Summary

  • A shared episode or show link that brought someone to install boxlore now opens only on the first launch of that install. Clearing the app's data no longer reopens the same page.

Motivation

  • "Clear data" resets the mark that says the install link was handled, but Google Play keeps returning the original install's referrer. Every first launch after clearing data opened the same shared episode again, with no link tapped.

What changed

  • :core:catalog: InstallReferrerManager opens the referred page only when isFreshInstall says Play began the install within the last day (FRESH_INSTALL_WINDOW_MS). An unknown install time keeps the old behaviour. Attribution is still reported either way.
  • InstallReferrerManagerTest covers a fresh install, an unknown install time, and a launch days after the install.
  • core/catalog/README.md updated.

Behavior & compatibility

  • New installs from a shared link behave as before.
  • No stored data, ID or analytics event changes.

User impact — pick exactly one

Release copy (verbatim — highest priority)

CHANGELOG.md (required developer copy)

Fixed

  • InstallReferrerManager opens an install link only on a fresh install, so clearing app data no longer reopens the shared page.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

Fixes

  • Clearing boxlore's data no longer opens a random episode on the next launch.

Test plan

  • JVM: InstallReferrerManagerTest, :core:catalog:compileDebugKotlin, ktlint and detekt pass locally.
  • Device: the cause was seen on a phone (Clear data, then launch, opened an episode). The fix has not been checked on a device yet. There is no layout change, so phone, tablet, foldable and resizable-window states are not affected.
  • Required checks are green before merge, or a maintainer explicitly authorized a check bypass for this PR

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Shared pages from install referrers now open only when the install began within the past 24 hours or the install time is unknown. Older install times and future timestamps no longer trigger the page.
    • Attribution is still reported whether or not the shared page opens, and the referrer is marked as processed.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for recent, unknown, older, and future install times, along with attribution and processed-state handling.

InstallReferrerManager now opens a shared page only when the install timestamp is unknown or the install occurred within the previous 24 hours. It reports attribution and marks the referrer processed for both fresh and replayed referrers. Tests and the README cover this behavior.

Changes: Install Referrer Freshness

isFreshInstall accepts unknown timestamps and known timestamps with elapsed time from zero to 24 hours, inclusive. The manager skips opening pages for older installs and future timestamps, while still reporting attribution and marking the referrer processed. Tests cover freshness boundaries, replay handling, referral emission, and the processed flag. The README describes the freshness condition.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

All three listed CodeRabbit review threads are marked discussion=resolved. The current review produced zero actionable findings. No unresolved review thread remains. Prior failure addressed: The current review metadata marks the README, future-timestamp, and callback-test threads resolved; the earlier run had no resolved-status information.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only catalog implementation/tests and its README. The production diff adds no feature, designsystem, playback, analytics, PostHog, Hilt, Koin, Dagger, MockK, PlaybackRepository, or AppContainer dependency. The catalog module dependency files are unchanged. The existing SharedPreferences file and referrer_processed key remain unchanged, and the existing PrefsFileMigrator path remains in use, so no identity or storage contract migration is required.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The PR changes production Kotlin in core/catalog/src/main/.../InstallReferrerManager.kt. It also modifies the matching module README, core/catalog/README.md, in the same PR. The README documents the fresh-install behavior and clear-data rationale.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR substantially changes InstallReferrerManager logic and adds hermetic Robolectric JVM tests under core/catalog/src/test. The tests cover fresh installs, unknown install time, stale installs after clear data, future install timestamps, attribution without opening the page, referral persistence, and opening a fresh referrer. No new error path requires separate coverage.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

@core/catalog/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/catalog/InstallReferrerManagerTest.kt:
- Line 164: Add a hermetic callback-level test for checkInstallReferrer using
the existing Mockito and Robolectric setup. Mock the Play client callback and
verify that fresh referrers are emitted and attributed, while old referrers are
suppressed but still attributed; keep the existing isFreshInstall test focused
on freshness logic.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Document the adaptive-state behavior and verification.

This change suppresses startup navigation for stale referrers, but the README does not describe the affected tablet, foldable, or resizable-window behavior or its verification. Add the behavior and the checks performed. Mark device checks as pending if they have not run. As per coding guidelines, “Every Android UI or behavior change ... must handle the affected tablet, foldable, and resizable-window states.” The adaptive contract also requires the module README to document the affected behavior and verification.
