Summary

On macOS, the pointer drawn on a recording sits above the place that was actually clicked, so the click looks like it landed outside a field or off a button. In a window capture the pointer never lines up with the control that received the click. Cursor positions are global screen points normalized against a frame reported separately from the pixels ScreenCaptureKit writes. On macOS 26 that frame was the window rectangle, or the rectangle stored with a system-picker choice, and that rectangle sits below the filter content rect the output buffer is sized from, so the pointer is drawn above the click. Window takes also left the display bounds or the picker frame in charge: picker window ids never switched to the recorded rect, and samples taken before the helper reported bounds stayed on the wrong origin.

The capture helper now reports the filter content rect as the capture frame on macOS 14 and later, and keeps the source frame only on macOS 13. Window recordings, including windows chosen in Apple's picker, seed normalization from the source frame before the first cursor sample, then replace it with the helper's capture bounds and rebase samples already stored. Display recordings keep normalizing against the display bounds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved cursor positioning in macOS window recordings, including captures started from the source picker and older window sources.
    • Cursor coordinates now align more reliably with captured window content, including near window edges and when capture bounds change during recording.
    • Display recordings continue to use display-based cursor positioning.
    • Improved cursor visibility handling when the pointer briefly or continuously leaves a window, including when capture bounds are updated.

Walkthrough

macOS capture targets now use filter-derived content bounds for cursor normalization. Window captures seed and update cursor bounds from helper data. The cursor session retains screen-space points so it can recalculate recorded samples when bounds change.

Explanation

Issue #1130 requires the recorded pointer to align with the native pointer. Window captures now seed the source frame before sampling and replace it with valid helper bounds. The cursor session rebases stored screen points when the bounds change. The helper uses matching CoreGraphics window bounds for one-window filters on supported macOS versions and uses the filter content frame otherwise. Display captures retain display-based normalization. Tests cover bounds mapping, replacement, rebasing, and fallback behavior.

Tried this branch on macOS 26.3 (MacBook Air 15", 1710x1107) and the pointer was still drawn above my clicks when I recorded a Safari window picked through Apple's picker. Two things I found:

  1. updateCaptureBounds is called from handlers.ts but nothing implements it, so the optional call does nothing. That's also why the new test "rebases samples collected before the authoritative bounds arrive" fails on this branch (session.updateCaptureBounds is not a function).

  2. For a window from the picker, includedWindows.first.frame and filter.contentRect both give me y=80 for a maximised Safari window, but CGWindowList has it at y=34, which is where the pixels and the cursor actually are. So switching to contentRect doesn't help here, everything ends up 46pt too high. Looking up kCGWindowBounds by window id and using that for window captures fixed it for me. A plain window: source already got y=34 from contentRect, so that path was fine.

I put both fixes on top of this branch, 2 commits, +48/-5: Lasserich/openscreen@f0d8c29...fix/1130-picker-window-frame
Feel free to cherry-pick them into this PR. The cursor and ipc tests pass, tsc is clean, and on a real recording the cursor samples now land exactly where the pointer was.

Thanks for tackling #1130. Two blockers:

  1. updateCaptureBounds is called in handlers.ts but never implemented: MacNativeCursorRecordingSession and the CursorRecordingSession interface don't have it. The optional call compiles to nothing at runtime, the new "rebases samples…" test fails with session.updateCaptureBounds is not a function, and samples taken before the helper reports its bounds are never rebased.
  2. For a window chosen in Apple's picker, filter.contentRect is not the window's on-screen origin. @Lasserich measured y=80 against y=34 in CGWindowList on macOS 26.3, so the pointer is still 46 pt too high.

@Lasserich posted two commits on top of this branch that fix both (implementation of updateCaptureBounds, and kCGWindowBounds by window id for window captures). Could you pull them in? CI is now approved on this branch. Once these are in, we will test on Apple Silicon.

Both are fixed in 4cd7fb4, which also merges current main into the branch.

  1. MacNativeCursorRecordingSession now implements updateCaptureBounds, and CursorRecordingSession declares it as optional. Samples recorded before the helper reports its bounds are rebased onto them, and later samples use the new bounds.
  2. For a one-window filter on macOS 15.2+, the capture frame now comes from kCGWindowBounds by window id instead of filter.contentRect. The window-vs-display check mirrors PickerSession.didPick, and display captures still use contentRect.

I made both changes directly on this branch rather than cherry-picking Lasserich's commits. On the merged tree, npm run lint, npx tsc --noEmit, npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit, npx vite build, npm run test and swift test all pass.

Thanks for the update! CI is approved and running. One thing before this can be merged: the repo only accepts rebase merges, and the branch now contains a merge commit from main, which blocks the merge button. Could you rebase onto main instead (git fetch upstream && git rebase upstream/main, then git push --force-with-lease)?

Thank you for working on this fix!

I have also experienced the cursor appearing above the actual click position in rendered recordings on macOS with OpenScreen 2.1.1.

This makes tutorial videos confusing because the pointer appears to miss the button or field that is actually being clicked.

I would really appreciate seeing this fix included in a packaged release once it is ready. Thank you to everyone contributing to OpenScreen!

The capture helper now reports the filter content rect as the capture
frame on macOS 14 and later, and keeps the source frame only on macOS
13. Window recordings, including windows chosen in Apple's picker, seed
normalization from the source frame before the first cursor sample, then
replace it with the helper's capture bounds and rebase samples already
stored. Display recordings keep normalizing against the display bounds.

Implement updateCaptureBounds on MacNativeCursorRecordingSession (optional
on CursorRecordingSession). Samples recorded before the helper reports its
bounds are rebased onto them, and later samples use the new bounds.

For a one-window capture filter on macOS 15.2+, take the capture frame from
kCGWindowBounds by window id instead of filter.contentRect, which sits below
the window's on-screen origin for a window chosen in Apple's picker.
Samples hidden against the seeded window frame stayed hidden after the
helper's frame arrived and contained them.

Thanks a lot @mvanhorn for this fix! We took it from here to finish it: rebased onto main without the merge commit (the repo is rebase-only), kept your commits as they were, and added a small follow-up for the last CodeRabbit thread. Next we're checking it on a real Mac, for a display and for a window picked in Apple's picker.

Clear activeMacCaptureBounds when native macOS start fails.

If native start fails after the bounds are seeded, a later editable-overlay session can use the stale window bounds to compute cx and cy. This can record incorrect cursor positions and visibility, but the inspected path does not directly crash or disable the cursor session.
