Load OPDS covers with the catalog's credentials - #28
Conversation
Covers were loaded by the webview with a plain <img>, which sends no Authorization header, so catalogs behind a login (Calibre-Web with anonymous browsing off, COPS...) answered 401 and only the title placeholder showed. - Add an opds_image command that fetches the image with the catalog's Basic/Bearer auth and returns it as a data: URL. - Browse covers go through it for authenticated catalogs, only once they near the screen (IntersectionObserver), like loading="lazy". - Downloads from such catalogs keep a 120px JPEG data: URL as their cover, since the downloads list has no credentials. Restrict catalog credentials to approved image origins.
OPDS 2 image links resolve absolute URLs without restricting their origin. needsAuthedImage then sends any HTTP(S) cover URL to opds_image, which applies the catalog credentials before the initial request. Validate the destination against the catalog origin or an explicit allowlist before applying auth. Redirect handling does not protect this initial request.

Limit image bytes before collecting and encoding them.
When an image endpoint sends a very large body, resp.bytes() collects the entire body. Base64 encoding then adds another large allocation. Concurrent Browse covers can exhaust memory on a mobile device. Read with a byte limit and reject oversized responses, including responses without Content-Length. (github.com)

Bound the authenticated-image cache.
When a reader browses new covers, each data URL remains in cache after its 10-minute TTL: memo removes an expired entry only if that same key is read again. Cover images therefore accumulate for the app’s lifetime and can exhaust memory during extended browsing. Evict expired image entries or give image results a bounded cache.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not hold the book download behind a slow cover.
If an authenticated cover request stalls, await storedCover(...) prevents download_book from starting until that request times out. The download shows no transfer progress during that wait. Give cover processing a short, bounded wait and continue the download with cover: null when it expires.

# Conflicts: # app/src/Browse.jsx # app/src/catalogs.test.js
Problem
OPDS feeds, searches and downloads go through Rust with the catalog's
Authorizationheader, but covers are loaded by the webview with a plain<img src>, which sends no credentials. Catalogs behind a login answer 401 on their cover URLs, so Browse only shows the title/author placeholder.Seen with Calibre-Web with anonymous browsing off: its feed does declare
http://opds-spec.org/imageand.../image/thumbnaillinks, but/opds/cover/<id>requires Basic auth.Changes
opds_imagecommand (opds/mod.rs,books.rs): fetches an image with the catalog's Basic/Bearer auth and returns it as adata:URL (rejects non-image/*responses).Browse.jsx):Coveruses it for catalogs with auth (needsAuthedImage); catalogs without auth keep the direct<img loading="lazy">. Fetches start only when the cover nears the screen (IntersectionObserver, 300px margin), and results are memoized for 10 minutes like feeds.catis passed down throughCoverRail/Grid/Tile.data:URL (the downloads list shows it 40px wide and has no credentials). Public covers are stored as URLs as before; a failed fetch just leaves no cover.Testing
vitest run: all pass, with new tests forneedsAuthedImage, imageandstoredCover.vite buildandcargo checkpass.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
