updates the --version output for the open source project,
drops the Edison Design Group Inc-specific "DEMO_VERSION_ID" configuration macro,
and combines all of this to improve CI times (optimizing things for the new merge queue based workflow).
In terms of CI optimizations:
we no longer run push checks where merge_queue checks would make them redundant (all changes go through merge queue)
we now cache equivalent testing results meaning textual updates that don't make it into the binary no longer retrigger a full CI test run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Build Improvements
Build and configuration details now use a consistent build stamp. A custom build identifier can replace the default date and time, including in precompiled-header compatibility information.
Linux runtime-library archives are created deterministically, and generated temporary names are more consistent across builds.
Version Information
Version output no longer includes the demonstration-version notice, and its copyright line now includes “and Contributors.”
Bug Fixes
Clearing pointer maps now resets their element count, preventing unnecessary table growth and increased memory use.
Documentation
Build documentation explains how custom identifiers affect version output and precompiled headers.
This change adds configurable build identifiers and deterministic output settings, updates compiler diagnostic fixtures, and revises CI workflow triggers, runner images, and test-result caching. It also resets the element count when Ptr_map::clear clears its entries.
CMake accepts EDG_BUILD_IDENTIFIER. Version and configuration output and PCH identification use build_stamp. Linux archive commands use deterministic options, generated C files remain in the object directory, and generated temporary names use per-file sequential IDs. Ptr_map::clear resets its element count.
Expected-output fixtures use concrete generated temporary identifiers and updated diagnostic locations across C and C++ tests. Some recorded compiler-output fixtures are removed.

Commit-message validation uses pull-request or merge-queue ranges. The affected workflows remove or broaden push triggers and filters.
CI inputs and runner environment .github/workflows/build-and-test-ci.yml, .github/workflows/strict-build-check.yml, dev_tools/docker/ci-runner/setup-scripts/install-software.sh
The prepare job hashes test inputs. CI jobs use updated runner images, builds set EDG_BUILD_IDENTIFIER=ci, and the runner image installs zstd.
Test-result and coverage caching .github/workflows/build-and-test-ci.yml
The GCC and i686 test jobs key cache records using configuration, test-input, and build-product hashes. Cache hits restore coverage and skip testing. Successful uncached runs save coverage and run metadata.

Reproducible Builds #426 — The pull request adds build-identifier support and deterministic build-output changes.
Suggested labels:infrastructure, bug
Suggested reviewers:nv-cmeerw, darkarc
Merge Risk: Low · up to 72f52
Relative include paths can break runtime-library builds, and unusually long build identifiers can cause initialization failures. Use absolute paths and bounded identifiers until these cases are fixed.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 72f52
The new test-result cache can preserve an incomplete validation run because process success does not necessarily mean every test completed successfully. Exact input keys limit reuse, but do not establish that the original run was complete. Build identity also introduces a documented responsibility to distinguish incompatible compiler builds.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The cache producer equates a successful harness exit plus a coverage file with a complete passing run. The harness can leave tests incomplete after cancellation or asynchronous errors without increasing its failure count. Previously this could misreport one run; the new persistent record can cause later matching runs to skip validation entirely. Exact cache keys prevent reuse for changed inputs, but do not establish completeness of the original result.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced persistence primarily affects CI validation evidence for matching configuration and input digests. The result cache contains coverage and metadata, not credentials or compiler executables. Cross-ref exposure depends on external cache-service authorization; repository documentation describes ref scoping, but that enforcement was not independently verified.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A test job that ends without recording a failure can yield a zero harness exit even when a test did not complete. If coverage exists, the new producer can persist that result and later exact-hit consumers skip testing. This weakens the validation guarantee; no actual poisoned cache, cross-PR exploit, or privilege gain was demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The workflow declares contents: read, disables persisted checkout credentials, restores only an exact cache key, and separates configurations in that key. These controls limit repository authority and accidental result substitution, but do not prove that a cached producer run completed all selected tests.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The harness failure-accounting behavior predates this PR. Persisting its success status changes failure containment: a transient incomplete run can become reusable evidence instead of requiring another execution on the next matching run. Concurrent cancellation controls do not substitute for a completion invariant inside the producer.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make cache publication depend on an explicit complete-run result that fails closed for killed tests, unhandled job exceptions, and incomplete execution. Treat coverage presence as payload availability, not proof of test completeness.

RE 1:
It still is a (map of) pointers to unique IDs ... so I think the existing name is fine (I prefer it personally to just unique_id_map). A counter-proposal would be perhaps calling it temporary_to_id?
That also removes the slight UUID implication/suggestion.
RE 2:
It's a good question ... that would surface it more visibly, but I'm not sure that buys us anything. I think I'd prefer to keep this an implementation detail unless anyone asks for that to be controllable by an_il_to_str_output_control_block.

Counter-counter-proposal ;-) : ptr_to_id_map ?
I suggested making it part of an_il_to_str_output_control_block to ensure that there is no interference between unrelated output streams. I'm fine delaying that to another issue/change though.

I suggested making it part of an_il_to_str_output_control_block to ensure that there is no interference between unrelated output streams.
One risk is that different output streams could come up with different ids or reuse the ids. I think we want interference to keep things distinct as needed (as they would've been previously ptr X always was X, having a per output stream X -> Y could result in an actual functional change in the most extreme case).
I think we should leave this alone on both counts after further thought. It's a pointer to a translation-unit level unique id given the same IL temporary pointer.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Normalize paths in runtime-library debug information.
obj_dir is under PROJECT_BINARY_DIR, and -g reaches the native compiler. Builds in different directories therefore record different paths in their objects and produce different archives. Map both build and source paths to stable paths when compiling the runtime library. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

I've attached a patch file that would fix eviction of SoftFloat. There's also no specific eviction going on here, but GitHub will send you an email if your cache is oversize. They'll just apply FIFO eviction which is why you need to avoid that from happening to SoftFloat.
I don't think the SoftFloat thing is worth worrying about. We have a cache hit on that for every strict build that hits main and our caches are relatively small at the moment (< 100MB out of the 10GB default cache size).

Resolve relative EDG_CINCLDIR entries against the original build directory.
add_edg_cpp_rt_obj_file now runs eccp from ${obj_dir}. EDG_CINCLDIR entries reach eccp unchanged as --sys_include= values, and eccp resolves a relative --sys_include= path against its working directory. A relative entry in the environment variable therefore resolves against the object cache directory instead of the directory where the runtime target is defined. Headers in that location are no longer found, and the runtime library build fails. Absolute entries are not affected, and the default edg-scrape-compiler output is absolute.
