# Scenarios: Pre-Packaged Red-Teaming Playbooks

A new model release ships. Or a new jailbreak technique starts circulating in the security community. Or your team is onboarding an AI system from another org. The first question is always the same: *where are we exposed?*

PyRIT has been designed from the start to be configurable — a kit of Lego bricks that snap together, so red teamers can compose exactly the test they need. That flexibility is still the foundation, and it isn't going anywhere. What we've noticed, though, is that across teams a lot of those compositions end up looking remarkably similar: the same targets, the same handful of attack strategies, the same harm categories — assembled in a notebook, run against a new model, and then assembled all over again next quarter against the next one. Different team, different notebook, same assembly. And because the run lives in whatever notebook you happened to have open, there's nothing clean to hand to a teammate, rerun on the next release, or diff against last month's results. On top of that, every time PyRIT itself ships a new version, those notebooks need a once-over before they'll run again. What if a serious red-team scan was a single command — repeatable, shareable, and resilient to PyRIT's own upgrades?

## Enter scenarios

A **scenario** is the answer to that question: a pre-packaged red-teaming playbook that takes the loop of attacks experienced red teamers were already running by hand and turns it into a single repeatable command. Pick one, point it at a target, and you get back a `ScenarioResult` you can save, share, and diff.

The pre-built scenarios are grouped by what you want to test for. Want to know if your model resists jailbreak prompts? `Jailbreak`. Whether it leaks PII or training data? `Leakage`. How it handles malware-generation requests? `Cyber`. Need a wide read across all the common harm categories? `RapidResponse`. Each one bundles the right techniques, objectives, and scoring rubric for its theme, so a question like "is my model resistant to phishing?" turns into one command instead of a longer script.

Because the configuration lives in code, runs are repeatable. The same scenario runs the same way against your model today, against the next model release in three months, or against the one your teammate is evaluating across the hall — and when PyRIT itself upgrades underneath, the scenario keeps working. Every result lands in memory tagged with a scenario-run ID, so months later you can come back to resume, diff, or aggregate across runs. And when a pre-built scenario doesn't match what you're testing for, the framework still gives you the building blocks to build your own.

The defaults work out of the box. Pick a scenario, point it at a target, and the scan runs — there's no dozen-knob config to dial in just to get a meaningful first read. That ease isn't just about saving keystrokes, though. Scenarios bake in *expertise* — which attack techniques work against safety guardrails versus malware-generation refusals versus PII extraction, what scoring rubric makes sense for each, what counts as a successful attack. You don't need months of red-teaming experience to get a meaningful read on your model; the methodology comes with the scenario. And because everyone runs the same scenario the same way, results compare cleanly across teams, models, and releases — your `Jailbreak` numbers and a teammate's mean the same thing.

### What's in a scenario

Open one up and you'll find the same four things working together: a **dataset of objectives** (the bad things you want the model to do — generate malware, leak training data, write a phishing email), a set of **attack techniques** for getting the model to actually do them (send the prompt directly, wrap it in a role-play, escalate over multiple turns with Crescendo), a **scorer** that judges each response — typically an LLM as judge — and a **printer** that produces the human-readable summary at the end. Most also run a **baseline pass**: the raw objectives sent straight through without any attack, so the report can show what the model does on its own next to what it does once attacked.

## Running your first scan

Let's say you want a wide read on a new target. The broadest scenario in the catalog is `RapidResponse` — a comprehensive sweep across the most common attack techniques and the full AIRT harm-category catalog. From the scanner CLI:

That one command does a lot. Behind the scenes, initializers populate the registries (techniques, targets, datasets); the CLI resolves `airt.rapid_response` and `my_target`, instantiates `RapidResponse`, and runs it. Out of the box (using the default configuration for strategies ie `--strategies default`) it sends `role_play` and `many_shot` attacks plus a baseline pass — across seven AIRT harm categories: hate, fairness, violence, sexual, harassment, misinformation, leakage. Switch to `--strategies single_turn` to swap in the single-turn pool — `role_play`, `context_compliance`, `crescendo_simulated`, plus the persona-driven crescendo variants (`crescendo_movie_director`, `crescendo_history_lecture`, `crescendo_journalist_interview`). `--strategies multi_turn` picks up the multi-turn pool instead: `many_shot`, `tap`, `pair`, and `red_teaming`.

When it finishes you get a `ScenarioResult` persisted to memory, a pretty-printed summary at the end, and — because every `AttackResult` is stamped with a scenario-run ID — the ability to resume the same run later, diff against last quarter's, or ask memory "how did this target do on `RapidResponse` across our last ten scans?"

The same scenario class you run via the CLI is what you'd `await` in a notebook if you preferred to drive it from Python:

`RapidResponse` is a natural jumping-off point. You run it to map *where* your target struggles — and then you pivot to a focused scenario to dig into *why*.

## When brute force gets expensive

`RapidResponse` is thorough, but it's brute force. It runs every selected technique against every objective. On a wide scan against a real target, that gets expensive fast — most of the misses aren't free. You're paying for them in latency, API rate-limit budget, and adversarial-chat tokens.

It also throws away information. If TAP worked 60% of the time and `prompt_sending` never got through, the next run should know that. `RapidResponse` doesn't.

This is what **`TextAdaptive`** is for. Instead of running every technique against every objective, this scenario picks which technique to try next *per-objective* based on the historical **attack success rate (ASR)** the framework records in memory, learns from what's working, and stops as soon as one succeeds. Budget goes from `O(techniques × objectives)` down to `O(max_attempts × objectives)` — with `max_attempts` defaulting to 3.

The brain is a pluggable selector. The default is `EpsilonGreedyTechniqueSelector`, which uses an explore/exploit tradeoff: most of the time it picks the technique with the best historical ASR, sometimes it tries something random to make sure it isn't missing a better option. New techniques get a fair shot before the selector settles on favorites.

The genuinely powerful part is that **it learns across runs**. The selector is stateless — it doesn't hold counts in itself, it queries memory every time it's asked to pick. If you ran `RapidResponse` last week and TAP worked 60% of the time on this target, `TextAdaptive` knows that on day one. Every scan your org runs sharpens the next.

In practice, `RapidResponse` and `TextAdaptive` complement each other: run `RapidResponse` first to map which harm categories the target struggles with, then reach for `TextAdaptive` to find the fastest path through whatever came back interesting.

## What else is in the catalog

`RapidResponse` and `TextAdaptive` are two of several scenarios you can run today. The rest of the catalog:

- **`RedTeamAgent`** — the integration with [Azure AI Foundry's Red Teaming Agent](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/foundry/concepts/ai-red-teaming-agent). Organized by complexity (easy / moderate / difficult) rather than harm type, defaults to the HarmBench dataset, and ships 25 techniques (20 easy converters like Base64 / ROT13 / Leetspeak, one moderate, and four difficult attacks: `crescendo`, `pair`, `tap`, `multi_turn`).
- **`Encoding`** — inspired by the [Garak](https://github.com/leondz/garak) project. Very focused: can the model be tricked into decoding and repeating harmful content? Tests 17 encoding schemes (Base64, Braille, Morse, Leet Speak, …) against slur terms and XSS payloads.
- **`AdversarialBenchmark`** *(new in 0.14.0)* — not about testing a target; about comparing adversarial *models*. Feed it multiple red-teaming models and it measures which is most effective at generating attacks.
- **AIRT scenarios** — the rest of the AI Red Team family beyond `RapidResponse`: `Jailbreak` (jailbreak templates), `Cyber` (malware generation), `Leakage` (PII / training-data / IP leaks), `Psychosocial` (mental-health crisis, fake-therapist scenarios), and `Scam` (phishing and fraud generation). Each is focused on one domain so you can drill into the categories `RapidResponse` flagged.

And you can write your own — the abstractions are designed to be subclassed.

## Under the hood

A few abstractions make all of this composable, and they're the same ones you'll touch if you want to add a technique or write your own scenario:

- **`AttackTechnique`** wraps an executable attack (`CrescendoAttack`, `TAPAttack`, `PromptSendingAttack`, …) with its seed configuration — jailbreak template, converter, adversarial chat. A scenario composes a *list* of these rather than reaching for any particular attack class.
- **`AttackTechniqueRegistry`** is the catalog. Techniques register themselves with tags (`default`, `single_turn`, `multi_turn`, …), and scenarios pull them out by tag query rather than by import. Add a new factory with the right tag and every scenario that asks for that tag picks it up for free — not every scenario exposes the same set of aggregates, so what shows up under `--strategies` is whatever the scenario explicitly registered.
- **`ScenarioStrategy`** is a per-scenario enum built dynamically from the registry at import time — that's why the names you see on `--strategies` always reflect what's currently tagged.
- **`AtomicAttack`** is the runnable pairing of one technique with one dataset. It's what the executor actually executes and the unit that gets tracked, resumed, and labeled in memory.
- **`ScenarioResult`** wraps the run with a scenario-run ID, which is what makes the cross-run analytics and `TextAdaptive`'s learning trustworthy. `SelectorScope` is the escape hatch if you want to narrow what the selector "remembers" — by default it learns from all historical runs; flip it to `current_run` and it only counts evidence from the run in flight.

A few things on the roadmap worth flagging:

- **Scenarios in the GUI.** Today scenarios run from the framework or the scanner. We're working on bringing scenario configuration and result browsing into the PyRIT GUI so non-CLI users can run scans, inspect results, and compare runs visually.
- **More adaptive modalities.** `TextAdaptive` is the only concrete adaptive scenario today. `AdaptiveScenario` is the modality-agnostic base — `ImageAdaptive` and `AudioAdaptive` are on the roadmap once their attack-technique catalogs are deep enough to give the selector something meaningful to choose between.
- **Bring-your-own selectors and techniques.** `TechniqueSelector` is a small protocol with one method — building a contextual bandit, a Thompson sampler, or whatever else you want is a hundred-or-so lines. New techniques register into `AttackTechniqueRegistry` the same way the built-in ones do.
