What

Add @comark/html/document for rendering parsed documents without loading Markdown serializers or YAML. Custom components receive render, data, and renderData; existing exports keep format overrides and state.handlers.

Feel free to close the PR if this is something you don't want.

Why

The new entry's browser bundle is about 3.6 kB gzipped, compared with 33 kB from the existing export. Tests cover HTML output, escaping, nested bindings, and the existing APIs. Consumer checks verify browser bundling and direct Node import, with an 8 kB gzip budget.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a dedicated HTML rendering option that produces trimmed HTML and supports custom components.
    • HTML rendering works without loading Markdown serializers or YAML support, reducing the @comark/html bundle size.
    • Added a direct HTML-rendering entry point with HTML-specific options, including control over block separators.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how HTML-only rendering differs from Markdown rendering, including output formats, component behavior, and rendering boundaries.

Walkthrough

The PR adds a dedicated HTML renderer under comark/render/html for existing Markdown documents. It updates package exports and @comark/html to use the renderer, moves HTML attribute handling into a dedicated module, and changes state creation to receive handler maps.

Changes: HTML document rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared rendering state and HTML attributes
packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/..., packages/comark/src/utils/index.ts, packages/comark/src/render/index.ts, packages/comark/test/math.test.ts
HTML attribute resolution and serialization move to html-attributes.ts. createState now accepts a handler map, which the existing renderer passes when creating state. The math test imports the renderer from its new entry path.
Document renderer and package entry points
packages/comark/src/render/html.ts, packages/comark/package.json, packages/comark-html/src/*, AGENTS.md, docs/content/3.rendering/2.html.md
A new renderer produces trimmed HTML from document nodes, using HTML and comment handlers and HTML-specific options. Package exports and @comark/html use the new entry point. Documentation describes HTML-only handlers and output format.
Renderer validation and package checks
packages/comark-html/test/render.test.ts, packages/comark/test/render-html-bundle.test.ts, test/bundle.test.ts
Tests compare output with generic HTML-mode rendering, cover component behavior, and check bundle contents. Package-size snapshots are updated.

Explanation

The title "feat(html): add a smaller document renderer" matches the main change. The PR adds a new HTML document renderer (@comark/html/document per the objectives; the diff adds packages/comark/src/render/html.ts with renderHtmlFromDocument and a ./render/html export) that renders parsed documents without loading Markdown serializers or YAML, which is the smaller bundle the title describes. The title uses a conventional commit prefix and is specific. One naming mismatch: the objectives say the entry is @comark/html/document, while the diff code uses comark/render/html and @comark/html/render. This does not affect the title's accuracy.

Thanks for the PPR @onmax
I think we can simplify and improve it a bit,

  • I think we can remove state export from state.ts I don't see any reference to it

  • We can also remove createState from state.ts and move createRuntimeState(defaultHandlers, ctx) directly to render.ts the only place it used

  • Then lets remove runtime.ts and move all logic back to state.ts

  • lets move render.ts to render/index.ts which makes more sense with html.ts

  • Instead of instroducing @comark/html/document as new export, lets update @coamrk/html/render to use new html renderer

@farnabaz, i think 1-4 makes sense, but

On the 5th, @comark/html imports ./render.ts, so renderHtml and createHtmlRenderer would switch too. Components would get { render, data, renderData } instead of state, which drops state.handlers, applyContext and format. this is a breaking change. is that ok?

And should /render keep export * from 'comark/render'?

Drop the unused `state` export and the `createState` wrapper so state.ts no
longer imports the Markdown handlers. Each renderer now passes its own
handler map to `createState`. Move `render.ts` to `render/index.ts` next to
`render/html.ts`.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Distinguish an element from a list of children.

If a component calls render(['Hello ', ['strong', {}, 'world']]), this condition treats the child list as one element because its first item is a string. state.one then uses "Hello " as a tag name instead of rendering both children. Check the second item for an attributes object before selecting the element branch.

Can't we keep the same interface? I can understand dropping default handler and format, but why we drop state?

And should /render keep export * from 'comark/render'?

I guess we can remove this, comark/render have markdown related stuff in it too and I don't see if we need those utils in html render

onmax added 3 commits October 27, 2026 13:55
`renderHtmlFromDocument`, `renderHtml` and `createHtmlRenderer` now use
`comark/render/html`, so they no longer load the Markdown serializers or
YAML. Components still receive the renderer `state`.

BREAKING CHANGE: `state.handlers` only contains `html` and `comment`, the
`format` option is gone, and `@comark/html/render` no longer re-exports
`comark/render`. Import `render`, `renderMarkdown`, `renderFrontmatter`
and `resolveAttributes` from `comark/render` instead. The
`@comark/html/document` entry is removed.
The HTML binding plugin imported `resolveAttributes` from `comark/render`,
which loads every Markdown handler. Import it from `comark/utils` instead,
and test that the plugin loads only the HTML and comment handlers.

The docs said `@comark/html` never loads YAML. Only `@comark/html/render`
avoids it; the root entry and the plugins import the parser, which loads YAML
for frontmatter.

packages/comark/src/render/html.ts:14-25
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Import renderHtmlFromDocument from @comark/html/render in the JSDoc example.

The JSDoc states that renderHtmlFromDocument renders without loading Markdown serializers or YAML support. The example imports it from the root @comark/html entry. That entry imports createMarkdownParser from comark, which loads YAML for frontmatter. A reader who copies the example therefore loads the parser and YAML support that this renderer is documented to avoid. The render-only entry @comark/html/render exports the same function without that import chain.
