Closes #974

What

Every File pack and every network pack now raises the S41.15 vocabulary the VxWorks 6.4 File introduced, carrying the platform's own code in the event's NativeCode where the platform gave one (the #975 shape).

File packs - each failing call raises SOLIDSYSLOG_CAT_FILE_IO_FAILED with the code naming the call, under the pack's own source:

Pack Native code Raised alone (no code)
Posix errno a short write
Windows the CRT errno, or the value _sopen_s / _chsize_s answer a short _write
FatFs FRESULT a short f_write answered FR_OK (full volume)
PlusFat the task errno from ff_stdio; the FF_Error_t from FF_FlushCache for the sync an incomplete ff_fwrite
LittleFs the negative lfs_error a write accepted in part

A short read raises nothing in every pack (the store judges it), nor does Exists on an absent path; Delete is unchanged. Close now reports too, and Cleanup goes through Close, as the VxWorks File already does. FatFs needs one more step: f_close returns without freeing the file object or its FF_FS_LOCK entry when its sync fails, so the File still reports itself closed, as the contract says, but owes FatFs that close. The next Open settles it first and is refused, opening nothing, if it fails again; FR_INVALID_OBJECT (a remount) owes nothing. The File contract is unchanged. FatFs and Plus-FAT no longer truncate at an unknown position when the seek to the start fails: the truncate is reported and nothing is cut.

Streams - every existing SOLIDSYSLOG_CAT_STREAM_CONNECT_FAILED report carries the code the step left: errno after socket / fcntl / connect / select / getsockopt and the pending SO_ERROR (Posix, lwIP Sockets), WSAGetLastError likewise (Winsock), the err_t from tcp_connect or the callback that ended the attempt (lwIP Raw), FreeRTOS_connect's return (Plus-TCP), and connectWithTimeout's errno (VxWorks). A connect budget expiring carries none, except on VxWorks where the stack says so with EINPROGRESS. The datagrams already carried theirs (VxWorks, Plus-TCP) or raise no faults, so nothing changed there.

Docs - each platform page says which faults its File raises, what its native code is, and what a failed connect carries.

Tests - every pack has a test per failing call with its code and one for the no-code case; the fakes gained the seams that needed (close / seek / truncate results, errno on refusal). The Windows File test installs a no-op invalid-parameter handler so a call on a closed descriptor returns EBADF under the debug CRT instead of asserting; the POSIX short write is driven with RLIMIT_FSIZE.

Decisions for review

  • Destroy reports a failed close under the config lock. The branch review flagged that Cleanup -> Close -> CLOSE_FAILED now runs the handler inside SolidSyslog_LockConfig. I kept it: SolidSyslogConfigLock.h states Destroy releases resources inside the lock and may block, SolidSyslogError.h forbids the handler calling any Create or Destroy, and the VxWorks File on main already does exactly this. Say if you would rather the Cleanup path closed silently.
  • Eleven *_ReportFailure / *_ReportConnectFailureWith* helpers share one shape (code non-zero -> SolidSyslog_ErrorWithNativeCode, else SolidSyslog_Error), one per pack as the VxWorks File set the pattern. A single Core helper such as SolidSyslog_ErrorWithOptionalNativeCode would carry the rule once, but it is a public API addition, so I left it for you to call.

Checks run

gcc (every test binary, VxWorks included), FreeRTOS-host (every test binary), MSVC (whole suite), clang-format, misra_renumber.py --apply, markdownlint, check_platform_docs.py, check_issue_links.py. check_references.py fails locally on the generated api/ pages exactly as main does; CI builds them first.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File-operation and TCP connection failure reports now include platform-native error codes when available, alongside operation-specific details.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Incomplete writes and failed synchronisation are reported. Truncation stops if repositioning fails, and certain failed file closes are retried before a later open.
    • Connection failures identify the step that failed more clearly.
  • Documentation
    • Platform guidance now explains which failures are reported and when native error details are available.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for file-operation failures, connection errors, and native error reporting.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the purpose, implementation details, affected File and network packs, documentation, tests, review decisions, and checks run. It is complete despite using headings that differ from the template.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #974 is active and has coding requirements. The five requested File packs now report operation-specific S41.15 failures with the available native code. The six requested stream packs now attach the failing step's native code, while timeout cases correctly omit it where no code exists. Existing datagram behaviour remains compliant because the affected packs already carry native codes or raise no fault. Tests cover the new File and stream paths, including no-code short transfers. Platform pages document the fault and native-code rules. The changes capture native error values at the failing call sites, consistent with MISRA C:2012 Rule 22.10.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #974. FatFs close-retry handling and truncate guards preserve the File contract while supporting correct failure reporting. Fake seams and C++ tests verify the required paths. Documentation, MISRA suppression line updates, and the CI identifier exclusion support the implementation or its verification. No unrelated production feature is demonstrated.

…P Raw reads the peer's code in the abort hop, the socket streams read SO_ERROR for the exception set

- FatFs: an Open whose retried close fails again is refused, so f_open never
  discards the held file and its FF_FS_LOCK entry. The page states this
  departs from the File contract's "a failed open leaves the file closed".
- lwIP Raw: the abort hop reads Errored and LastError on the lwIP thread that
  wrote them, and the report is made from that snapshot, so the code reaches
  the caller's thread with its flag. The FIN path carries ERR_CLSD.
- Posix, Winsock, lwIP Sockets: a socket select flags in the exception set is
  reported with its pending SO_ERROR. On Winsock that is how a refused connect
  is normally answered. One SO_ERROR read per pack serves this path and the
  deferred-error check.

🟠 Major · Treat FR_INVALID_OBJECT as closed after f_close. · SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c:78

Platform/FatFs/Source/SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c:78
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Treat FR_INVALID_OBJECT as closed after f_close.

A remount invalidates open FatFs objects. FR_INVALID_OBJECT therefore does not identify a file that can be retried, and no retained lock makes abandoning it unsafe. The current IsOpen value prevents FatFsFile_Open from reaching f_open, so later opens can be refused indefinitely.

Clear IsOpen for this result, while still reporting the close failure. Retain it for retryable close failures such as a failed sync.

Suggested fix
-        self->IsOpen = (result != FR_OK);
+        self->IsOpen = (result != FR_OK) && (result != FR_INVALID_OBJECT);

Add coverage for FR_INVALID_OBJECT followed by a successful Open, and document that only retryable close failures retain the file.

…d, and the close FatFs still owes is settled by the next Open

A failed f_close leaves FatFs holding the file object and its FF_FS_LOCK
entry. Keeping the File open to retry it broke the contract twice over: a
Close that did not close, and a refused Open that left the file open. The
File now reports itself closed and privately owes the close; the next Open
settles it before reusing the object and is refused, opening nothing, if it
fails again. FR_INVALID_OBJECT owes nothing: FatFs no longer knows the
object, as after a remount, so later opens are not refused forever.
Destroy tries an owed close once more and gives the slot back regardless.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c:78 (treat FR_INVALID_OBJECT as closed after f_close): fixed in 3d891ef, and the close handling is reshaped so the File contract holds.

  • Close always leaves the File closed, as the contract requires. A failed f_close is reported and, unless it answered FR_INVALID_OBJECT, recorded as a close FatFs is still owed.
  • The next Open settles an owed close before reusing the file object. If it succeeds, or answers FR_INVALID_OBJECT, the open proceeds. If it fails again it is reported, the Open answers false and f_open is never called, and the File stays closed with the close still owed.
  • So a remount no longer refuses later opens indefinitely, and a failed Open never leaves the File open.
  • Destroy tries an owed close once more and gives the slot back regardless; the FatFs page states the FF_FS_LOCK consequence.

Tests cover FR_INVALID_OBJECT owing nothing, an owed close that turns into FR_INVALID_OBJECT letting the Open proceed, a refused Open opening nothing, a close still owed after a refused Open being settled by the next, and Destroy.

🟡 Minor · Report the failed retry close. · SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c:150-171

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Report the failed retry close.

When Open settles an owed close, f_close can return FR_INVALID_OBJECT. The helper clears CloseOwed, but then suppresses the required S41.15 close event. Report SOLIDSYSLOG_FILE_ERROR_CLOSE_FAILED with native FR_INVALID_OBJECT, while retaining the existing state transition that allows Open to continue.

Suggested fix
         FRESULT result = f_close(&self->Fp);
         self->CloseOwed = FatFsFile_IsCloseStillOwed(result);

+        if (result != FR_OK)
         {
             FatFsFile_ReportFailure(SOLIDSYSLOG_FILE_ERROR_CLOSE_FAILED, result);
         }

Update AnOwedCloseFatFsNoLongerKnowsLetsTheOpenProceed to assert this close event with FR_INVALID_OBJECT instead of expecting no handler call.

🧩 Analysis chain

🏁 Script executed:

#!/bin/bash
fd '^SolidSyslogFatFsFile\.c$'
ast-grep outline Platform/FatFs/Source/SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c --items all
sed -n '1,310p' Platform/FatFs/Source/SolidSyslogFatFsFile.c
ast-grep outline Tests/FatFs/SolidSyslogFatFsFileTest.cpp --items all
rg -n -C 5 'FR_INVALID_OBJECT|CloseOwed|Owed|owed|Refused|Destroy|CloseFail' Tests/FatFs/SolidSyslogFatFsFileTest.cpp
rg -n -C 5 'close|Close|FF_FS_LOCK' docs/platforms/fatfs/index.md

Length of output: 23117

@DavidCozens The inspected code addresses the original FR_INVALID_OBJECT finding.

  • Close clears IsOpen regardless of the f_close result.
  • FR_OK and FR_INVALID_OBJECT leave no close owed.
  • Before reusing the file object, Open settles any owed close. If settlement fails, Open returns false without calling f_open and keeps the close owed.
  • Cleanup attempts an owed close once more.
  • The tests cover the reported state transitions. The FatFs page documents the FF_FS_LOCK consequence.

I inspected the source and test assertions. I did not run the tests. No further change is needed for this finding.
