What changed

list_bots hides another owner's Bot and authorize(actor, 'update-bot', { id }) refuses the
same change with bot/forbidden, but the three bot write tools only asked "am I a Main
Bot", so a Main Bot of owner-1 could rewrite owner-2's Bot instructions, retire that Bot or
stop its running turn.

One predicate next to findTeamBot now answers that question once:

const writableBot = (name, self) => {
  const bot = findTeamBot(name)
  if (bot === undefined || !rt.authzEnforced?.()) return bot
  const selfOwner = rt.botOf(self)?.ownerId
  if (selfOwner === undefined) return undefined
  if (bot.ownerId === selfOwner) return bot
  return rt.hasGrant?.(bot.id, selfOwner) === true ? bot : undefined
}
  • With authz on, stop_bot, update_bot and archive_bot accept a target only when its
    ownerId is the caller's owner, or when it is granted to that owner.
  • inRoom takes no part, and listed() is not reused: its inRoom.has(bot.id) branch would
    legalize "same room ⇒ may edit", which is wider than the hole. listed()/foreign() stay
    read predicates.
  • With authz off the predicate is the old findTeamBot, so a single-owner install does not
    notice; #1700's retired/unaddressable contract still runs through findTeamBot.
  • message_bot, store.js findBot, the other teamNames() call sites, listed()/
    foreign(), the client and the bundle are untouched.

The three refusals now read one bare sentence, No Bot named <name>., in place of the
Team: <every live Bot> suffix that stop_bot and archive_bot carried (update_bot was
already bare). The old text had two defects: a longer answer for an existing foreign Bot than
for a missing one, which alone confirms the target exists, and a list of names the actor
cannot see (teamNames() filters only teamBot && !retiredBot, no owner filter). The cost is
accepted in the issue: a mistyped name loses the one-line team reminder, and #1844's
#1700 block was split so the four tools this change does not touch keep asserting their own
Team: sentences.

docs/subsystems/core-host.md gains one bullet for the write-side owner rule; that is what
arch-docs asks for when core/src/host/tools.js moves, and the alternative
Docs-not-needed: trailer would have left the rule undocumented.

Red first

The three new cases were written first and run on the base 1c44a786 with only
core/src/host/tools.js left at its base copy:

# core/test/update-bot.test.js             tests 7  pass 5  fail 2
  not ok 5 - #1844: a Main Bot cannot rewrite another owner's Bot instructions
    + 'Updated Van.' (owner-2's instructions rewritten)
    - 'No Bot named Van.'
  not ok 6 - #1844: a missing name and another owner's Bot answer the same sentence

# core/test/archive-bot.test.js            tests 6  pass 3  fail 3
  not ok 6 - #1844: a Main Bot cannot archive another owner's Bot
    + 'No Bot named Van. Team: Chief, Writer' (a missing name leaks the team,
    - 'No Bot named Van.' including owner-2's Bot)
  not ok 3 - #1700: ... (stop_bot still answers the Team: sentence, update_bot does not)

# core/test/bot-messages.test.js           tests 28 pass 27 fail 1
  not ok 8 - #1844: a Main Bot cannot stop another owner's running Bot
    + 'No Bot named Van. Team: Chief, Writer'
    - 'No Bot named Van.'

A first run of the same probe with the assertions ordered the other way also showed the write
landing: archive_bot answered Archived Van. It is out of the tree and the default Bot list; … and b1.hidden/fields['flybot-tree'].retired were set. After the fix the same three
files are 7/7, 6/6 and 28/28.

Covered acceptance classes: cross-owner refused with the target's instructions, hidden,
fields and running turn unchanged; same owner still writes; a granted Bot (state.grants)
still writes; authz off unchanged (the existing single-owner cases plus one explicit case);
missing and foreign answer one identical sentence per tool; no refusal text carries another
owner's Bot name.

Generated mirrors

core/src/host/tools.js is carried by 0002-flybot-api-host.patch, and
core/test/update-bot.test.js is an upstream file, so it is registered under 0002 in
patches/ds-bot/topics.json (without a topic generate refuses with "edited upstream files
with no topic"). core/test/bot-messages.test.js is already under 0001, and
core/test/archive-bot.test.js is a whole-file mirror under patches/ds-bot/files/. Only
node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate wrote them: 0001 (+37), 0002 (+113/−6),
files/test/archive-bot.test.js (+45/−2) and topics.json (+2/−1). A second generate
produced byte-identical files for all three (sha1 verified before and after), nothing was
edited by hand, core/client.js is untouched (build-client --check clean), and the third
check line proves core/ equals ds-bot/ plus the patches.

`list_bots` hides another owner's Bot and `authorize` refuses the same
change, but `update_bot`, `archive_bot` and `stop_bot` only asked "am I a
Main Bot", so a Main Bot could rewrite another owner's Bot instructions,
retire it or stop its running turn.

One explicit predicate, `writableBot`, now resolves the target for those
three tools: with authz on it accepts only a Bot of the caller's own owner
or one granted to that owner, and `inRoom` takes no part — visibility is
not authorization. With authz off the predicate is the old lookup, so a
single-owner install does not notice.

The three refusals also read one bare sentence, `No Bot named <name>.`,
instead of naming the team: the old longer answer told the actor that a
Bot it cannot see exists and listed names it cannot see.

Thanks for the three verdicts this round. This one, #1878, has had no reviewer response yet, so here is the tip for it.

Tip 8816eb2e4250191bbf5791f331eecc8ae62339d9 · base 1c44a786cd460472afa8727f6a18ba895a59969b · tree 1def26b6 · 10 files, +363/−19.

The change in one sentence: one predicate, writableBot, now keeps another owner's Bot out of a Main Bot's three write tools — stop_bot, update_bot and archive_bot accept a target only when its ownerId is the caller's owner, or the Bot is granted to that owner; with authz off it is the old findTeamBot lookup, so a single-owner install is unchanged; the three refusals also became one bare No Bot named <name>. instead of a Team: list naming Bots the actor cannot see.

Two facts re-read at this tip rather than taken from the author (core/src/host/tools.js fetched at 8816eb2e):

  • The three write tools go through the predicate: :313 (stop_bot), :384 (update_bot), :414 (archive_bot) call writableBot.
  • findTeamBot now appears only at :221 (inside writableBot itself), :251 (message_bot's to), and :451 / :483 / :526 / :534 (group tools, untouched by this PR). No write tool keeps a raw lookup.

Verify at this tip (run on the committed tree with ARCH_DOCS_BASE=1c44a786…): core 2258/2258 (the three touched files 7/7, 6/6, 28/28), social 541/541, tree 127/127, timeline 135/135, workflow 336/336, .github/scripts 561/561, interop 37/37, live-e2e 24/24; arch-docs: OK (10 changed file(s)); patch chain 10 patches apply cleanly in order and core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/. Red first holds on the base with only tools.js reverted: 5/7, 3/6 and 27/28, with the expected diffs.

Checks at this tip: 14 check-runs — tests-ok, merge-gate, judge, package, risk tier, every plugin suite, ubuntu-latest · Node 24 and reviewed tip all success; enqueue-guard red only because no Verdict names this tip yet. (agent-audience appears twice: the earlier entry was cancelled and superseded by a second run at the same tip, which succeeded.)

Security's self-test on this PR reported a PASS; that is advisory evidence only, not a merge gate.

Request: please issue a Verdict for this tip, or release it directly.

Ran at this tip:

$ cd p1878tip/core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/update-bot.test.js test/archive-bot.test.js test/bot-messages.test.js
# tests 41  # pass 41  # fail 0
$ cp p1878base/core/src/host/tools.js p1878tip/core/src/host/tools.js && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/update-bot.test.js test/archive-bot.test.js test/bot-messages.test.js

$ node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check && node core/scripts/build-client.mjs --check
# 10 patches apply cleanly; core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/; client check clean

Red first: with only core/src/host/tools.js put back to the base blob (p1878base, commit 1c44a786), 6 of 41 fail — the three new #1844 cases (cross-owner update_bot/archive_bot/stop_bot), the identical-sentence cases, and the two assertions the changed refusal text touches. Restored the tip blob and got 41/41 again (sha1 matches). The change is load-bearing.

Security review of the write surface:

  • writableBot accepts a target only when bot.ownerId === rt.botOf(self)?.ownerId or rt.hasGrant(bot.id, selfOwner) === true; inRoom/listed() take no part, so "visible in the same room" no longer implies writable. hasGrant's (botId, peer) peer is an owner id — the same shape reach.js:152 and tools.js:153 already use, so the grant branch is not a fresh trust path.
  • With authz off (rt.authzEnforced?.() false) it is exactly the old findTeamBot, so single-owner installs keep behaviour; with authz on and no owner id it refuses closed.
  • All three tools answer an unknown name and a foreign Bot with the same bare No Bot named <name>., so the refusal no longer confirms existence or lists owner-2's Bot names (teamNames() had no owner filter). Own Bot and granted Bot still write — covered by the tests.
  • message_bot, store.js findBot, listed()/foreign(), the client and core/client.js are untouched; build-client --check is clean. Scope at tip is exactly the 10 files in the compare (tools.js +1 source, three tests, doc bullet, generated patches/topics, changelog fragment) — no hidden file.
  • docs/subsystems/core-host.md gains the one write-rule bullet arch-docs asks for; the changelog fragment exists.

Checks at 8816eb2e: all 14 check-runs green except enqueue-guard, whose failure is exactly no Verifier report names the tip 8816eb2e4250 — the expected pre-PASS refusal, not a defect. tests-ok green at this tip.

Not run: the whole 2258-test core suite as one process on this box (the parallel run is unreliable here — test/agents.test.js is green alone but red inside the batch; CI tests-ok is green at the tip), the smoke bench and the queue rebuild.

Metadata: agent-pr added; checkpoint block present and compliant (block 1420 chars, summary 578, files 10 incl. core/src/host/tools.js, checks at this tip).
