Student Performance Project

Overview

The Student Performance Project analyzes academic performance through various factors such as gender, race/ethnicity, parental education, lunch type, and completion of test preparation courses. The dataset, 'stud.csv', serves as the primary data source for this project.

Aim of the Project

The primary goal of this project is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the factors influencing students' academic performance. This study explores the complex relationships between student achievement and socio-demographic variables such as gender, race/ethnicity, parental education levels, lunch type, and test preparation course completion.

Additionally, the project aims to utilize advanced machine learning models to predict students' math scores based on these features.

Challenges and Solutions

1. Categorical Variable Handling

Challenge: Efficient handling of categorical variables (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, parental education) during preprocessing.

Solution: Utilize encoding techniques like one-hot encoding and explore advanced methods such as target encoding. Regularly assess the impact of encoding choices on model performance.

2. Overfitting and Model Generalization

Challenge: Addressing overfitting concerns to ensure models generalize well to new data.

Solution: Implement K-fold cross-validation and L1 and L2 regularization methods during model training to provide a robust evaluation metric.

  • Use the Pandas library to import the 'stud.csv' dataset and convert it to a DataFrame.

  • Implement machine learning models to predict math scores based on other features.

Overall Insights

In the analysis, it was observed that students who received a standard lunch performed better compared to those with a free/reduced lunch. Additionally, students belonging to group E generally performed well in all aspects compared to students from other race/ethnicity groups.
