feat(tool): integrate AskUser runtime tool into toolPlugin - #444
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This change adds an ask_user protocol with structured questions and answer validation. The core tool plugin registers and pauses Ask User calls, defers sibling calls, and records outcomes. Vue adds runtime handling for cancellation, answer submission, and call resumption.

Ask User Tool Flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Ask User protocol and validation packages/kit/src/message/tools/askUser.ts, packages/kit/src/message/plugins/index.ts, packages/kit/src/message/test/askUser.test.ts
Defines Ask User question, state, and result types. Validates tool arguments and answers, normalizes skipped answers, and enforces input and answer limits. Tests cover protocol validation, schemas, and answer normalization.
Adds Ask User prompt and lifecycle hooks to the core plugin. The plugin registers and pauses Ask User calls, defers sibling calls, and records terminal outcomes. Vue forwards the configuration options. Tests and documentation cover integration behavior and configuration.
Adds Vue runtime handling for Ask User state changes, cancellation, retry, and answer submission. The runtime validates answers and dispatches deduplicated resume or rejection commands. Vue context exposes createMessage and mutate, and entry points export the runtime and plugin APIs.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8c63b
Unusual tool-round-limit requests may send AskUser content to the provider, and the public documentation misstates sibling-call results. These bounded risks warrant correction or owner acceptance before merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to cb59c
The new interaction retains existing paused-call and identity checks. However, cancellation can leave the interaction marked active or submitted after its underlying call is denied. Application integration and recovery behavior remain only partially established.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · observed: The new Ask User terminal hook updates interaction state only for failed calls. Core cancellation or rejection marks the bound call denied without reconciling the interaction, which can remain active or submitted. A subsequent missing resume is also suppressed for a handled call. This leaves the interaction's externally visible lifecycle inconsistent with its cancelled execution owner. Existing pending-call checks contain execution; this is a cancellation and lifecycle-consistency concern, not a demonstrated authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected resume path is bounded to a call in the current paused turn. The routed test ranges do not establish a network-facing entrypoint. Wider tenant, service, credential or datastore exposure cannot be determined from this local library flow.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — No attacker-to-privileged-execution bypass was established in the inspected submission path. The cancellation divergence does not itself authorize execution: core resolution rejects calls that are no longer awaiting approval. This is a bounded conclusion, not complete security coverage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The state-change helper accepts arbitrary state keys and values. Bubble events originate through an injected callback available to host-selected Vue renderers; the existing wrapper checks event shape but does not reserve execution metadata keys. The inspected evidence does not establish that model-controlled text can emit these events or that renderers are isolated from application authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Core cancellation denies pending calls, but the new integration synchronizes Ask User state only on failure. Maintaining separate interaction and execution states without a shared terminal transition creates lifecycle drift during cancellation and rejection.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If applications intend to accept events from less-trusted renderers, restrict state updates to interaction-owned fields and keep call identity and execution metadata outside that event authority. This is conditional hardening, not an observed exploit.

Run the AskUser request hook in the closing branch.
The toolLoopMode === 'closing' branch returns before askUserIntegration?.onBeforeRequest(context) runs. The AskUser hook is the only place that removes persisted ask_user content from request messages. If the closing request includes an earlier ask_user content item, that item is sent to the provider unchanged. The provider can reject a content part it does not support, and the turn can then fail.
This occurs when maxToolRounds is set, an earlier round used ask_user, and a later batch exceeds the limit.
Call the hook in the closing branch, after the existing request hook and before disableTools(). This keeps tools disabled. It also appends the AskUser system prompt to the closing request, so check that the prompt does not direct the model to call a disabled tool.
