docs: make quickstarts and install instructions match the repo (drop template placeholders and phantom recipes) - #219
just setup, just setup-dev, just e2e, just check-error-codes, just panic-scan, just llm-context, just build-release, just stapeln-*, just uninstall — none of these recipes exist (just --list is the real set); there is also no error-code catalogue anywhere in the tree;
just install --prefix=/usr/local — the recipe takes no arguments;
"Container (via Stapeln)" / podman build presented as working, though Containerfile is a template with commented-out TODO build steps and unreplaced metadata;
nix develop though there is no flake.nix;
the expected first-run output "Verisimiser started successfully." — the CLI's start subcommand is a placeholder and prints nothing of the kind.
Fix
Rewritten from a clone of the repo, not from the template:
Setup — rustup --profile minimal (that part of the instruction was right) plus rustup component add clippy rustfmt, since --profile minimal ships neither and just quality needs both. MSRV 1.85 / edition 2024; rusqlite bundles SQLite, so a C compiler is required and there is no libsqlite3 runtime dep; just is optional (cargo fetch instead of just setup).
Install — cargo install --path . → ~/.cargo/bin/verisimiser; cargo build --release → target/release/verisimiser; cargo install --path . --root <prefix> for a custom prefix. Notes that no release/tag exists yet, so source build is the only route.
Test — just test, the CI-parity form cargo test --all-targets --no-fail-fast, and the real suite layout (5 files / 23 integration tests / 146 unit #[test]s, CLI tests via CARGO_BIN_EXE_verisimiser). Explicitly says there is no separate e2e command.
Maintainer — packaging via cargo install --root, the fact that exactly one file gets installed, no global/XDG config (the manifest path is the config), multi-instance pattern, gc/status --json for operations, and a "what is not packaging-ready" section.
Honest status — Containerfile/devcontainer are template stubs, no flake.nix, guix.scm is a dev shell pinned to 0.1.0 while Cargo.toml is 0.2.0, Tier 2 is stubs, PostgreSQL runtime reads refuse.
Guard against recurrence
scripts/check-doc-recipes.sh + just doc-recipes: scans .adoc code blocks for just <name> and fails on any recipe not defined in Justfile/*.just. Sync-managed template artifacts that describe the template's own recipes are reported and skipped rather than rewritten.
CONTRIBUTING-DEV.adoc gains "Commands in docs must exist", with a non-recipe → real-alternative table and the rule from ADR-0002: fix the docs, don't invent a recipe.
Also
README.adoc build section: Containerfile no longer described as producing a working image, and "pre-built release binaries are published" softened to "workflow exists; no release published yet".
TEST-NEEDS.adoc: dropped the /var/mnt/eclipse/repos/verisimiser path, refreshed counts, noted proptest is declared but unused and tests/fuzz/ is a placeholder.
llm-warmup-{dev,user}.adoc and the setup.sh header no longer point at just setup.
Verification
just doc-recipes → passes; confirmed it fails on a probe file containing just e2e / just check-error-codes.
All edited .adoc render with Asciidoctor with zero warnings (Node asciidoctor@3); every table is well-formed.
Deliberately not touched: the sync-managed template files (docs/RSR_OUTLINE.adoc, container/*, .machine_readable/**) whose stale recipe references belong upstream in hyperpolymath/standards.
The three quickstarts and docs/QUICKSTART.adoc were unfilled RSR templates:
literal {{LANG_STACK}}/{{BUILD_CMD}} placeholders, `just setup`,
`just e2e`, `just check-error-codes`, `just panic-scan`, `just llm-context`,
`just stapeln-*` and `just uninstall` recipes that this repo does not
define, and Nix/Guix/container paths described as if they worked.
Rewritten against the repository as it is:
* rustup --profile minimal + `rustup component add clippy rustfmt`;
MSRV 1.85, edition 2024, bundled SQLite needs a C compiler
* real install paths: `cargo install --path .` (-> ~/.cargo/bin),
`cargo build --release` (-> target/release), `cargo install --root`
for a prefix (`just install` takes no arguments)
* test story: `just test`, CI parity mirror
`cargo test --all-targets --no-fail-fast`, and the actual suite layout
(5 integration files / 23 tests / 146 unit #[test]s)
* explicit "not ready" list: Containerfile is a template stub, no
flake.nix, guix.scm is a dev shell pinned below Cargo.toml,
.devcontainer has unreplaced tokens, Tier 2 is stubs, postgres runtime
reads refuse, and no release/tag exists yet despite the workflow
Guard so this cannot silently drift again:
* scripts/check-doc-recipes.sh + `just doc-recipes` fail when an .adoc
code block references a recipe the Justfile (or an imported *.just)
does not define; template artifacts are reported and skipped
* CONTRIBUTING-DEV gains "Commands in docs must exist" with the
non-recipe -> real-alternative table (fix docs, don't invent recipes)
Also: README build section corrected (Containerfile/release claims),
TEST-NEEDS de-hardcoded from /var/mnt/eclipse/... and refreshed,
llm-warmup-{dev,user} and the setup.sh header no longer point at
`just setup`.
Verified: all touched .adoc render with Asciidoctor with zero warnings;
check-doc-recipes passes and fails correctly on a probe file.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Reworked the user, developer and maintainer guides with repository-specific build, installation, testing, configuration and operating instructions.
Updated project and test documentation to reflect current workflows, test coverage and support status.
Clarified which installation and packaging options are available, and documented current limitations, including the lack of published releases.
Chores
Added a check for undefined just recipes referenced in documentation.
This pull request rewrites user, developer, and maintainer documentation to reflect current repository workflows and limitations. It also adds a script and just doc-recipes target to check documented Just recipe references in AsciiDoc code blocks.
Changes: Repository guides and command documentation
A script checks recipe references in fenced AsciiDoc blocks against declared recipes. A Just target runs the check. Contributor guidance lists non-recipes and describes the check’s scope.
Developer setup and test instructions QUICKSTART-DEV.adoc, TEST-NEEDS.adoc, llm-warmup-dev.adoc, setup.sh, CHANGELOG.adoc
The guides describe setup, build, quality, and test commands, alongside test coverage and current counts. The setup script header documents its fallback behaviour.
Developer project and recipe reference QUICKSTART-DEV.adoc, CHANGELOG.adoc
The developer guide describes the project layout, available recipes, implementation limits, development constraints, and support references.
User installation and command guidance QUICKSTART-USER.adoc, docs/QUICKSTART.adoc, llm-warmup-user.adoc
The user guides describe CLI installation, manifest workflows, configuration, diagnostics, available commands, and current limitations.
Maintainer build and operating guidance QUICKSTART-MAINTAINER.adoc, README.adoc
The maintainer guide and README describe the source-build path, packaging and release status, deployment checks, sidecar limits, and multi-instance commands.
hyperpolymath/verisimiser#217: Defines the Octad vocabulary and Tier 2 status referenced in this pull request’s guides.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 39de5
The changes are mergeable with owner awareness, but contributors may encounter a failed setup or first-run command, and some guidance should be corrected. The recipe check can also misclassify future documented recipes.

Review comments at @docs/QUICKSTART.adoc:
- Around line 29-30: Update the system-library statement in the quickstart to
say that no additional system libraries are required beyond libc, consistent
with QUICKSTART-USER.adoc; alternatively, document the target-specific libc
requirement.
- Line 39: Update the quickstart directory step so it works for a fresh
checkout: tell readers to replace the placeholder with their application
directory, or create and use a known directory before running `init`.
Review comments at @llm-warmup-dev.adoc:
- Around line 7-9: Update the Octad description in the warmup text to name all
eight concerns, adding Data and Metadata alongside the six already listed. Keep
the distinction from VeriSimDB’s upstream eight-modality model.
Review comments at @QUICKSTART-DEV.adoc:
- Around line 246-247: Update the contributor-guide reference in the checklist
description to point to the root-level CONTRIBUTING-DEV.adoc, so contributors
can locate the per-area checklists.
- Line 71: Update the setup command in the quickstart so `cargo fetch` is
presented on its own rather than `just deps` as an equivalent cache-warming
command; if mentioning `just deps` for contributors who need Zig, state that
they must configure a writable `ZIG_PREFIX`.
- Around line 9-10: Update the TIP in QUICKSTART-DEV.adoc to state that just
doc-recipes checks just <recipe> references in ---- and .... blocks and skips a
template document; do not claim it checks every command in the file.
Review comments at @QUICKSTART-MAINTAINER.adoc:
- Around line 20-21: Update the target-database guidance to describe SQLite
separately as an embedded, file-based database, and document the path or URI
form accepted by the [database] configuration. Keep the protocol and
connection-string guidance specific to PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
Review comments at @QUICKSTART-USER.adoc:
- Around line 9-11: Update the Octad description to either name all eight
concerns or clarify that the listed concerns are examples; keep the wording
consistent with the number of concerns actually listed.
- Line 142: Replace the angle-bracket placeholder in the per-subcommand help
example with the shell-safe command verisimiser status --help, and state that
users can replace status with another subcommand.
Review comments at @README.adoc:
- Around line 508-509: Update the documented Cargo build and install output
paths to distinguish Unix binaries from Windows MSVC `.exe` artefacts, or use a
platform-neutral placeholder; apply the same correction to the corresponding
maintainer quickstart commands.
Review comments at @scripts/check-doc-recipes.sh:
- Around line 56-62: Replace the `recipe_names`-based inventory in the recipe
collection block with callable recipe names reported by Just for the active
Justfile. Do not scan every top-level `.just` file; ensure Just’s own listing
includes valid `@name:` declarations and excludes recipes from unimported files.

Align the system-library requirement with the other quickstart.
This guide says there are no system library dependencies, while QUICKSTART-USER.adoc states that the binary depends on libc. Say that no additional system libraries are required beyond libc, or document the target-specific requirement.

Update the system-library statement in the quickstart to say that no additional
system libraries are required beyond libc, consistent with QUICKSTART-USER.adoc;
alternatively, document the target-specific libc requirement.

Make the application directory step actionable.
cd ~/projects/my-app is presented as a literal command, but the guide does not create the directory or tell the reader to replace it. The sequence fails for a fresh checkout. Add an explicit replacement instruction or create and use a known directory before running init.

Name all eight Octad concerns.
This sentence calls the model an eight-concern Octad but lists only six concerns. Add Data and Metadata, the two inherent concerns in OctadDimension, so this warmup does not teach an incomplete model. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Describe the recipe check’s actual scope.
just doc-recipes checks just <recipe> references in ---- and .... blocks. It does not check every command in this file, and it skips a template document. State that narrower scope so contributors do not treat unchecked commands as validated.

Do not present just deps as an equivalent cache-warming command for unprivileged users.
When the Zig download succeeds, scripts/install-zig.sh tries to create directories under /usr/local. Without write permission, that step stops just deps before it reaches cargo fetch. Keep cargo fetch as the setup command, or document a writable ZIG_PREFIX for contributors who also need Zig. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the setup command in the quickstart so `cargo fetch` is presented on its
own rather than `just deps` as an equivalent cache-warming command; if
mentioning `just deps` for contributors who need Zig, state that they must
configure a writable `ZIG_PREFIX`.

Describe SQLite separately from protocol-backed targets.
SQLite is an embedded, file-based database. It does not use a client/server protocol like PostgreSQL or MongoDB. This sentence gives incorrect connection guidance. Split the sentence and document the SQLite path or URI form accepted by [database].

Clarify the eight-concern Octad list.
The text calls this an eight-concern Octad but names only five concerns. List all eight concerns, or change the wording to state that these are examples.

Use a shell-safe help example.
The angle-bracket placeholder is parsed as input redirection in Bash. A copied command can therefore fail before verisimiser runs. Use a concrete example such as verisimiser status --help, and state that users can replace status with another subcommand.
