break in a statement expression in a switch condition [GH #434] - #436
In GNU modes, a break inside a statement expression in the condition of a switch was bound to that switch instead of to the enclosing loop or switch. GCC and Clang bind it to the enclosing one. A case or default label in such a condition was likewise attached to the inner switch. With this change, it's now diagnosed as a transfer of control into a statement expression, as in GCC.
The front end now flags a switch statement's stack entry while its condition is scanned, so the search for the target of a break, case or default skips that switch. In the interepreter, a switch now completes a break only if control entered its body. A break executed in its condition goes on to the enclosing statement.
The interpreter now uses shared pending-transfer state and resumable work for control flow, loop execution, and switch-case entry. Cleanup handles transfers and object lifetimes. The PR adds regression tests and release notes for constant-evaluation behavior.
Changes: Constant-evaluation control flow

Summary
Shared transfers and unwinding src/interpret.c, tests/tests/changes/gh-401.sft.cpp, tests/tests/regressions/*, tests/tests/imported/clang/cpp/SemaCXX/.constant-expression-cxx14.rto/*, src/pending_changes/gh-401-*
Interpreter work propagates pending transfers through cleanup and routine completion. Tests cover statement expressions, loop exits, destructor behavior, and related constant-evaluation results.
Loop work handles setup, tests, increments, body execution, and cleanup. Condition variables and range-loop variables are destroyed at statement or iteration boundaries represented in the tests.
Switch processing selects a case and enters eligible nested statements, including supported loop bodies. Switch-condition scanning excludes that switch when resolving labels and break targets. Tests cover case entry and statement expressions in switch conditions.

edgcpp/compiler#419: Introduces pending-transfer handling and resumable loop and switch execution that this PR extends.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 941b0
This change reworks how break, continue, return and switch entry work during constant evaluation, and it fixes several earlier lifetime and control-flow bugs. A few edge cases in GNU statement expressions can still produce a wrong constant value or a spurious fallthrough diagnostic. Fix the loop-test break handling and the leaked pending transfers before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 941b0
The change alters how nested control flow and cleanup interact, without an identified increase in privileges or access. Residual risk is low because unusual failure paths were assessed statically rather than exhaustively validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant input is source code submitted for constant evaluation, and the affected execution context is the hosting compiler process. The changed state belongs to interpreter invocations; the inspected changes do not establish a new service, tenant, credential or deployment authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Destructor execution still checks that the callee is constexpr, defined and interpretable, and rejects execution when the existing cost limit is exceeded before pushing its body. Transfer propagation does not remove these checks.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — During failure or pending transfer, the work runner discards ordinary work but retains work requiring cleanup. It enforces the nested-work stack floor and clears a transfer when nested interpretation fails, supporting containment of aborted evaluation.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #434 requires a break in a GNU statement expression used as a switch condition to target the enclosing loop or switch. src/statements.c marks the switch while scanning its condition, so target lookup skips that switch. The interpreter changes propagate the pending break until the entered target completes it. tests/tests/changes/gh-434.sft.cpp checks enclosing-switch, enclosing-loop, nested-switch, constant-evaluation, and runtime behavior.

Clear pending transfers from recovering evaluations.
run_pushed_work returns FALSE when pushed work leaves a control transfer pending. The __builtin_constant_p branch converts that result to zero_int and continues without clearing ips->transfer. do_assumption_check also treats a failed evaluation as non-fatal and returns TRUE without clearing the transfer.
A break or continue in a GNU statement expression can target the enclosing loop. Clear the pending transfer in both recovery branches.

Stop loop and switch transfers at the function boundary.
routine_body_completed consumes only ctk_return. A pending ctk_loop_break, ctk_switch_break or ctk_continue therefore leaves the callee with ips->failed still FALSE. It then passes through process_call_work, process_dtor_work and process_ctor_work into the caller. These transfers can never correctly leave a function, so interpretation should fail at this point. That turns any binding error, such as the loop-test case above, into a clean "not a constant expression" result instead of a wrong value. ctk_throw must still propagate.

A break in a loop test or increment leaves the wrong loop.
The front end binds break in a GNU statement expression to the current while, do-while, or for loop. The interpreter does not consume ctk_loop_break after eval_loop_test or eval_loop_increment. The pending transfer can therefore escape to an enclosing loop instead of completing the target loop.
Apply the same ctk_loop_break handling used for a switch condition after the while test, do-while test, for increment, and for test. Preserve the existing ctk_continue behavior until its required semantics are established.

Preserve switch visibility for in_switch_statement.
A plain condition declaration does not invoke this statement-only handler. However, a GNU statement expression in the switch condition can contain an empty statement with [[fallthrough]]. apply_fallthrough_attr then sees in_switch_statement() == FALSE and reports ec_fallthrough_not_in_switch.
Keep condition skipping for break, case, and default lookup, but use a separate predicate for apply_fallthrough_attr that does not skip the active switch.

Fixes #434.
In GNU modes, a
breakinside a statement expression in the condition of a switch was bound to that switch instead of to the enclosing loop or switch. GCC and Clang bind it to the enclosing one. Acaseordefaultlabel in such a condition was likewise attached to the inner switch. With this change, it's now diagnosed as a transfer of control into a statement expression, as in GCC.The front end now flags a switch statement's stack entry while its condition is scanned, so the search for the target of a break, case or default skips that switch. In the interepreter, a switch now completes a
breakonly if control entered its body. Abreakexecuted in its condition goes on to the enclosing statement. This change depends on #419.
