refactor: the Null SolidSyslog instance carries no record slot - #1058
Conversation
Guards the record slot moving out of the instance: two instances from the pool each hold a record for a down sender, and the first still sends its own. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The record Service works on moves out of struct SolidSyslog into a static array beside the pool, one row per entry. Each instance holds a pointer to its row and the row's capacity; Cleanup leaves NULL and 0, so the exhaustion fallback costs the struct alone. The SOLIDSYSLOG_POOL_SIZE doc comment now states the per-instance record cost. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…try sent From the pre-push review: the test now counts each sender's sends, so it cannot pass with the second Create on the fallback or with a retry that sends nothing. The slot comment says what Create and Cleanup do with the storage, and the override header names the test the pool size enables. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughRecord buffers now use separate static storage for pool entries. Each logger stores its buffer pointer and capacity, and record reads use that capacity. A new test checks that two logger instances can hold and retry separate failed records. ChangesRecord storage

MISRA C:2012 Rule 8.9 (advisory, enforced by the cppcheck lane): an object referenced from a single function is defined at block scope. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
From CodeRabbit: service the second instance too, so the test checks that each instance keeps and retries its own record, not only the first. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
cppcheck variableScope: the scope of the block-scope array could be reduced to the branch of SolidSyslog_Create that uses it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Closes #1057
What changed
struct SolidSysloginto a static array of one row per pool entry, defined in the branch ofSolidSyslog_Createthat hands a slot out (MISRA 8.9, cppcheckvariableScope). Each instance holds a pointer to its row and the row's capacity, which Create passes in throughSolidSyslog_Initialise.RecordCapacityinstead ofsizeof(self->Record).SOLIDSYSLOG_POOL_SIZEdoc comment says each instance costs a record slot. "A small bookkeeping struct" had been stale since refactor: S43.06 Service holds a record it has taken from the buffer until it has dealt with it #1019.No behaviour changes.
RAM
Measured with
sizeon the gcc debug build (x86-64) at the default 480 B cap:.bssinSolidSyslogStatic.c.ofalls from 1,305 B to 897 B. The figure includes the host's alignment padding, which accounts for 24 B of the difference between the file-scope and block-scope placements of the array. Each pool entry gains a pointer and asize_t(16 B on a 64-bit target, 8 B on 32-bit), against a whole record slot removed from the fallback. The fallback's slot was accepted as a cost in #1019. The 0.3.0 dry run of the example then put it at 508 B of the 1,132 B above baseline at the
loggerstage.Tests
EachInstanceHoldsItsOwnRecordinSolidSyslogServiceHeldRecordTest.cpp: two pooled instances each hold a record for a down sender, and each one's retry sends its own record.CHECK_RETRY_SENTcounts each sender's calls, so the test cannot pass if the second Create lands on the fallback or if a retry sends nothing. At pool size 1 (debug) it exits, following the existing two-instance tests. It runs undertunable-override-debug(pool size 3), which is CI's unit lane.first, but wasother"), and no other test fails.Review findings
A whole-branch review before the first push raised seven findings. Four are fixed: the two gaps in the new test above, the slot comment not saying what Create and Cleanup now do with the storage, and
TunableOverrides.hnot naming the test the pool size enables.Three are declined:
RecordCapacitycould be derived from whetherRecordis NULL. It is kept because NULL paired with the message cap would be a false bound, while NULL paired with 0 is a true one.FallbackLogSilentlyDropsTheMessageruns Service on the fallback. A 1-byte static with capacity 0 would remove the dependency, if that is preferred.docs/hardening-path.mdsays "the record slot in the instance". That is still true at the level the page speaks, one slot per instance, and the page is being rewritten under docs: bring the documentation up to date for 0.3.0 #1055.CI round 1: the cppcheck lane flagged MISRA 8.9 on the array at file scope, and it moved into
SolidSyslog_Create. CodeRabbit's one finding, that the test checked only the first instance's retry, is fixed.CI round 2: cppcheck's
variableScopeasked for a narrower scope still, and the array moved into the branch ofSolidSyslog_Createthat hands a slot out. The build-time cppcheck pass was run locally before that push.Follows from this
The stage 3 cost in
docs/hardening-path.md, as rewritten for #1055, should count one record slot rather than two.Testing
