dynamic_cast in constant evaluation requires public bases [GH #398] - #416
The run-time checks of a dynamic_cast ([expr.dynamic.cast]/9) require the operand to point to a public base class subobject of the most derived object (for a cast to a derived class or to the most derived class) and, for a cross-cast, the destination type to be an unambiguous public base class of the most derived type. The constant evaluator instead checked the accessibility of the base classes in the context of the cast (is_accessible_base_class), so casts that must yield a null pointer (or fail, for references) succeeded.
This changes both paths of do_constexpr_dynamic_cast:
For an operand that is a run-time constant address, the derivation path from the destination subobject to the operand, and the operand's and destination's base classes in the most derived class, must all be public derivations (has_public_derivation).
For an operand in interpreter storage, the walk toward the most derived object tracks whether every step is a public derivation; a matching derived subobject is accepted only if so, and the cross-cast case checks both the operand and the destination.
In addition, the derived-to-base shortcut for interpreter objects was dead code (its condition tested type_is(tp, tk_void) instead of !type_is(tp, tk_void)); that is fixed.
Tests: new changes/gh-398.sft.cpp; updated expectations of some imported tests that exercise these checks. The edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp recordings of these tests (which differ from the 64-bit ones only in a few target-specific values) were updated by applying the same changes, since those configurations were not run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Corrected dynamic_cast behavior during C++20 constant evaluation to account for public derivation paths in both the source and destination. Casts requiring an inaccessible base subobject now fail as expected: pointer casts produce nullptr, while invalid reference casts are rejected with a diagnostic. Casts through qualifying public base subobjects continue to work, including casts to the complete object.

Walkthrough
Constant-evaluated dynamic_cast checks now enforce public base-subobject relationships for runtime-address and interpreter-storage casts. Regression tests and expected compiler outputs cover successful casts and cases involving inaccessible or ambiguous base subobjects.

Summary
Runtime-address cast checks src/interpret.c
Runtime-address cast paths now check for public derivation from the operand base subobject and to the destination.
Interpreter-storage cast checks src/interpret.c
Interpreter-storage casts track public derivation while traversing base subobjects and check public paths for fallback casts.

C++20 tests cover casts involving public and private bases. Expected outputs cover inaccessible and ambiguous cast cases. C++26 tests cover virtual-base cases that are not currently constant-evaluable.
edgcpp/compiler#398 — The changes address the issue’s constant-evaluated downcast, most-derived cast, and cross-cast behavior involving inaccessible base subobjects.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#398] requires constant evaluation to enforce public-base runtime checks for downcasts, casts to the most-derived object, and cross-casts. src/interpret.c updates both runtime-address and interpreter-storage paths to track public derivation. The changes preserve null results for failed pointer casts and constant-evaluation failures for failed reference casts. gh-398.sft.cpp, gh-398-vbase.sft.cpp, and updated imported-test expectations provide automated coverage. The interpreter derived-to-base shortcut is also corrected.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within [#398]. The implementation, release note, regression tests, virtual-base coverage, and imported-test expectation updates all validate or document public-base handling for constant-evaluated dynamic_cast. Target-specific recordings concern the same tests. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated test change is identified. The excluded tests/expectations/edg_x86_64/imported.log file was not inspected, but its exclusion does not prevent this scope assessment.
