When Fabric Fades
Contributor: Stephen Reid, Creative Director of Threadbare
Summary: This Threadbare Narrative Exemplar is designed to provide support for narrative creation through the medium of scientific observations. The narrative example depicts the impact of The Void on the populace of Threadbare through direct contact, , through the lens of Threadbare character - Dr. Lint Reweaver of The Institute of Material Integrity, Frays End University, Fray’s End. Contributors can use this form of narrative delivery as a source of lore creation and story setting when creating game assets and making additional narrative contributions.
Theme(s): Memory, decay, community collapse, unseen threats
When Fabric Fades - Weaveologies of Void Contact by Dr Lint Reweaver of The Institute of Material Integrity, Frays End University
- Type: Medical Report
- Date/Location: Threadbare
- Source: ‘When Fabric Fades - Weaveologies of Void Contact’ by Dr. Lint Reweaver of The Institute of Material Integrity, Frays End University, Fray’s End.
- Medical Report: Weaveologies of Void Contact (Case Series #44A–C)
- Compiled by: Dr. Lint Reweaver, Chief Weaveologist
- Classification: Restricted – Void Contagion (VCON) 3
Recent Void incursions rising from the southern regions of Threadbare have resulted in an alarming rise in contact weaveologies. Subjects exposed to active strains of Void Creep, Blister, or Bloom present with progressive symptoms suggesting not infection in the biological sense, but a kind of ‘unmaking’, a systemic unraveling of corporeal and metaphysical thread.
- Patient: Weaver, male, aged 342.
- Location: Medical Camp - Song Sanctuaries
- Exposure: Contact with creeping fissure at the edge of the Song Sanctuaries.
- Initial Presentation: Localized discoloration, clothes and skin appeared desaturated, losing all hue within hours. Texture of the affected area shifted from solid to hazy, with visible fading under magnification. Transparency increased with time and exposure.
- Progression: Subject reported numbness, followed by “a pulling from within. Fabric samples reveal structural breakdown of connective fibers, replaced by a “dark air” with the tar-like void residue around the edges, spreading - non-organic, non-reactive to heat or light, empty yet not. Observe what look like stars within.
- Outcome: Subject appears to have fully unraveled within 72 hours.
Note - My team cannot remember who the subject was or what they looked like. Furniture in the room is also gone, and there appears to be blistering on the wall. Containment protocols failed. Medical camp abandoned.
- Patient: Lantern Lighter, female, aged 229.
- Location: Medical Camp - Parable Pass.
- Exposure: Inhalation of vapor from ruptured Void Blister.
- Initial Presentation: Immediate vertigo and loss of temporal orientation. Subject described “trying to remember something important, but then it was gone”.
- Neurological Findings: Rhythmic brain activity fading, replaced by irregular blank intervals. Memory recall tests failed progressively until the subject ceased responding to stimuli altogether. Even books, as ward storytelling sessions seemed to be slowing progression of deterioration.
- Outcome: Patient gone when we returned from lunch, along with half the room. Containment protocols enacted and failed. Medical Camp abandoned.
- Patient: Quinn Quiltpatcher - Baker.
- Location: Found near the fringes of Bloom eruption at Forgotten Forests.
- Condition on Discovery: Form entirely transparent, as though made of night. Skin translucent, faintly glowing threads visible beneath the surface, oscillating before fading completely.
- Observations: Systematic unweaving observed, patient diminished. Instruments recorded a gradual loss of mass without material breakdown. Instruments lost, location unknown.
- Interpretation: Complete severance from Memory, Imagination, and Spirit Threads, entity ceased to exist in both memory and record. Only name tag remained legible, though no such name appears in census archives.
- Outcome: Unmade. Erased?
Note: Three of the team have disappeared. Possibly quit. Though I can’t remember which ones, and so cannot contact them.
Containment protocols failed. Medical Camp abandoned.
The Void appears to unravel people and creatures, disassembles matter one stitch at a time, memory, and meaning alike become void.
While it appears to act as an organism, or toxin, it presents more as a curse, or as absence given form.
Traditional medicine cannot counter this; only reweaving, acts of memory, care, and connection show any measurable resistance in early exposures.
Further research requires containment protocols that prevent emotional detachment during observation. Apathy appears to hasten spread, while reading to patients appears to slow it down.
