rest: a hook onError abort answers the data door with a 400 that carries no error code, and the server logs it as an unhandled SandboxError #27508
Filing gate: ① a product defect with a reproduction, found by an off-clause probe of QA run #27438 (wave 3 of the 18.3.0 sweep, anchor #27377). reach: measured at the public data door, whose 400 body carries no code.
Business reason: when a declared hook aborts a write (onError: 'abort'), the client gets {error, object} with no code, unlike every other refusal on the same door. Clients that branch on code (the console's toasts, SDK error mapping, AI agents) cannot tell an intended abort from an unexpected failure. The server log also records the abort as an unhandled error.
Reader who acts: the triage seat, then the implementer for the REST data door's error mapping (packages/rest, mapDataError) and the sandbox hook error type.
Dedupe (open AND closed): the query "hook abort error response missing code Unhandled error SandboxError 400" returned 5 hits, all closed and none the same. These are the family of #11588, #11683, #23718, #23723 and #4431, which are other sandbox-error envelope gaps at other doors.
In a writable package, author an object OBJ with a sandboxed beforeInsert hook that throws boom abort when name == 'throwabort', declared with onError: 'abort'. Publish it.
POST /api/v1/data/OBJ {"name":"throwabort"} → 400{"error":"boom abort","object":"OBJ"}. The body has no code.
The server log prints [REST] Unhandled error: SandboxError.
For comparison, a validation refusal on the same door answers {code: "VALIDATION_FAILED", …}.
Expected: a hook abort answers a ledgered code (for example a hook-aborted code from the ADR-0112 catalog) in the same envelope as the door's other refusals, and is logged as a handled refusal.
QA-source: #27438 · studio-authoring.hooks-tab-authoring · observed beside the clauses
Read fresh. A hook onError abort answers the data door with a 400 that has no error code, unlike its sibling refusals, and the server logs it as an unhandled SandboxError. Clients cannot branch on it: p2.
Map the abort through the existing mapDataError to a ledgered ADR-0112 code, in the door's one envelope, and log it as handled.
The second half ("logged as unhandled") is separable: logUnexpectedRouteError logs every throw that is not a declared refusal; a log-only change needs no new code.
Question: does an undeclared hook onError abort get a new ledgered code (route the code half to domain:spec under ruling A), or stay code-less with only the log corrected (S, this lane)? Or split the two halves?
Triage: retriage answer · split the two halves · 2026-10-29T14:03Z
⛔ Not a claim. The R743 grade named a remedy without checking its lane boundary, and that is triage's miss. Answered here:
The log half is here, now (S): an undeclared hook onError abort is a refusal the route answered, so logUnexpectedRouteError stops logging it as unhandled.
The code half is split to domain:spec: under ruling A (6431311681), hook refusals are declared by code. Giving an undeclared abort a ledgered ADR-0112 code mints a public wire code, which is Clause-②: yes and a spec-lane edit. This seat files that card (p2), and it owes a contract review before approval. pm:retriage removed.

PR #27667 (#27597, the code half) gives an undeclared hook abort the wire code HOOK_ABORTED, exported as UNDECLARED_HOOK_REFUSAL_CODE from @objectstack/types. Measured against this card's branch claude/issue-27508-hook-abort-not-unhandled @ e9d789c2, the two PRs share no lines in packages/rest/src/error-response.ts. They do have a semantic coupling: isSandboxBodyRefusal exempts the abort only when resolved.body.code === undefined. Once #27667 lands, the abort carries HOOK_ABORTED, so that condition would log it as [REST] Unhandled error again.
Whichever PR lands second makes that condition read the new code, for example code === undefined || code === UNDECLARED_HOOK_REFUSAL_CODE, with a test that pins the abort as not logged once it carries the code.
