What

Two performance fixes in the native views, no public API change.

Document commands run off the UI thread. getStrokes serialized every point of
every stroke to JSON inside the command handler, and setStrokes parsed the document and
built an ink stroke per point there too. On a long drawing both are long enough to drop
frames while the canvas is still interactive. The image export already worked off the UI
thread, so this brings the two remaining commands in line:

  • Android: both commands snapshot on the UI thread, then run on the existing export
executor (EXPORTER renamed to WORKER, since it is now shared) and post the result
back. Sharing the single thread means document work queues behind an export rather than
a second thread touching ink at the same time.
  • iOS: both commands run on a QOS_CLASS_USER_INITIATED global queue and hop back to the
main queue to emit the result. Reading PKStrokePath off the main thread matches what
    INKImageExporter already does with imageFromRect:.

The iOS brush map no longer grows for the whole session. INKPadView keeps an
INKBrushInfo per stroke keyed by the stroke's creation date, because PKStroke does not
carry the brush the user picked. Those entries were never removed: clear, undo and the
eraser all leave them behind. A long session that draws, clears and redraws accumulates one
entry per stroke ever made.

Pruning to the strokes currently in the drawing would break undo, which restores strokes
whose entries would already be gone, so this keeps a bounded window of the most recent
1000 entries instead. Memory is flat, undo keeps working, and a stroke older than the
window falls back to the ink-derived brush that was already the fallback for unknown
strokes.

Verification

  • yarn lint, yarn typecheck, yarn test (44 tests)
  • xcodebuild -scheme ReactNativeInkpad -configuration Debug -sdk iphonesimulator -> BUILD SUCCEEDED
  • ./gradlew :react-native-inkpad:compileDebugKotlin :react-native-inkpad:testDebugUnitTest -> BUILD SUCCESSFUL

The e2e run needs a booted simulator or emulator with a release build, so it is left to CI.
Worth a look on the iOS job in particular, since reading PencilKit objects off the main
thread is the one assumption here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Loading and saving drawings, along with image export, now run work in the background to help keep the interface responsive.
  • Bug Fixes
    • If drawing data cannot be loaded, the existing drawing is preserved and an error is reported.

getStrokes serialized every point to JSON on the UI thread on both platforms, and
setStrokes built a stroke per point there too. Both now run on a worker thread and
answer back on the UI thread, the way the image export already did. The Android
export executor is shared, so the document commands queue behind it instead of
building a second thread.

The iOS brush map grew for the whole session and was never pruned, because clear
and undo leave entries that undo itself still needs. Keeping the most recent
1000 bounds the memory while leaving undo intact.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Android and iOS now process stroke document reads and writes on background queues, with results handled on the UI thread. Android image exports use the shared worker. iOS tracks brush metadata insertion order and limits the cache to 1,000 entries.

Moving document work off the UI thread introduces race windows. Edits made, or reads issued, while a load is in flight can be overwritten or return stale data. Callers that await each command are unaffected. Resolve or accept this before merging.

Stale setStrokes result can erase newer user edits.

setStrokes now parses on WORKER and later calls replaceAll(next) on the UI thread. This is a behavior change. The old code replaced the strokes synchronously.

While the worker runs, the user can still draw, erase, undo, or call clear. replaceAll then overwrites those edits without a check. It also records a Replace op whose "before" list comes from the new state. A stroke drawn in that window is lost, and the caller already received no error.

Two setStrokes calls can also overlap with other commands. The single-thread WORKER keeps them in order. The posted results can still interleave with user edits.

Add a guard. For example, keep a documentGeneration counter on the UI thread. Bump it on each user edit and on each setStrokes call. Capture it before WORKER.execute. Apply the result only if it is unchanged. Otherwise call emitError with a clear "document changed" message. Alternatively, accept last-writer-wins and document that behavior.

Preserve command ordering between setStrokes and getStrokes.

getStrokes snapshots _canvas.drawing before it dispatches encoding. setStrokes applies the decoded drawing later on the main queue. If callers issue getStrokes after setStrokes without awaiting the result, getStrokes can serialize the old drawing.

Serialize the complete command sequence, including the main-thread replacement and snapshot. A serial codec queue alone does not fix this race. Awaiting setStrokes remains safe because the success result is emitted after replacement.

Brush eviction can drop metadata for strokes that are still in the drawing.

rememberBrush:forDate: evicts by insertion order. It does not check whether the stroke still exists in the drawing. Suppose a drawing has more than 1,000 strokes. The oldest strokes then lose their brush entry, even though they are still drawn and can be undone. encodeDrawing falls back to ink-derived type, color, input, and size for those strokes. Custom values, such as input "stylus" or a size that differs from estimatedSize, are lost on getStrokes. This behavior matches the PR description, but the getStrokes output for older strokes becomes lossy.

Also, setStrokes registers decoded brushes through enumerateKeysAndObjectsUsingBlock:. That enumeration order is unspecified. If the decoded drawing has more than 1,000 strokes, the retained window is arbitrary rather than the most recent strokes.

Sort the decoded entries by date before registering them.

Proposed fix for the decode ordering (lines 216-218)

+        [view rememberBrush:decoded.brushes[created] forDate:created];
+      }

hey Aziz, thanks for the PR bro. i went through the 3 CodeRabbit comments and yeah, they're valid.

  1. on Android, setStrokes is async, so if you do setStrokes(doc); clear(), the clear can run before the document finishes loading, and then the loaded doc shows up afterward. i wouldn't use a generation counter here though, because just touching the canvas could invalidate a load. WORKER is single-threaded, so we can route getStrokes, exportImage, clear, undo and redo through a WORKER.execute { post { ... } } hop to keep them behind the pending replaceAll.

  2. iOS has the same ordering issue, but it's worse because the global queue is concurrent. two setStrokes calls can finish out of order, so the older doc could end up overwriting the newer one. a private serial queue with the same hop should fix that too.

  3. the iOS brush bug happens once we go past 1000 strokes. rememberNewStrokes can treat strokes that were evicted from its tracking map as new, even though they're still on the canvas. they end up getting the current brush, so their color can be wrong after saving and reloading. sorting won't fix this. i'd either only evict entries whose dates aren't in _canvas.drawing.strokes, or just drop the cap.

Thanks for this, Aziz. Both claims held up when I measured them. On a 300-stroke drawing, getStrokes and setStrokes blocked the main thread for 65 ms and 89 ms on the iOS simulator. On the Android emulator it was 160 ms and 434 ms.

I carried your commit into #3, where you're still its author and a co-author on the two follow-ups, and added the ordering fixes from the review. Commands now wait in a small main-thread queue while a setStrokes is loading. I didn't route them all through the worker as I suggested in my review, because on Android the export thread can wait there for the background image. I also dropped the brush map cap. An entry is about 116 bytes, while undo history holds roughly 4.8 KB per stroke, so the cap saved little and caused the wrong-brush bug.

Closing this in favor of #3.
