Say in the contract who refuses a value, the CLI or the API - #27
Write down in docs/contract/output.md who refuses a bad value, the CLI or the API.
Replaces #26, which was branched off search-post and so carried the whole of #25 once that merged. Same two bullets, now off main, plus one correction described below.
Contract
The command name and flags derive from its routes by the naming rules of docs/contract/commands.md, and each route is reachable by a distinct set of flags, or the exception is recorded with its reason (or this pull request changes the contract and nothing else)
The three boxes below are about a command, and this pull request adds none. Nothing in the diff touches src/.
Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts
The command never waits for a human: no prompt, no question, no $EDITOR; a delete command spreads BaseCommand.confirmFlags and its examples carry --yes
The command never speaks HTTP itself: the SDK or the generated client only, no fetch outside src/lib/clients/
Tests
pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally
The three boxes below have nothing to add, and the promise is not untested: #25, now on main, pins both halves of it. test/commands/search.test.ts asserts that --vector 0.1,nope --ranking-score-threshold abc --hybrid '{nope}' reaches the API as {"vector":[0.1,"nope"],"rankingScoreThreshold":"abc","hybrid":"{nope}"}, and that 0x1 and 1e999 are sent as text while .5 and -1e-3 convert. test/integration/meilisearch/search.test.ts asserts that a real Meilisearch answers invalid_search_ranking_score_threshold and exit 1. test/contract/errors.test.ts reads the Errors section only, so the codes named in these bullets are prose, not a second registry.
--help snapshot added or updated on purpose
JSON output snapshot for one success case per route and one error case
Integration test added (Meilisearch API commands only)
Simplicity
Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16)
Anything shared lives in src/lib/, is used by this command, and is named below
Nothing added.
Docs
docs/contract/ updated for every name, flag, variable or code this change adds or renames, or nothing to update
The ADRs that touch this change were read; what they decide still holds, or a new ADR says what changed
No accepted ADR was edited. A new ADR was added if a decision changed.
ADR 0002 read: "the CLI returns the API response without a wrapper" and "the CLI never rewrites an API message" are the same stance one step earlier, on the way in rather than on the way out. No new ADR: this records a rule the contract already implied, it does not change a decision.
Housekeeping
Changeset added, or the change is invisible to users of the package (docs of this repository, tests, CI)
New dependency justified below, or none added
No changeset: docs/contract/ is not shipped in the package. The manifest box is left unticked below because nothing in src/commands/ moved, so there was nothing to regenerate.
oclif.manifest.json regenerated
Notes for the reviewer
The rule, in one line: the CLI refuses an input only when it can say what is wrong without the API.
Input
Who refuses it
Code
--file, --data that is not JSON
the CLI: a body has to be parsed before the flags can be merged into it
cli_input_invalid, exit 2
a flag --help types: an integer, a closed list of values
the CLI: --help already says what is expected
cli_usage, exit 2
everything else
the API, with its own code and its own message
the API's, exit 1
One correction over #26, worth reading. The first draft said every value but a body travels as it is. That is false, and was false before search existed: --limit and --offset are Flags.integer in BaseCommand, so meili get indexes --limit abc has always answered cli_usage and exit 2 before any call. The bullets now draw the line where it actually runs, between what the parser types and what a command converts itself. Checked against every Flags.integer and Flags.option in src/.
An inconsistency this documents rather than fixes, and that is worth its own discussion.--limit is a typed integer, --ranking-score-threshold is a string the command converts, for one reason only: oclif has Flags.integer and no fractional equivalent. Two mechanisms, two error shapes, from an accident of the toolkit. The contract now describes both honestly, which is the most a docs change should do; making them one is a separate change, and it would have to pick which one wins.
Nothing cross-references this from rule 7 of commands.md, where a reader learns that an object travels as JSON text. One home per rule seemed better than two that can drift. Say if you want the pointer.
The rule was decided while writing `meili search` and lived only in a
comment. Two bullets in the Input section of output.md:
The CLI refuses an input when it can say what is wrong without the API.
A body has to be parsed before the flags can be merged into it, so
`--file` and `--data` fail with `cli_input_invalid`. A flag `--help`
types, an integer or a closed list, is refused by the parser with
`cli_usage`, as `meili get indexes --limit abc` already is.
Everything else travels as it is. What the command converts itself, a
fractional number or an object, becomes that value when its text spells
it and is sent as that text when it does not, so the API answers with
its own code and names the value. Converting more would change the
value in silence: `Number` reads `0x1` as 1 and writes an overflow as
`null`, which an API that reads null as "no value" answers 0 and the
wrong data for.
No code: #25 implements it and its tests pin it.

The output contract now documents which input errors the CLI rejects before an API call, which values it passes through, and how API validation errors are reported.
Changes: Input contract
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Input validation rules docs/contract/output.md
The contract describes local rejection for malformed --file or --data JSON and help-constrained flags. It documents limited conversions, pass-through of other values, and API validation error handling.
meilisearch/cli#24: Adds JSON body parsing and local cli_input_invalid errors, which the contract documents.
meilisearch/cli#25: Implements search input handling covered by the documented validation and conversion rules.
meilisearch/cli#21: Adds shared JSON body handling for --file and --data, which the contract describes.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 42abd
The documentation should accurately describe CLI rejection of non-object JSON bodies; runtime behavior is otherwise unaffected.

- The CLI refuses an input only when it can say what is wrong without the API. A body has to be parsed before the flags can be merged into it, so `--file` and `--data` fail as above with `cli_input_invalid`. A flag that `--help` types, an integer or one of a closed list of values, is refused with `cli_usage` and exit 2 before any call.
- Every other value travels as it is, and the API refuses it with its own code and its own message. The command converts what the route types as a fractional number or as an object, `--ranking-score-threshold`, `--vector`, `--hybrid`: text that spells the value becomes it, text that does not is sent as that text, so `meili search --ranking-score-threshold abc` answers `invalid_search_ranking_score_threshold` and exits 1. The CLI never re-checks what the API checks, and never invents a message or a code for it. Converting more than that would change the value in silence: `Number` reads `0x1` as 1 and writes an overflow as `null`, which an API that reads a null as "no value" answers 0 and the wrong data for.

Document non-object JSON body rejection.
readJsonObjectBody rejects valid JSON values such as null and arrays with cli_input_invalid before the API call. The current text documents only JSON parsing and then says every other value reaches the API. State that object-body routes also reject parsed non-object bodies locally, or qualify that sentence.
