.
Tests: unit tests for the middleware and integration tests covering spoofed
and repeated worker headers on success and error responses, and a
service-generated error.
Observability impact: the gateway error_source label on outbound client
metrics now reports worker and invocation_service instead of unknown.

The invocation server now removes worker-supplied nvcf-error-source headers and assigns worker or invocation_service to 4xx and 5xx responses. Worker-response markers pass through execution routes, and both routers apply the middleware.

Summary
Error-source middleware and contract src/invocation-plane-services/http-invocation/crates/server/src/routes/error_source.rs, src/invocation-plane-services/http-invocation/crates/server/src/routes/mod.rs
The middleware removes existing nvcf-error-source values. It sets worker on marked 4xx and 5xx responses, and invocation_service on other 4xx and 5xx responses. Tests cover duplicate headers, both error sources, and non-error statuses.
Execution routes return or attach an optional WorkerResponse extension for worker-produced responses. The passthrough mapper copies the extension when present.
Router integration and response tests src/invocation-plane-services/http-invocation/crates/server/src/app.rs, src/invocation-plane-services/http-invocation/crates/server/tests/mocks/nvcf_worker_mock.rs, src/invocation-plane-services/http-invocation/crates/server/tests/test_response_headers.rs
Both routers apply the middleware outside their timeout and panic layers. The worker mock accepts a configurable status, and integration tests check success, worker-error, and service-error headers.
NVIDIA/nvcf#2914: Consumes NVCF-Error-Source values for Vanity Gateway client metrics; this change supplies the invocation-service values.

Explanation
For [#2934], the middleware removes repeated NVCF-Error-Source values and stamps worker or invocation_service only on 4xx and 5xx responses. The unit and integration tests cover spoofed headers, repeated headers, worker errors, service errors, and success responses. The reviewed evidence does not show the gateway error_source metric through the real invocation path. The PR description states that this validation remains outstanding.
Resolution
Provide reviewable evidence for the gateway metric through the real invocation path, or add equivalent automated coverage, before confirming full [#2934] acceptance.

The fixture returns Code::Unauthenticated for an unregistered token, and the pexec error mapping converts it to StatusCode::UNAUTHORIZED. The current assertion also accepts a 404 or 500 response when it carries invocation_service.
This is a test-coverage improvement. The existing test_bad_auth test already detects the same 401 regression on this route.

Expose the error-source header to allowed browser origins.
For a cross-origin browser request, this layer adds nvcf-error-source, but legacy_cors_layer does not list it in Access-Control-Expose-Headers. Browser code therefore cannot read the new value. Expose the header while preserving headers already exposed by the response, such as the request ID. (docs.rs)
