Summary

An unreadable camera start could silently drop an entire screen clip. Export could then report success and publish an empty or incomplete MP4.

This PR rejects unreadable camera starts and zero-frame timelines, while preserving normal audio/video tail tolerance. It also validates the completed MP4 before replacing the destination: a positive render count does not prove that the file contains playable video.

Behavior

  • Clip-start seeks reuse seek_to_or_last, bounded to a 0.5-second tail margin. Larger gaps fail; clips just beyond their declared end retain the existing skip behavior.
  • Screen-only clips use screen time for the stand-in decoder and report screen errors. Primary-screen seek errors now include the clip number and source.
  • Windows, macOS and Linux MP4 exporters close the staged file, reopen it with FFmpeg and software-decode until the first displayable frame. Discard-marked preroll is decoded for reference state, but discarded frames do not satisfy validation.
  • The validation runs inside the existing staged-output transaction, before rename. Failure or cancellation removes the partial output and leaves an existing destination untouched.
  • GIF retains the shared timeline's zero-frame protection. MP4 validation does not alter frame inspection or add a second full timeline render.

The 0.5-second margin cannot distinguish actual truncation inside that margin from a normal tail. Output validation checks for a displayable first frame; it is not a full-file corruption scan.

Review follow-up

The initial maintainer feedback about tail clips, frame inspection and screen error wording is addressed in 0ea00920.

0049ed2b addresses the two CodeRabbit threads: decoded-output validation before publication and missing context on primary-screen seek errors. Missing documentation on the seek helper, empty-timeline test and staging internals was also added.

aa4a3086 addresses the incremental review finding: frame inspection now stops at the clip boundary before preparing clips beyond its requested range. A regression failed before the change and now passes for the last frame of a valid clip followed by a bad camera, an empty request, and a request that actually reaches the bad camera.

The macOS tail-only case previously produced one muxed sample with zero video duration and no decoded frames. It now fails validation and cannot replace the destination. This PR protects publication; it does not repair single-frame encoder timestamps.

Validation

Local macOS 15.7.1 / Apple Silicon; Rust 1.99.1, FFmpeg 8.1.2 LGPL SDK, pinned Node 22.22.1 / npm 10.9.4. All test media is synthetic.

  • Old-fail / new-pass: the new macOS singleton-tail regression failed before the guard because the export was published. It now passes for both absent and existing destinations, including partial-file cleanup.
  • Export timing integration: 10 passed, 1 failed. The unchanged macOS probe_frame_count stub causes the existing frame-count assertion to fail. The other tests cover MP4/GIF timing, tail/inspection behavior, real gaps, empty exports, cancellation and successful short H.264/HEVC exports. These tests require the opt-in fixtures and are not claimed as a complete native-suite pass.
  • Publication/cancellation unit tests: 9 passed, including malformed completed output and cancellation before validation.
  • Timeline unit tests: 10 passed.
  • Full JavaScript suite: 356 files passed; 4,966 tests passed, 2 skipped, no unhandled errors (npm run test -- --maxWorkers=2).
  • Native addon release compilation passed. Local staging used the existing SDK and library paths; no dependency, SDK source or build-script changes.
  • npm run docs:check: 37 files passed; git diff --check passed. Biome over tracked supported files checked 1,120 files with no errors, 25 warnings. Plain local npm run lint includes private diagnostic artifacts, so it is not claimed as passing.
  • Local Clippy could not run because the installed Rust toolchain lacks the component. No Clippy result is claimed.

Desktop smoke (0049ed2b; later changes affect frame inspection only)

Computer-use opened the same tail-only project with the rebuilt addon, selected an existing valid synthetic MP4 and confirmed the native replace prompt. The dialog reported validation failure, the destination SHA-256 remained unchanged, and no partial remained.

Without restarting the app, a valid four-second clip followed by a 10 ms tail exported successfully at 1080p/30. Independent ffprobe decoded 120 frames / 4.000 s at 1752 × 1080; full-file decoding completed without errors. The native walk reported 121 composed frames, so this is not claimed as exact muxed-frame-count coverage. Results are recorded in the manual checklist.

Reproduction

Generate screen_colors.mp4 and webcam_gray.mp4 as described in the header of crates/compositor/tests/export_timing.rs, then run:

# From crates/:
OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA="<fixture-directory>" cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --test export_timing -- --nocapture --test-threads=1
cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --lib export_control::tests
cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --lib timeline_walk::tests

Windows/Linux device runtime, the full native library suite and release packaging remain unverified on the latest revision. Earlier Windows testing and CI results belong to their respective earlier heads, not to aa4a3086.

Upstream CI for 0049ed2b passed, including Windows compilation, macOS arm64/Intel and Linux native tests, frontend build, type checks, lint and tests. The latest head is aa4a3086; its CI must be checked separately. The opt-in synthetic GPU export results above remain separate local evidence. Diagnostic artifact and Nix workflows still require maintainer approval; they are not claimed as passing.

Latest-head status: CI for aa4a3086, diagnostic artifact and Nix workflows report action_required: maintainer approval is required before they can run. This is not a passing result for the latest head. The prior 0049ed2b CI pass remains separately attributed above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Exports now report errors when a timeline contains no frames or a requested clip cannot provide its starting frame, instead of silently skipping clips.
    • MP4 exports are checked for a displayable frame before the result is published. Failed or cancelled exports preserve any existing destination and do not leave partial output.
    • Timeline recovery now tolerates only small gaps at clip starts, and frame inspection stops when the requested range is complete.
  • Documentation
    • Updated export guidance and manual test records.

Walkthrough

The timeline walk now rejects empty exports and reports errors when a clip cannot provide a readable start frame. It can use the last available frame when that frame is within 0.5 seconds of the requested start. MP4 export paths validate staged output before publishing it.

Clip-start seeking accepts the last available frame within the 0.5-second tolerance. Screen and camera seek failures produce contextual errors. Frame inspection stops when requested frames are exhausted. Tests cover tail behavior, empty exports, and destination preservation. Thanks for tracking this down, a header-only MP4 reported as a success is a real bug. The frames == 0 guard and the "camera ends before this clip starts" check look right to us.

One concern before this leaves draft: turning every null seek into bail! is broader than the bug.

  • Tail clips past the last video frame. Recording audio often outlasts the video by 12 ms to ~0.5 s (see the seek_to_or_last doc comment in pipeline_windows.rs / pipeline_macos.rs). A clip cut in that margin starts after the last screen frame. Today it is skipped; with this change the whole export fails. The same holds for the camera, since available_duration_sec is the stream's declared duration, not the last frame's pts.
  • render_frames shares walk_timeline, so frame inspection would now fail on such a clip too.
  • Message wording: when the clip has no camera, wdec is the stand-in decoder on the screen file, yet the error says "camera video".

Suggestion: keep skipping a clip whose start is within a small tolerance of the stream end (or go through seek_to_or_last), keep failing on a real gap, and add a regression test for that tail-clip case.

Thanks @songoao25, nice work on the follow-ups! 🙌

CI skips the export_timing tests because it has no media, so I ran them locally on Windows at 0ea0092, with OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA pointing to synthesized clips (screen_colors.mp4 with 4 × 1 s solid colours, webcam_gray.mp4 at 4 s, H.264 60 fps):

cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --test export_timing
test result: ok. 8 passed; 0 failed; 0 ignored

All 8 pass, including the new ones: unreadable camera, no-frames timeline, tail clips, and bounded tail recovery.

Looks good from here. Feel free to mark it Ready for review whenever you're happy with it.

Thanks, good catch. Updated in 0ea0092.

Clip-start seeks now use seek_to_or_last, but only accept a recovered frame within 0.5 s of the requested start. That preserves the normal tail margin without hiding a larger camera gap. Clips starting just beyond their declared end retain the existing skip behavior; zero-frame exports still fail. The screen stand-in now seeks at screen time and reports a screen error.

Added regressions for screen-only and camera tails, unknown-duration sources, render_frames, and short-tail recovery versus a real gap. The tail test failed before the change and passes now. All seven relevant native integration tests pass, as do the ten timeline unit tests and the full JavaScript suite. The existing macOS frame-count probe stub still fails its separate assertion; details are in the PR description.

I also exercised desktop export with a valid clip followed by a tail. The resulting MP4 decodes successfully. A tail-only, single-frame export exposed another timing limitation: one muxed sample but zero video duration. I've recorded that explicitly rather than claiming the export path is fully validated. This change does not address single-frame mux timing or Presenter Overlay capture compatibility (#1378).

The latest head (ea32d893, verification-log update only) is waiting for workflow approval. The code revision (0ea00920) passed upstream CI. Please approve the new runs when reviewing.

Thanks @songoao25! We measured this on macOS: exports are pixel-identical to main and export time is unchanged. The last step before merge is the two open CodeRabbit threads (output staging on failure, and the missing clip context on the screen seek error). Could you address or reply to them?

@EtienneLescot The original two threads are addressed in 0049ed2, and the incremental frame-inspection finding is addressed in aa4a308. Each thread has a reply with the implementation and regression coverage.

The publication guard now decodes the closed staged MP4 before any replacement. The tail-only case fails safely; desktop verification confirmed the existing MP4 stayed byte-for-byte unchanged, no partial remained, and normal export could be retried successfully in the same app session. Screen seek errors include clip/source context. Frame inspection now stops before preparing unrelated later clips once its requested range is complete.

Local results: 10 relevant export/inspection integration tests passed (the separate, unchanged macOS frame-count probe assertion still fails), 9 publication/cancellation tests passed, 10 timeline tests passed, and the full JavaScript suite passed. Short H.264 and HEVC exports pass the publication guard. The PR description has commands, desktop results and remaining limits.

CI passed on 0049ed2. The latest head aa4a308 reports action_required for CI, diagnostic artifact and Nix workflows; please approve those runs when reviewing. Review threads are left open for verification.

Consider a drop guard for the shared test directories.

These tests remove their output directories only after all assertions pass. A panic can leave out.mp4 and the directory under OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA. The TestDir helper in crates/compositor/src/export_control.rs shows an existing cleanup pattern.

This is optional test hygiene. No checked-in requirement or ordinary workflow failure makes it a merge blocker.

Major · Bound the future-frame case in seek_clip_start. · timeline_walk.rs:267-269

crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs:267-269
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Bound the future-frame case in seek_clip_start.

The check target - cur_time_sec() <= 0.5 also passes when the decoded frame is after target, because the difference is negative. On Windows and macOS, seek_to returns the first decoded frame whose timestamp is at least target minus half a time base. seek_to_or_last falls back to the last frame only when that result is null. When the requested start falls in a stream gap, the helper can therefore accept a frame several seconds after the clip start.

Make the check two-sided so that a future frame must also lie within the same bound:

Proposed fix
 unsafe fn seek_clip_start(decoder: &mut Decoder, target: f64) -> Result<bool> {
     let frame = decoder.seek_to_or_last(target)?;
-    Ok(!frame.is_null()
-        && target - decoder.cur_time_sec() <= CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC + 1e-6)
+    let current = decoder.cur_time_sec();
+    Ok(!frame.is_null()
+        && (target - current) <= CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC + 1e-6
+        && (current - target) <= CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC + 1e-6)
 }

Add a regression test with a requested start inside a multi-second gap. The test must confirm that the export fails instead of showing the later frame. Also confirm that a clip that ends just past the last frame still uses the last frame.

@EtienneLescot The last out-of-diff finding was valid: a start at 1.5 s inside a 0.983–3.000 s video gap accepted the frame at 3.0 s. I reproduced it before changing the check.

Since this PR has merged, the fix is in #1379. It bounds the start-frame timestamp in both directions, retains normal short-tail recovery, and tests screen/camera gaps, failure after an earlier valid clip, and destination preservation. Local export timing tests now pass 13/13; native library tests pass 467/467. The desktop gap case rejects cleanly, preserves the destination and allows a normal same-session retry.

The follow-up also implements the macOS frame-count probe so the existing timing test can complete. Windows/Linux runtime and Presenter Overlay capture compatibility remain separate validation boundaries.
