Report contract for consumers: 0.4.0 frozen, verdict matrix as data, corroboration keys — and the estate's Creusot lane - #67
findings[].semantic_fingerprint, recipe published, recomputed by validate-report
1. Envelope 0.5.0, and 0.4.0 frozen
Three keys are appended, nothing renamed or moved: findings[].semantic_fingerprint, counts.actionable, counts.demoted_speculative. Additive in both directions —
and the bump is taken anyway, because a consumer must be able to tell whether a
report carries the corroboration key at all (PLAN Appendix G: minor = an added key).
0.4.0 does not disappear:
schemas/scan-0.4.0.json is unmodified and byte-pinned by FROZEN_0_4_0_SCHEMA_BLAKE3, recomputed from disk by a test — an edit to the
frozen file fails the build, not a consumer;
pons validate-report still accepts 0.4.0 reports;
the version declared inside the document selects the schema, so a 0.4.0
declaration cannot smuggle in a 0.5.0 key, and an unknown version is refused
rather than validated against the nearest shape;
schemas/index.json lists every artifact with version, status and BLAKE3
digest; schemas/README.adoc states the freeze rule and how to add a version.
2. The severity × evidence matrix as data
schemas/verdict-matrix-1.0.0.json: all twelve (severity, evidence) cells with sarif_level, aggregate_weight, counts_toward_verdict, gate_eligible, count_bucket, demotion_suffix, plus both scales and the corroboration recipe.
Generated from crates/pons-core/src/verdict.rs, which is now the single home
of the SARIF level table, the SARIF rank table, the evidence-contract confidence
labels and the --fail-on rank (the SARIF reporter, evidence.rs and the CLI all
delegate to it). the_published_matrix_matches_the_code fails if the committed
file and the code disagree.
Two numbers that look alike are deliberately distinct: sarif_rank
(50/80/70/20) is Appendix E's attention rank; weight is what a class adds to
an aggregate — 0 for SPECULATIVE, so a guess stays visible and adds nothing.
3. Per-finding semantic fingerprint
BLAKE3 over pons-corroboration-v1, NUL, root-relative path, NUL, 1-based line,
NUL, evidence class. A site, not a finding: it ignores rule id, producer and
severity, so the grid can mark a pons finding and a panic-attack/Hypatia finding
at the same line as one corroborated site instead of double-counting the overlap. evidence_contract.records[].fingerprint keeps its other job (one finding, rule
id + whitespace-folded anchor) — both are identifiers, neither is proof of
semantic equivalence, and a SPECULATIVE key corroborates nothing.
validate-reportrecomputes the key rather than checking its shape, so a
producer cannot point a finding at an arbitrary site.
SPECULATIVE demotion, numerically
aggregate_weight 0 at every severity, counts.actionable excludes the demoted
bucket, the human report gains a verdict: line separating the two, and validate-report rejects a document whose actionable + demoted_speculative
does not account for counts.total, or whose demoted count disagrees with by_evidence.
Tests added
lib: matrix drift, 12-cell completeness, speculative cells weigh nothing at any
severity, rank ≠ weight, pinned key digest, rule-id independence, path/line/class
sensitivity, frozen-schema digest, 0.5.0 finding = 0.4.0 finding + one appended
key, counts accounting, index attestation;
pons-cli/tests/contracts.rs (through the binary): a 0.4.0-pinned report still
validates; a 0.4.0 declaration carrying a 0.5.0 key is rejected; an unknown
version is refused; a forged key is rejected; a speculative finding cannot be
promoted into the actionable count.
Not verified in this environment — please run before merge
No Rust toolchain and no crates.io access here, so cargo fmt, clippy, cargo test and tests/e2e.sh have not been run. What was checked: both JSON
Schemas accept/reject the right documents (jsonschema), the golden fingerprints
were recomputed independently, the matrix document was diffed field-by-field
against the Rust literal it is generated from, and tests/aspect_tests.sh passes.
Expect at most formatting noise; run just check.
Deliberately not changed
Accepted ADRs (docs/adr/0004, stating the report boundary at 0.4.0) and the
dated evidence records under docs/evidence/2026-10-25/ are left as the records
they are; the current boundary is documented in docs/EVIDENCE-CONTRACT.adoc,
Appendix G and schemas/.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
JSON scan reports now use schema version 0.5.0, with actionable and demoted-speculative counts and semantic fingerprints for findings.
Speculative findings are visually and numerically demoted: they do not contribute to actionable counts or verdicts, and appear as notes in SARIF.
A published severity-and-evidence matrix describes how findings are ranked and counted.
Human-readable reports now separate actionable findings from demoted speculative findings.
Bug Fixes
Report validation checks fingerprints and finding counts for version 0.5.0, and rejects unsupported versions and findings outside the scan root. Frozen version 0.4.0 reports remain supported.
Documentation
Updated report-version guidance and schema documentation.
The report contract advances to 0.5.0 with semantic fingerprints and separate actionable and demoted-speculative counts. Shared severity–evidence mappings define verdict, CLI and reporter behaviour. Validation supports current 0.5.0 reports and frozen 0.4.0 reports. The change also adds a Creusot verification workflow.
pons-core defines severity and evidence mappings, including zero aggregate weight and demotion for SPECULATIVE findings. CLI gating, confidence labels, human summaries and SARIF output use the shared mappings. The matrix publishes twelve severity–evidence combinations.
JSON reports add actionable and demoted_speculative counts and append a BLAKE3 semantic_fingerprint to each finding. The fingerprint uses the scheme, root-relative path, start line and evidence class. The 0.5.0 schema and report examples describe these fields.
Versioned validation and frozen 0.4.0 support crates/pons-core/src/report/validate.rs, crates/pons-cli/tests/contracts.rs, crates/pons-core/tests/golden/report-0.4.0.json, schemas/index.json, schemas/README.adoc, docs/COVERAGE-MIGRATION.adoc, README.adoc, docs/SCOPE.adoc, docs/PLAN.adoc
Validation selects a schema from the report’s declared version. It accepts frozen 0.4.0 reports and checks fingerprints, scan-root paths and count consistency for 0.5.0 reports. Tests cover unsupported versions, invalid fingerprints, count mismatches, outside-root findings and frozen-schema integrity.
Creusot verification lane .github/workflows/creusot-gate.yml, PROOF-PROGRESS.adoc, CHANGELOG.adoc, ci/yaml-ratchet.kyaml
A workflow calls the pinned reusable Creusot gate on pushes and pull requests to main. The documentation records that this tree has no obligations or claims and describes gate failure conditions.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 95dd1
The report 0.5.0 contract, the frozen 0.4.0 validation and the matrix publication look sound. Remaining items are minor: correct the inaccurate history claim and test name, repair the split documentation paragraph, and be aware that the pinned Creusot gate has gaps that matter only once proof obligations are added.

Point the schema validation test at 0.5.0
When the pons-core library tests run, published_json_schema_accepts_native_report_and_rejects_tier_promotion still loads the closed 0.4.0 schema and asserts that render() output is valid against it. After this version bump, the output declares 0.5.0 and contains the three new fields, so that assertion is guaranteed to fail; the test must load scan-0.5.0.json while the separate frozen-schema test continues covering 0.4.0.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Label the new schema as 0.5.0
The newly published schema constrains schema_version to 0.5.0 and is indexed as 0.5.0, but its JSON Schema title still identifies it as the 0.4.0 envelope. Schema documentation generators and validator UIs commonly display this annotation, so consumers inspecting the 0.5.0 contract receive contradictory version metadata.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Register the added JSON files in the format ratchet
The Format ratchet step in .github/workflows/format-policy.yml runs tests/format_ratchet.sh, which compares every tracked .json/.jsonl file with ci/json-ratchet.kyaml and fails on any unaccounted path. This commit adds schemas/index.json, schemas/scan-0.5.0.json, schemas/verdict-matrix-1.0.0.json, and crates/pons-core/tests/golden/report-0.4.0.json, but none is present in that closed inventory, so the required workflow will fail until all four receive canonical or declared-non-canonical entries.
Update published_json_schema_accepts_native_report_and_rejects_tier_promotion to the 0.5.0 schema.
This test is outside the changed lines, but the schema bump breaks it. It validates the output of crate::report::json::render(&fixture::report()) against schemas/scan-0.4.0.json.
render now emits schema_version: "0.5.0", counts.actionable, counts.demoted_speculative and findings[].semantic_fingerprint.
The frozen schema is closed with additionalProperties: false.
a_frozen_0_4_0_report_still_satisfies_the_frozen_schema in json.rs asserts that the frozen schema rejects the current document.
So assert!(validator.is_valid(&value)) at line 294 fails. Point the test at scan-0.5.0.json. The frozen schema already has coverage in json.rs and contracts.rs.

Route the gate through the shared policy for both halves of the check.
The new comment says the binary and the published matrix use the same gate. This holds only for the severity rank.
Line 445 (unchanged) still hard-codes f.evidence() != EvidenceClass::Speculative. The published gate_eligible column is derived from verdict::counts_toward_verdict. If someone changes one of them, the matrix and the binary disagree, and the_published_matrix_matches_the_code cannot detect it.
FailOn::rank (lines 96-102) is a second local 0/1/2 table. It is compared against fail_on_rank, so the two tables must stay equal by hand.
Use pons_core::verdict::counts_toward_verdict(f.evidence()) for the evidence check. Map FailOn to Severity and call fail_on_rank on both sides.

Match the frozen version explicitly in validator_for_version.
The comment says the dispatch is explicit. The code checks FROZEN_SCHEMA_VERSIONS.contains(&version). It then always returns the schema compiled from scan-0.4.0.json. If someone adds a second frozen version to FROZEN_SCHEMA_VERSIONS and forgets this function, the new version is validated against the 0.4.0 shape. That is the nearest-shape validation this function exists to prevent. schemas/README.adoc says to add an arm, but nothing enforces it. Match on "0.4.0" directly.

Reject absolute findings outside the scan root
When a 0.5.0 report uses an absolute scanned.root but an absolute location.file outside that root, relative_path falls back to the unchanged file path, so this check accepts a fingerprint containing a machine-specific absolute path. The report then passes validation despite the published contract requiring a root-relative key that survives checkout moves, preventing aggregators from reproducing stable keys; reject absolute paths that cannot be stripped from the root while continuing to allow already-relative paths.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Deduplicate actionable sites before publishing the aggregate
When two non-speculative rules fire on the same line in the same evidence class, their deliberately identical semantic_fingerprint values represent one corroborated site, but this calculation publishes both findings in counts.actionable. The matrix instructs aggregators to collapse such keys to one count, while this field is documented as the aggregate consumers should sum, so consumers relying on it will overcount precisely the overlaps this change is intended to remove; either count unique non-speculative fingerprints here or define this field as a raw finding count that must not be used for corroborated totals.
A repinning consumer needs three things from pons that were prose, derivable
only by reading the code, or absent. Each is now published, and each claim is
checked rather than asserted.
ENVELOPE 0.5.0, WITH 0.4.0 FROZEN
Three keys appended, nothing renamed or moved: findings[].semantic_fingerprint,
counts.actionable, counts.demoted_speculative. Additive in both directions, and
the bump is taken anyway so a consumer can tell whether a report carries the
corroboration key. 0.4.0 stays published, byte-pinned by
FROZEN_0_4_0_SCHEMA_BLAKE3 (recomputed from disk by a test) and by
schemas/index.json; pons validate-report still accepts 0.4.0 reports, and the
version declared *inside* the document selects the schema, so a 0.4.0
declaration cannot carry a 0.5.0 key. Unknown versions are refused rather than
validated against the nearest shape.
THE SEVERITY x EVIDENCE MATRIX IS DATA
schemas/verdict-matrix-1.0.0.json carries all twelve cells with sarif_level,
aggregate_weight, counts_toward_verdict, gate_eligible, count_bucket and
demotion_suffix, plus both scales and the key recipe. It is generated from
crates/pons-core/src/verdict.rs, which now owns the SARIF level and rank tables,
the evidence-contract confidence labels and the --fail-on rank, so the
published file cannot state a different number from the reporter; a drift test
fails if the committed file and the code disagree.
EVERY FINDING CARRIES A SEMANTIC FINGERPRINT
BLAKE3 over pons-corroboration-v1, the root-relative path, the 1-based line and
the evidence class — a site, not a finding, so a grid marks overlapping
producers once instead of adding them up. It ignores rule id, producer and
severity. The record fingerprint keeps its other job. validate-report
recomputes the key rather than checking its shape.
SPECULATIVE IS DEMOTED NUMERICALLY TOO
Aggregate weight 0 at every severity, counts.actionable excludes it, the human
summary separates the two, and a document whose actionable + demoted counts do
not account for the total is rejected. Appendix E's SARIF rank of 20 is kept
and published as a different number: a guess stays visible and adds nothing.
THE ESTATE'S CREUSOT LANE
.github/workflows/creusot-gate.yml calls cicd-suite's Creusot gate at the same
pin the estate audit uses, rather than only inheriting it from the audit's
languages component. Measured with the gate's own detect and theatre phases on
this tree: obligations=false claims=false contract_count=0 trusted_count=0, and
its verdict is its own words — nothing was proved and nothing claims to be.
What the lane buys is the negative: a "verified with Creusot" claim with no
contracts behind it is now a build failure (T1), a creusot-std dependency that
annotates nothing is a failure here because enforce_hollow is set (T2), and
every #[trusted] axiom must be listed (T3). PROOF-PROGRESS.adoc records the
state and what a first real obligation requires.
VERIFIED ON THE TOOLCHAIN
cargo fmt --check clean, clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings clean,
cargo test --workspace 248 cases pass, cargo build --release, tests/e2e.sh,
tests/doc_drift.sh, tests/format_ratchet.sh (108/108 JSON files accounted, 0
invalid) and tests/proven/check_test_provenance.sh all pass. The JSON ratchet's
closed inventory gained the three new contract files and the frozen 0.4.0
golden; the YAML inventory gained the new workflow.

Report contract for consumers: freeze 0.4.0, publish verdict matrix + corroboration keys
Report contract for consumers: 0.4.0 frozen, verdict matrix as data, corroboration keys — and the estate's Creusot lane

The task will inspect the CI failures, validate its fix, and commit the fix to this branch automatically.
Note: Fixing CI failures is a beta feature and may encounter errors. Expect some limitations and changes as we gather feedback and continue to improve it.
The key hashes the root-relative path, but relative_path falls back to the
path unchanged when a file sits outside the scan root, so a report could mint a
key encoding the build machine that no consumer could derive. validate-report
now rejects a finding whose path cannot be made relative, and a CLI test proves
it is refused by THAT check rather than incidentally by another. Adds a test
keeping FROZEN_SCHEMA_VERSIONS and the version dispatch in step, and states in
the published matrix rules that counts.* count findings while corroboration
collapses sites across producers.

Route the demotion test through verdict::counts_toward_verdict.
The verdict summary counts demoted findings with a local evidence() == EvidenceClass::Speculative test. The published matrix derives count_bucket and demotion_suffix from verdict::counts_toward_verdict. Both tests agree today. If counts_toward_verdict changes, the matrix and this summary disagree. the_published_matrix_matches_the_code cannot detect that, because it compares only the matrix with verdict.rs.
The same local test appears in these places:
render_one in this file (the suffix)
message_text in report/sarif.rs
Counts::tally in report/json.rs, through by_evidence.speculative

The digest concern is refuted. All four blake3 entries in schemas/index.json match the committed bytes of their files. The check ran in the checked-out repository, and the rewritten comment would not be actionable.
Handle aliased Creusot dependencies before enabling obligations.
The pinned script detects only literal creusot-std and creusot-contracts dependency keys. A crate with creusot = { package = "creusot-std", ... } and contract attributes can set obligations=true while leaving the selected crate list empty. The planted controls can pass, after which the proof loop has no repository crate to prove and the gate can exit successfully.
This repository currently has no Creusot dependency or contract attribute, so this is a future gap rather than a current proof bypass. Pin a version that resolves dependency aliases and rejects an empty selected-crate list when obligations exist.

The published matrix is only a single source of truth if the reporters read it
too: human.rs and sarif.rs now take the suffix from verdict::demotion_suffix and
the summary predicate from verdict::counts_toward_verdict, and Counts::tally
counts the demoted bucket with the same predicate (debug-asserted against the
SPECULATIVE figure). Also: EVIDENCE-CONTRACT no longer splits a paragraph into
an indented literal block, PROOF-PROGRESS no longer claims the estate audit ran
the Creusot gate, and the workflow records the pinned gate's dependency-alias
gap as an upstream fix rather than a pass.

Reject parent traversal anywhere in corroboration paths
When the scan root is /repo and a finding names /repo/sub/../../outside.php, relative_path returns sub/../../outside.php; this passes both the absolute-path and starts_with("../") checks even though it resolves outside the root. A report can therefore satisfy validation with an out-of-root finding and a fingerprint minted for that path, contradicting the new inside-root contract; inspect all path components or lexically normalize the path before accepting it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Normalize wire paths independently of the validator host
When a report produced on Windows is validated on Unix, a root such as C:\repo and file C:\repo\app.php are interpreted with Unix Path semantics, so relative_path fails to strip the root and recomputes the key from C:/repo/app.php instead of the producer's app.php. This rejects an otherwise valid exchange report with semantic fingerprint mismatch; recomputation should use the already root-relative record path or a platform-independent wire-path parser rather than the validator host's std::path::Path rules.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve 0.5.0 semantic checks after the next schema bump
When a later envelope version becomes current and 0.5.0 is moved into FROZEN_SCHEMA_VERSIONS as prescribed by the new freeze policy, this comparison becomes false for every 0.5.0 report. The frozen schema will still require the three fields structurally, but validation will stop recomputing semantic_fingerprint and checking the actionable/demoted totals, so forged 0.5.0 values that are currently rejected will become accepted; gate these checks on the versions that contain the fields rather than whichever version happens to be current.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Remove or register the temporary diagnostic workflow
The Format ratchet step in .github/workflows/format-policy.yml runs tests/format_ratchet.sh, whose closed YAML inventory rejects every tracked .yml/.yaml/.kyaml path absent from ci/yaml-ratchet.kyaml. This commit adds diag.yml but registers only creusot-gate.yml, so the required format workflow fails on this file; delete this explicitly temporary, repository-writing diagnostic lane as its header requests, or account for it in the ratchet if it is intentionally retained.
Review response — every actionable point addressed
All checks are green (check, Provenance and coverage, I-JSON/JCS and KYAML
ratchets, creusot / Detect, creusot / theatre, creusot / verdict, estate/*, scan/*, CodeQL, semgrep). Point-by-point:
Codex P1 — schema validation test loads the 0.4.0 schema
Fixed in c73d017: the test now asks validator_for_version() for the schema the
rendered document's own schema_version selects, so it cannot point at the wrong
generation. Added every_frozen_version_has_its_own_schema, which fails if FROZEN_SCHEMA_VERSIONS ever lists a version the dispatch does not handle.
Codex P1 — register the new JSON files in the format ratchet
Fixed in a62255c: all four files are in the closed inventory
(schemas/index.json, schemas/scan-0.5.0.json, schemas/verdict-matrix-1.0.0.json, crates/pons-core/tests/golden/report-0.4.0.json).
The ratchet now reports 108/108 accounted, 0 invalid. The new workflow is in the
YAML inventory too.
Codex P2 — label the new schema 0.5.0
Fixed in f37d78e; schemas/scan-0.5.0.json now carries title: Pons scan envelope 0.5.0.
Codex P2 — reject absolute findings outside the scan root
Fixed in f2957a4 + tests: validate-report refuses a finding whose path cannot be
made root-relative (absolute outside the root, or climbing out with ..), because
the key minted from it would encode the build machine. a_finding_outside_the_scan_root_is_rejected
moves the inventory entry along with the finding so the rejection is proven to come
from that check rather than incidentally from another.
Codex P2 — deduplicate actionable sites
Deliberately not changed, and now stated where consumers read it: counts.* count findings, while corroboration collapses sites across producers. Two Pons
rules on one line are two findings sharing one key; a Pons finding and a foreign
finding at the same site are one corroborated site. Publishing a site count would
mean a schema change (a version bump) and would make counts.by_evidence stop
summing to the total. The distinction is in aggregation.rules and in docs/EVIDENCE-CONTRACT.adoc.
CodeRabbit — route the demotion test through verdict::counts_toward_verdict
Fixed in 0eb5651: human.rs takes the summary predicate from counts_toward_verdict and the suffix from demotion_suffix; sarif.rs takes the
message suffix from demotion_suffix; Counts::tally counts the demoted bucket with
the same predicate and debug-asserts it against the SPECULATIVE figure. The
reporter now reads the published policy instead of re-stating it.
CodeRabbit — match the frozen version explicitly
Fixed in c73d017 (match version { "0.4.0" => ..., _ => None }), plus the test above.
CodeRabbit — correct the test name in the doc comment
Fixed in 0eb5651: it cites a_report_pinned_at_the_frozen_0_4_0_version_still_validates.
CodeRabbit — split paragraph in EVIDENCE-CONTRACT
Fixed in 0eb5651: the orphaned Pons-native T0 records… fragment is back inside the
paragraph it belongs to, so nothing renders as an indented literal block.
CodeRabbit — estate audit history in PROOF-PROGRESS
Fixed in 0eb5651: corrected. The pinned audit's languages job runs Idris2, Zig,
proof-runner and BoJ — not Creusot — so this repository had no Creusot coverage
before this lane. The claim is corrected in both PROOF-PROGRESS and the workflow header.
CodeRabbit — aliased Creusot dependencies (gate gap)
Agreed, and recorded as a known limit in the workflow header rather than patched
locally: fixing it means either copying the gate (which this repository refuses to do)
or a cicd-suite release that resolves package = aliases and rejects an empty
selected-crate list. It is a future gap, not a current bypass — this tree has no
Creusot dependency and no contract attributes.

What this delivers
