Purpose

Part of #966. block_lifecycle.feature inspected STORE_PATH_PREFIX*.log on the machine running Behave. On FreeRTOS and VxWorks 6.4 the store is on a volume Behave cannot see, so the recorded set was empty, "block file 00 has been disposed" found no host file, and both scenarios passed without checking anything.

Change Description

Follows the decision recorded on the issue.

  • BddTargetBlockFiles_Print in Bdd/Targets/Common walks block indexes 0 to max-blocks - 1, asks the pack's own File whether each <prefix>NN.log exists, and prints one BLOCKS: 00 01 line. The name shape mirrors SolidSyslogFileBlockDevice, which keeps it private; the harness restates it rather than Core exporting a formatter for the test harness alone.
  • BddTargetInteractive_Run takes a blocks handler beside switch and set. The loop cannot answer itself: the File and prefix belong to the target, and the walk has to be serialised against the Service task's drain. The FreeRTOS pipeline's handler holds lifecycleMutex; the VxWorks 6.4 handler holds loggerLock. Linux and Windows pass NULL.
  • The three block-file steps share one existing_block_indexes helper returning a set of two-digit indexes. Hosts glob the prefix; REMOTE_STORE_TARGETS send blocks and parse the reply. The positive step polls up to CONDITION_TIMEOUT_SECONDS, because on QEMU the Dispose follows the acknowledged send asynchronously; the negative step still asserts once. The positive step also requires a non-empty listing, so a wrong prefix or an unmounted volume cannot read as a disposal.
  • REMOTE_STORE_TARGETS is a second tuple rather than a reuse of NO_PROCESS_MODEL_TARGETS: same members today, a different fact.
  • The feature file is unchanged; the scenario count is unchanged.

The VxWorks 6.4 handler is coded here so blocks is not silently ignored there, but it has not been run on the testbed. The issue's second slice is that runner session; this PR therefore does not close #966.

Test Evidence

  • BddTargetTests: five new tests for BddTargetBlockFiles (none, one, gaps, the max-blocks bound, two-digit indexes) and two for the blocks dispatch (handler called once, NULL handler ignored). 178 tests pass in the gcc image.
  • block_lifecycle.feature passes on Linux (host glob path) and on FreeRTOS-on-QEMU (freertos-cross, console path), both run locally.
  • Mutation check on FreeRTOS: with the handler forced to claim every block present, the disposal scenario fails with still present: ['00', '01', '02', '03'], so the step reads the target's reply rather than the host.
  • freertos-cross and freertos-cross-lwip build the BDD targets with no warnings; clang-format and markdownlint clean.
  • A first local FreeRTOS run failed on "receives 5 messages" with a block evicted. That was the tunables-mirror clobber (a later host configure had rewritten solidsyslog_tunables.py); reconfiguring the cross preset cured it. Not a defect in this change.

Areas Affected

Bdd/Targets/Common (new module, interactive loop, FreeRTOS pipeline), Bdd/Targets/VxWorks64, Bdd/Targets/Linux and Bdd/Targets/Windows (call site only), the three cross CMake lists and the VxWorks makefile, Bdd/features/steps/syslog_steps.py, Tests/Bdd/Targets, the FreeRTOS target README.

Walkthrough

BDD targets now list existing block-file indexes through a blocks command. Lifecycle steps use the command for FreeRTOS and VxWorks 6.4. Other targets continue to inspect host log files.

Changes

Block-file lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Block listing and interactive command
Bdd/Targets/Common/BddTargetBlockFiles.*, Bdd/Targets/Common/BddTargetInteractive.*, Tests/Bdd/Targets/BddTargetBlockFilesTest.cpp, Tests/Bdd/Targets/BddTargetInteractiveTest.cpp, Tests/Bdd/Targets/CMakeLists.txt
The shared printer checks indexes from 00 to 99 and reports existing files in a BLOCKS: line. The interactive runner invokes an optional callback for blocks. Tests cover output formatting and callback handling.
Target handlers and build wiring
Bdd/Targets/Common/BddTargetFreeRtosPipeline.c, Bdd/Targets/VxWorks64/BddTargetVxWorks64.c, Bdd/Targets/{CmsisLwip,FreeRtos,FreeRtosLwip}/CMakeLists.txt, Bdd/Targets/VxWorks64/bddtarget-vxworks64.mk, Bdd/Targets/{Linux/main.c,Windows/BddTargetWindows.c}, Bdd/Targets/FreeRtos/README.md, Tests/VxWorks64/CMakeLists.txt
FreeRTOS and VxWorks 6.4 handlers print block indexes from the active store file or null-file fallback. Target build lists include the shared printer. Linux and Windows pass a null callback. The FreeRTOS README documents the command.
Lifecycle steps query remote stores
Bdd/features/steps/syslog_steps.py
The lifecycle steps request and parse block indexes on FreeRTOS and VxWorks 6.4. Other targets use host-file globbing. Disposal checks poll for the index to disappear and then require at least one remaining block.

The new lifecycle check can succeed without observing a target block file; require a non-empty initial listing before relying on the result.

Explanation

Issue #966 requires target-side block-file checks for FreeRTOS and VxWorks 6.4, unchanged feature scenarios, shared console handling, and host/target lookup paths. BddTargetBlockFiles_Print checks the block index range through SolidSyslogFile_Exists; both target handlers serialise the check and dispatch blocks; syslog_steps.py uses host globbing or the target reply; and focused tests cover enumeration and dispatch. The reported VxWorks runner session is runtime acceptance, not a coding requirement for this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #966. The common C handler, FreeRTOS and VxWorks wiring, host/target step logic, build entries, documentation, and focused tests all support target-side block-file verification. No unrelated behaviour is established by the reviewed summary.

- Line 66: Extract the repeated PrintBlockFiles string comparison into a CHECK_*
macro that clearly names the block-list assertion, then use it in all five
tests. Keep the underlying assertion expanded at each test call site so failures
retain the test’s file and line.

🟡 Minor · Reject an empty initial block listing. · syslog_steps.py:815-827

Bdd/features/steps/syslog_steps.py:815-827
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject an empty initial block listing.

The active scenario records the initial set before sending messages. An empty BLOCKS: reply produces set(), and the later context.recorded_block_files - existing_block_indexes(context) assertion then passes when the later reply is also empty. The scenario can therefore pass without proving that a target block file exists.

The block store acquires block 00 during cold start, so require a non-empty initial listing here.

Suggested fix
 def step_record_block_files(context):
     context.recorded_block_files = existing_block_indexes(context)
+ assert context.recorded_block_files, (
+ "Expected the initial block listing to contain at least one block file"
+ )
