Typst Thesis Starter

Writing a Thesis can be quite challenging since you have to combine many skills: those of your research field to do the actual research, then those of an author to write the thesis, and finally design knowledge to make it look good. This project helps you with the last part by kick-starting your Typst document.

Templates on the Typst Universe come ready-made, but limit design flexibility. They also require you to organize your project structure independently. Instead, we provide a complete repository scaffold that lets you begin writing immediately, while maintaining full control over styling and layout.

See how it looks like in this preview PDF. I've extracted this template repository from my own thesis. See also my blog post. You remain in full control over any styling/layout.

Get started

  1. Create new repo. Click on Use this template on GitHub, then Create a new repository.

  2. Language Server. I recommend the great Tinymist Typst language server, which (among others) is available for VSCode via the Tinymist Typst Extension. Some recommended extensions should be proposed automatically in VSCode as I've set them up in extensions.json.

  3. Compile & Preview. Open the thesis.typ file. You should see a Preview button (codelens) at the very top. Click on it and make sure the document compiles without any errors.

  4. Enjoy. Finally, follow the hints in the document itself (see its Intro chapter). Click anywhere in the preview pane to jump to the respective code.
